NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 Again, one preparing for a voyage and about to traverse the wild waves cries out to wood more unsound than the boat that bears him.	1 Outro, por sua vez, que quer navegar e se prepara para atravessar as impetuosas ondas, invoca um madeiro de pior qualidade que o navio que o leva;
2 For the urge for profits devised this latter, and Wisdom the artificer produced it.	2 porque o desejo do lucro inventou o navio, e uma hábil sabedoria dirigiu sua construção.
3 But your providence, O Father! guides it, for you have furnished even in the sea a road, and through the waves a steady path,	3 Mas sois vós, Pai, que o governais pela vossa Providência, porque, se abristes caminho, mesmo no mar, e uma rota segura no meio das ondas -
4 Showing that you can save from any danger, so that even one without skill may embark.	4 mostrando por aí que vós podeis tirar do perigo aquele que as afronta mesmo sem meios -,
5 But you will that the products of your Wisdom be not idle; therefore men trust their lives even to frailest wood, and have been safe crossing the surge on a raft.	5 quereis entretanto que não sejam inúteis as obras de vossa sabedoria. Por isso os homens confiam a própria vida a um pouco de madeira e atravessam em segurança as ondas num navio.
6 For of old, when the proud giants were being destroyed, the hope of the universe, who took refuge on a raft, left to the world a future for his race, under the guidance of your hand.	6 Assim, com efeito, quando na origem dos tempos fizestes perecer gigantes orgulhosos, a esperança do universo, refugiando-se num barco, que vossa mão governava, conservou para o mundo o germe de uma geração.
7 For blest is the wood through which justice comes about;	7 Porque é bendito o madeiro pelo qual se opera a justiça,
8 but the handmade idol is accursed, and its maker as well: he for having produced it, and it, because though corruptible, it was termed a god.	8 mas maldito é o ídolo, ele e o que o fez; este porque o formou, aquele porque, sendo corruptível, leva o nome de deus.
9 Equally odious to God are the evildoer and his evil deed;	9 Com efeito, Deus odeia tanto o ímpio quanto sua impiedade,
10 and the thing made shall be punished with its contriver.	10 e a obra sofrerá o mesmo castigo que o autor.
11 Therefore upon even the idols of the nations shall a visitation come, since they have become abominable amid God's works, Snares for the souls of men and a trap for the feet of the senseless.	11 Este é o motivo porque também os ídolos das nações serão julgados, porque, na criação de Deus, eles se tornaram uma abominação, objetos de escândalo para os homens, e laços para os pés dos insensatos.
12 For the source of wantoness is the devising of idols; and their invention was a corruption of life.	12 É pela idealização dos ídolos que começou a apostasia, e sua invenção foi a perda dos humanos.
13 For in the beginning they were not, nor shall they continue forever;	13 Eles não existiam no princípio e não durarão para sempre;
14 for by the vanity of men they came into the world, and therefore a sudden end is devised for them.	14 a vaidade dos homens os introduziu no mundo. E, por causa disso, Deus decidiu a sua destruição para breve.
15 For a father, afflicted with untimely mourning, made an image of the child so quickly taken from him, And now honored as a god what was formerly a dead man and handed down to his subjects mysteries and sacrifices.	15 Um pai aflito por um luto prematuro, tendo mandado fazer a imagem do filho, tão cedo arrebatado, honrou, em seguida, como a um deus aquele que não passava de um morto, e transmitiu, aos seus, certos ritos secretos e cerimônias.
16 Then, in time, the impious practice gained strength and was observed as law, and graven things were worshiped by princely decrees.	16 Este costume ímpio, tendo-se firmado com o tempo, foi depois observado como lei.
17 Men who lived so far away that they could not honor him in his presence copied the appearance of the distant king And made a public image of him they wished to honor, out of zeal to flatter him when absent, as though present.	17 Foi também em conseqüência das ordens dos príncipes que se adoraram imagens esculpidas, porque aqueles que não podiam honrar pessoalmente, porque moravam longe deles, fizeram representar o que se achava distante, e expuseram publicamente a imagem do rei venerado, a fim de lisonjeá-lo de longe com seu zelo, como se estivesse presente.
18 And to promote this observance among those to whom it was strange, the artisan's ambition provided a stimulus.	18 Isto contribuiu ainda para o estabelecimento deste culto, mesmo entre os que não conheciam o rei; foi a ambição do artista,
19 For he, mayhap in his determination to please the ruler, labored over the likeness to the best of his skill;	19 que, talvez, querendo agradar ao soberano, deu-lhe, por sua arte, a semelhança do belo;
20 And the masses, drawn by the charm of the workmanship, soon thought he should be worshiped who shortly before was honored as a man.	20 e a multidão, seduzida pelo encanto da obra, em breve tomou por deus aquele que tinham honrado como homem.
21 And this became a snare for mankind, that men enslaved to either grief or tyranny conferred the incommunicable Name on stocks and stones.	21 E isto foi uma cilada para a humanidade: os homens, sujeitando-se à lei da desgraça e da tirania, deram à pedra e à madeira o nome incomunicável.
22 Then it was not enough for them to err in their knowledge of God; but even though they live in a great war of ignorance, they call such evils peace.	22 Como se não bastasse terem errado acerca do conhecimento de Deus, embora passando a vida numa longa luta de ignorância, eles dão o nome de paz a um estado tão infeliz.
23 For while they celebrate either child-slaying sacrifices or clandestine mysteries, or frenzied carousals in unheard-of rites,	23 Com efeito, sacrificando seus filhos, celebrando mistérios ocultos, ou entregando-se a orgias desenfreadas de religiões exóticas,
24 They no longer safeguard either lives or pure wedlock; but each either waylays and kills his neighbor, or aggrieves him by adultery.	24 eles já não guardam a honestidade nem na vida nem no casamento, mas um faz desaparecer o outro pelo ardil, ou o ultraja pelo adultério.
25 And all is confusion-blood and murder, theft and guile, corruption, faithlessness, turmoil, perjury,	25 Tudo está numa confusão completa - sangue, homicídio, furto, fraude, corrupção, deslealdade, revolta, perjúrio,
26 Disturbance of good men, neglect of gratitude, besmirching of souls, unnatural lust, disorder in marriage, adultery and shamelessness.	26 perseguição dos bons, esquecimento dos benefícios, contaminação das almas, perversão dos sexos, instabilidade das uniões, adultérios e impudicícias -
27 For the worship of infamous idols is the reason and source and extremity of all evil.	27 porque o culto de inomináveis ídolos é o começo, a causa e o fim de todo o mal.
28 For they either go mad with enjoyment, or prophesy lies, or live lawlessly or lightly forswear themselves.	28 (Seus adeptos) incitam o prazer até a loucura, ou fazem vaticínios falsos, ou vivem na injustiça, ou, sem escrúpulo, juram falso,
29 For as their trust is in soulless idols, they expect no harm when they have sworn falsely.	29 porque, confiando em ídolos inanimados, esperam não ser punidos de sua má fé.
30 But on both counts shall justice overtake them: because they thought ill of God and devoted themselves to idols, and because they deliberately swore false oaths, despising piety.	30 Contudo, o castigo os atingirá por duplo motivo: porque eles desconheceram a Deus, afeiçoando-se aos ídolos, e porque são culpados, por desprezo à santidade da religião, de ter feito juramentos enganadores.
31 For not the might of those that are sworn by but the retribution of sinners ever follows upon the transgression of the wicked.	31 Pois não é o poder dos ídolos invocados, mas o castigo reservado ao pecador, que sempre persegue as faltas dos maus.
