1 All this I have kept in mind and recognized: the just, the wise, and their deeds are in the hand of God. Love from hatred man cannot tell; both appear equally vain,	1 J’ai donc réfléchi à tout cela et j’ai vu clairement que les justes, les sages et leurs travaux, sont dans la main de Dieu. Lui, en veut-il? Ne veut-il pas? Les humains ne le savent pas: tout peut leur arriver.
2 in that there is the same lot for all, for the just and the wicked, for the good and the bad, for the clean and the unclean, for him who offers sacrifice and him who does not. As it is for the good man, so it is for the sinner; as it is for him who swears rashly, so it is for him who fears an oath.	2 Et c’est déroutant que tous aient le même sort: le juste et le méchant, l’homme pur et celui qui ne l’est pas, celui qui offre des sacrifices et celui qui n’en offre pas, celui qui s’engage par un vœu et celui qui craint de le faire.
3 Among all the things that happen under the sun, this is the worst, that things turn out the same for all. Hence the minds of men are filled with evil, and madness is in their hearts during life; and afterward they go to the dead.	3 Voilà où est le mal dans tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil: tous ont le même sort; voilà pourquoi les fils d’Adam ont plein d’idées méchantes, et leurs pensées déraillent tout au long de leur vie en attendant de terminer chez les morts.
4 Indeed, for any among the living there is hope; a live dog is better off than a dead lion.	4 Tant qu’on se voit parmi les vivants, on garde son assurance: “Chien vivant vaut mieux que lion mort.”
5 For the living know that they are to die, but the dead no longer know anything. There is no further recompense for them, because all memory of them is lost.	5 Les vivants savent qu’ils mourront; les morts, eux, ne savent rien. Ils n’ont plus rien à attendre: ils ne sont plus qu’un souvenir oublié.
6 For them, love and hatred and rivalry have long since perished. They will never again have part in anything that is done under the sun.	6 Ils ont pu aimer, haïr, avoir des ambitions: tout s’est perdu et jamais plus ils ne prendront part à tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil.
7 Go, eat your bread with joy and drink your wine with a merry heart, because it is now that God favors your works.	7 Puisses-tu prendre plaisir au pain que tu manges et boire ton vin d’un cœur joyeux: ce sera un signe que Dieu est satisfait de ton travail.
8 At all times let your garments be white, and spare not the perfume for your head.	8 Puisses-tu porter toujours des habits blancs, et n’être pas à court d’huile pour parfumer ta tête.
9 Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of the fleeting life that is granted you under the sun. This is your lot in life, for the toil of your labors under the sun.	9 Jouis de la vie avec la femme que tu aimes, le temps que s’envolent les jours de ta vie. Car c’est là ta part en cette vie tout le temps que tu peines sous le soleil.
10 Anything you can turn your hand to, do with what power you have; for there will be no work, nor reason, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in the nether world where you are going....	10 Tout ce qui sera à ta portée et que tu te sens capable de faire, fais-le; car au séjour des morts où tu t’en vas, il n’y a ni travaux, ni problèmes, ni connaissance, ni sagesse.
11 Again I saw under the sun that the race is not won by the swift, nor the battle by the valiant, nor a livelihood by the wise, nor riches by the shrewd, nor favor by the experts; for a time of calamity comes to all alike.	11 J’ai vu encore ceci sous le soleil: le plus rapide n’est pas sûr de gagner la course, ni le plus courageux de gagner la bataille; le pain n’est pas assuré pour les sages, ni la richesse pour les intelligents, ni la meilleure place pour celui qui sait y faire. Car pour tous il y a l’occasion et il y a la malchance.
12 Man no more knows his own time than fish taken in the fatal net, or birds trapped in the snare; like these the children of men are caught when the evil time falls suddenly upon them.	12 Personne ne sait quand viendra son heure: les fils d’Adam se voient surpris par le malheur comme le poisson pris dans la nasse, comme l’oiseau sur qui se referme le piège.
13 On the other hand I saw this wise deed under the sun, which I thought sublime.	13 Parlons de sagesse: voici ce que j’ai vu sous le soleil, et qui ne m’a pas paru une petite chose.
14 Against a small city with few men in it advanced a mighty king, who surrounded it and threw up great siegeworks about it.	14 Il y avait une ville petite, avec peu d’habitants. Un grand roi se présente et l’assiège avec murs et fossés.
15 But in the city lived a man who, though poor, was wise, and he delivered it through his wisdom. Yet no one remembered this poor man.	15 Dans la ville, pourtant, il y a un homme plein d’astuce, un homme tout ordinaire, et grâce à son astuce la ville est sauvée. Mais c’était un homme tout ordinaire, et personne n’a plus pensé à lui.
16 Though I had said, "Wisdom is better than force," yet the wisdom of the poor man is despised and his words go unheeded.	16 Alors, moi je dis: la sagesse passe avant les exploits, mais quand il s’agit des pauvres, on méprise leur sagesse: ils peuvent parler, on ne les écoute pas.
17 "The quiet words of the wise are better heeded than the shout of a ruler of fools"--!	17 Les paroles des sages, dites dans le calme, font plus d’effet que le tapage d’un chef d’écervelés.
18 "A fly that dies can spoil the perfumer's ointment, and a single slip can ruin much that is good."	18 La sagesse a plus de pouvoir que les armes: une seule personne qui s’en moque détruit beaucoup de bonnes choses.
