1 Whoever might vainly hope to do so need only see him to be overthrown.	1 - Non c'è audace che voglia eccitarlo, perchè chi può resistere alla presenza sua?
2 Is he not relentless when aroused; who then dares stand before him?	2 Chi ha dato a me prima, onde io a lui restituisca? tutte le cose che stanno sotto al cielo, son mie!
3 Who has assailed him and come off safe-- Who under all the heavens?	3 Non voglio tacere circa le sue membra, e circa la forza e bellezza di sua armatura.
4 I need hardly mention his limbs, his strength, and the fitness of his armor.	4 Chi ha scoperto il disopra del suo manto, e in mezzo alla sua bocca chi è penetrato?
5 Who can strip off his outer garment, or penetrate his double corselet?	5 Le porte del suo muso chi mai le ha aperte? attorno alle sue zanne dimora il terrore.
6 Who can force open the doors of his mouth, close to his terrible teeth?	6 Il suo corpo è come di scudi fusi insieme, composto di squame che combaciano:
7 Rows of scales are on his back, tightly sealed together;	7 l'una con l'altra è congiunta, neppure un soffio passa tra loro;
8 They are fitted each so close to the next that no space intervenes;	8 l'una all'altra aderisce, e si tengono in guisa da non separarsi.
9 So joined one to another that they hold fast and cannot be parted.	9 Il suo starnuto è uno splendor di fuoco, e gli occhi suoi come le ciglia dell'aurora;
10 When he sneezes, light flashes forth; his eyes are like those of the dawn.	10 dalla sua bocca escono faci, come fiaccole di vivo fuoco;
11 Out of his mouth go forth firebrands; sparks of fire leap forth.	11 dalle sue froge vien fuori fumo, come da caldaio acceso e bollente:
12 From his nostrils issues steam, as from a seething pot or bowl.	12 il suo soffio accende tizzoni, ed una vampa dalla sua bocca esce.
13 His breath sets coals afire; a flame pours from his mouth.	13 Nel suo collo risiede la forza, dinanzi a lui precede la squallidezza.
14 Strength abides in his neck, and terror leaps before him.	14 Le membra delle sue carni sono compatte: lanciandosi contro esso fulmini, non si volgono altrove.
	15 Il suo cuore è duro come pietra, e saldo come l'incudine del fucinatore.
16 His heart is hard as stone; his flesh, as the lower millstone.	16 Quand'esso si rizza ne temono gli angeli, e sbigottiti si discolpano.
17 When he rises up, the mighty are afraid; the waves of the sea fall back.	17 La spada che lo assale non resiste, nè la lancia, nè la corazza.
18 Should the sword reach him, it will not avail; nor will the spear, nor the dart, nor the javelin.	18 Reputa egli come paglia di ferro, come legno putrido il bronzo.
19 He regards iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood.	19 Non lo mette in fuga l'arciere, in stoppa si cambiano per lui le pietre di fionda.
20 The arrow will not put him to flight; slingstones used against him are but straws.	20 Come stoppa egli reputa la mazza, della lancia imbrandita esso si burla.
21 Clubs he esteems as splinters; he laughs at the crash of the spear.	21 Sotto di lui vi sono raggi di sole, egli giace sull'orlo come fosse fango.
22 His belly is sharp as pottery fragments; he spreads like a threshing sledge upon the mire.	22 Fa bollire come caldaia il profondo mare, lo riduce come a un [vaso d']unguento che spuma;
23 He makes the depths boil like a pot; the sea he churns like perfume in a kettle.	23 dietro a lui risplende il sentiero, si crederebbe che l'abisso sia canuto.
24 Behind him he leaves a shining path; you would think the deep had the hoary head of age.	24 Non v'è sulla terra una forza somigliante a lui, che fu fatto per non temer nessuno;
25 Upon the earth there is not his like, intrepid he was made.	25 ogni essere eccelso egli mira [con disprezzo], è re su tutti i figli di fierezza.»
