1 The Jews in Jerusalem and in the land of Judea send greetings to their brethren, the Jews in Egypt, and wish them true peace!	1 Ai fratelli Giudei dell'Egitto, i fratelli Giudei che sono in Gerusalemme e nella regione della Giudea, salute e pace benefica.
2 May God bless you and remember his covenant with his faithful servants, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.	2 Dio vi ricolmi di benefici e si ricordi della sua alleanza con Abramo, Isacco e Giacobbe, suoi servi fedeli.
3 May he give to all of you a heart to worship him and to do his will readily and generously.	3 Doni a tutti volontà per onorarlo e per compiere i suoi voleri, con cuore grande e animo volenteroso.
4 May he open your heart to his law and his commandments and grant you peace.	4 Vi apra il cuore alla sua legge e ai suoi precetti e vi dia pace.

7 In the reign of Demetrius, the year one hundred and sixty-nine, we Jews wrote to you during the trouble and violence that overtook us in those years after Jason and his followers had revolted against the holy land and the kingdom,	7 Sotto il regno di Demetrio, nell'anno 169, noi Giudei vi scrivemmo: "Nella tribolazione e nell'angustia che si è abbattuta su di noi in questi anni, da quando Giasone e i suoi, tradita la terra santa e il regno,
8 setting fire to the gatehouse and shedding innocent blood. But we prayed to the Lord, and our prayer was heard; we offered sacrifices and fine flour; we lighted the lamps and set out the loaves of bread.	8 incendiarono il portale e versarono sangue innocente, noi abbiamo pregato il Signore e siamo stati esauditi; abbiamo offerto un sacrificio e fior di farina, abbiamo acceso le lampade ed esposti i pani".

10 Dated in the year one hundred and eighty-eight. The people of Jerusalem and Judea, the senate, and Judas send greetings and good wishes to Aristobulus, counselor of King Ptolemy and member of the family of the anointed priests, and to the Jews in Egypt.	10 Gli abitanti di Gerusalemme e della Giudea, il consiglio degli anziani e Giuda, ad Aristobulo, precettore del re Tolomeo, della stirpe dei sacerdoti consacrati, e ai Giudei che sono in Egitto, salute e prosperità!
11 Since we have been saved by God from grave dangers, we give him great thanks for having fought on our side against the king;	11 Da Dio salvati da grandi pericoli, grandemente lo ringraziamo per essere riusciti a schierarci contro il re,
12 it was he who drove out those who fought against the holy city.	12 poiché egli stesso ha ricacciato coloro che si erano schierati contro la santa città.
13 When their leader arrived in Persia with his seemingly irresistible army, they were cut to pieces in the temple of the goddess Nanea through a deceitful stratagem employed by Nanea's priests.	13 Infatti il loro capo, essendo in Persia, fu fatto a pezzi insieme al suo esercito che sembrava imbattibile, nel tempio di Nanea, grazie ad un tranello tesogli dai sacerdoti di Nanea.
14 On the pretext of marrying the goddess, Antiochus with his Friends had come to the place to get its great treasures by way of dowry.	14 Difatti Antioco, con i suoi amici, si era recato in quel posto come per sposarsi con la dea, allo scopo però di prendersi le sue molte ricchezze a titolo di dote.
15 When the priests of the Nanaeon had displayed the treasures, Antiochus with a few attendants came to the temple precincts. As soon as he entered the temple, the priests locked the doors.	15 Quando, dunque, egli si presentò con poche persone entro il recinto del tempio, i sacerdoti del Naneio gliele mostrarono; ma poi, chiuso il santuario appena Antioco fu entrato,
16 Then they opened a hidden trapdoor in the ceiling, hurled stones at the leader and his companions and struck them down. 18 We shall be celebrating the purification of the temple on the twenty-fifth day of the month Chislev, so we thought it right to inform you, that you too may celebrate the feast of Booths and of the fire that appeared when Nehemiah, the rebuilder of the temple and the altar, offered sacrifices.	18 Stando noi per celebrare, il 25 di Casleu, la purificazione del tempio, abbiamo creduto necessario informarvi, affinché anche voi celebriate la festa delle Capanne e del fuoco, apparso quando Neemia, riedificato il tempio e l'altare, offrì sacrifici.
19 When our fathers were being exiled to Persia, devout priests of the time took some of the fire from the altar and hid it secretly in the hollow of a dry cistern, making sure that the place would be unknown to anyone.	19 Infatti quando i nostri padri furono condotti in Persia, alcuni pii sacerdoti, preso il fuoco dall'altare, segretamente lo nascosero nella cavità di un pozzo asciutto, nel quale lo posero al sicuro in modo che il luogo rimanesse a tutti ignoto.
20 Many years later, when it so pleased God, Nehemiah, commissioned by the king of Persia, sent the descendants of the priests who had hidden the fire to look for it.	20 Passati molti anni, quando a Dio piacque, Neemia, inviato dal re di Persia, mandò a cercare il fuoco alcuni discendenti dei sacerdoti che lo avevano nascosto. Avendo però questi riferito di non aver trovato il fuoco, bensì acqua grassa, egli comandò loro di attingerla e di portarla.
21 When they informed us that they could not find any fire, but only muddy water, he ordered them to scoop some out and bring it. After the material for the sacrifices had been prepared, Nehemiah ordered the priests to sprinkle with the water the wood and what lay on it.	21 Quando tutto fu pronto per i sacrifici, Neemia comandò ancora ai sacerdoti di cospargere con l'acqua la legna e le cose sovrapposte.
22 When this was done and in time the sun, which had been clouded over, began to shine, a great fire blazed up, so that everyone marveled.	22 Così fu fatto e, dopo qualche tempo il sole, che prima era velato da nubi, incominciò a risplendere e si accese un gran fuoco, sicché tutti ne restarono ammirati.
23 While the sacrifice was being burned, the priests recited a prayer, and all present joined in with them, Jonathan leading and the rest responding with Nehemiah.	23 Mentre il sacrificio si consumava, i sacerdoti facevano la preghiera e con i sacerdoti tutti gli altri. Gionata incominciava e gli altri con Neemia rispondevano.
24 The prayer was as follows: "Lord, Lord God, creator of all things, awesome and strong, just and merciful, the only king and benefactor,	24 La preghiera era così concepita: "Signore, Signore Dio, creatore di tutte le cose, terribile, forte, giusto e misericordioso, solo re e solo buono,
25 who alone are gracious, just, almighty, and eternal, Israel's savior from all evil, who chose our forefathers and sanctified them:	25 solo generoso, solo giusto, onnipotente ed eterno, che salvi Israele da ogni male, che hai fatto dei nostri padri degli eletti e li hai santificati,
26 accept this sacrifice on behalf of all your people Israel and guard and sanctify your heritage.	26 accetta il sacrificio per tutto il tuo popolo d'Israele, custodisci la tua porzione e santificala.
27 Gather together our scattered people, free those who are the slaves of the Gentiles, look kindly on those who are despised and detested, and let the Gentiles know that you are our God.	27 Raduna i nostri dispersi, libera quelli che sono schiavi in mezzo alle genti, riguarda quelli che sono disprezzati e oltraggiati e riconoscano le genti che tu sei il nostro Dio.
28 Punish those who tyrannize over us and arrogantly mistreat us.	28 Castiga quelli che ci opprimono e ci ingiuriano con superbia.
29 Plant your people in your holy place, as Moses promised."	29 Pianta il tuo popolo nel tuo santo luogo, come ha detto Mosè".
30 Then the priests began to sing hymns.	30 I sacerdoti intanto cantavano gli inni.
31 After the sacrifice was burned, Nehemiah ordered the rest of the liquid to be poured upon large stones.	31 Quando il sacrificio fu consumato, Neemia ordinò di versare l'acqua rimanente su grandi pietre.
32 As soon as this was done, a flame blazed up, but its light was lost in the brilliance cast from a light on the altar.	32 Come ciò fu fatto, apparve una fiamma, la quale fu assorbita dalla luce che risplendeva sull'altare.
33 When the event became known and the king of the Persians was told that, in the very place where the exiled priests had hidden the fire, a liquid was found with which Nehemiah and his people had burned the sacrifices,	33 Quando il fatto fu divulgato, anche al re dei Persiani fu riferito che nel luogo ove i sacerdoti deportati avevano nascosto il fuoco era apparsa un'acqua con la quale i compagni di Neemia avevano purificato l'occorrente per il sacrificio.
34 the king, after verifying the fact, fenced the place off and declared it sacred.	34 Accertatosi del fatto, il re fece allora recingere il luogo e lo dichiarò sacro.
35 To those on whom the king wished to bestow favors he distributed the large revenues he received there.	35 Il re riceveva molti doni da quelli che egli favoriva e ne dava loro.
36 Nehemiah and his companions called the liquid nephthar, meaning purification, but most people named it naphtha.	36 I compagni di Neemia chiamarono questo liquido nephtar, che significa "purificazione"; ma da molti è chiamato nephtai.
