1 All this I have kept in mind and recognized: the just, the wise, and their deeds are in the hand of God. Love from hatred man cannot tell; both appear equally vain,	1 PERCIOCCHÈ io mi ho recate tutte queste cose al cuore, eziandio per chiarir tutto questo: come i giusti e i savi, e i fatti loro, essendo nella man di Dio, gli uomini non conoscono nè l’amore, nè l’odio: tutto è davanti a loro.
2 in that there is the same lot for all, for the just and the wicked, for the good and the bad, for the clean and the unclean, for him who offers sacrifice and him who does not. As it is for the good man, so it is for the sinner; as it is for him who swears rashly, so it is for him who fears an oath.	2 Tutte le cose avvengono simigliantemente a tutti; un medesimo avvenimento avviene al giusto, ed all’empio; al buono e puro, ed all’immondo; a chi sacrifica, ed a chi non sacrifica; quale è il buono, tale è il peccatore; tal chi giura, qual chi teme di giurare.
3 Among all the things that happen under the sun, this is the worst, that things turn out the same for all. Hence the minds of men are filled with evil, and madness is in their hearts during life; and afterward they go to the dead.	3 Quest’è una cosa molesta, fra tutte quelle che si fanno sotto il sole, che un medesimo avvenimento avviene a tutti; ed anche, che mentre i figliuoli degli uomini sono in vita, il cuor loro è pien di male, ed hanno delle follie al cuore; e dopo ciò, vanno a’ morti
4 Indeed, for any among the living there is hope; a live dog is better off than a dead lion.	4 Perciocchè, chi è che faccia eccezione? Vi è qualche speranza per tutti quelli che sono in vita; conciossiachè la condizione d’un can vivo sia migliore che quella d’un leone morto.
5 For the living know that they are to die, but the dead no longer know anything. There is no further recompense for them, because all memory of them is lost.	5 Perciocchè i viventi sanno che morranno; ma i morti non sanno nulla, e non vi è più alcun premio per loro; perciocchè la lor memoria è dimenticata.
6 For them, love and hatred and rivalry have long since perished. They will never again have part in anything that is done under the sun.	6 Già e il loro amore, e il loro odio, e la loro invidia è perita; e non hanno giammai più parte alcuna in tutto quello che si fa sotto il sole.
7 Go, eat your bread with joy and drink your wine with a merry heart, because it is now that God favors your works.	7 Va’, mangia il tuo pane allegramente, e bevi il tuo vino di cuore lieto; se pure Iddio gradisce le tue opere.
8 At all times let your garments be white, and spare not the perfume for your head.	8 Sieno in ogni tempo i tuoi vestimenti bianchi; e l’olio odorifero non venga meno in sul tuo capo.
9 Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of the fleeting life that is granted you under the sun. This is your lot in life, for the toil of your labors under the sun.	9 Godi della vita con la moglie che tu ami, tutti i giorni della vita della tua vanità, i quali Iddio ti ha dati sotto il sole, tutto il tempo della tua vanità; perciocchè questa è la tua parte nella tua vita, e il frutto della tua fatica, che tu duri sotto il sole.
10 Anything you can turn your hand to, do with what power you have; for there will be no work, nor reason, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in the nether world where you are going....	10 Fa’ a tuo potere tutto quello che avrai modo di fare; perciocchè sotterra, ove tu vai, non vi è nè opera, nè ragione, nè conoscimento, nè sapienza alcuna
11 Again I saw under the sun that the race is not won by the swift, nor the battle by the valiant, nor a livelihood by the wise, nor riches by the shrewd, nor favor by the experts; for a time of calamity comes to all alike.	11 DI nuovo, io ho veduto sotto il sole, che il correre non è in poter de’ leggieri, nè il far la guerra in poter de’ prodi, nè l’aver del pane in poter de’ savi, nè l’acquistar ricchezze in poter de’ prudenti, nè d’essere in grazia in poter degl’intendenti; conciossiachè ad essi tutti avvengano tempi e casi.
12 Man no more knows his own time than fish taken in the fatal net, or birds trapped in the snare; like these the children of men are caught when the evil time falls suddenly upon them.	12 Perciocchè l’uomo non pur conosce il suo tempo. Come i pesci, che son presi con la mala rete; e come gli uccelli, che son colti col laccio; così sono allacciati i figliuoli degli uomini, al tempo dell’avversità, quando cade loro di subito addosso
13 On the other hand I saw this wise deed under the sun, which I thought sublime.	13 Pure ancora ho veduta questa sapienza sotto il sole, che mi è paruta grande:
14 Against a small city with few men in it advanced a mighty king, who surrounded it and threw up great siegeworks about it.	14 vi era una piccola città con pochi uomini dentro; ed un gran re venne contro ad essa, e l’intorniò, e fece di gran bastie contro ad essa;
15 But in the city lived a man who, though poor, was wise, and he delivered it through his wisdom. Yet no one remembered this poor man.	15 e in essa si trovò un povero uomo savio, il qual liberò la città con la sua sapienza, benchè niuno si ricordasse di quel povero uomo.
16 Though I had said, "Wisdom is better than force," yet the wisdom of the poor man is despised and his words go unheeded.	16 Allora io dissi: Meglio val sapienza che forza; benchè la sapienza del povero sia sprezzata, e che le sue parole non sieno ascoltate.
17 "The quiet words of the wise are better heeded than the shout of a ruler of fools"--!	17 Le parole de’ savi devono esser più quietamente ascoltate, che la grida d’un signore fra gli stolti.
18 "A fly that dies can spoil the perfumer's ointment, and a single slip can ruin much that is good."	18 La sapienza val meglio che gli strumenti bellici; ma un sol peccatore fa perire un gran bene
