1 The Jews in Jerusalem and in the land of Judea send greetings to their brethren, the Jews in Egypt, and wish them true peace!	1 - « Ai fratelli giudei dell'Egitto, I fratelli giudei di Gerusalemme e della Giudea, augurano salute e pace buona.
2 May God bless you and remember his covenant with his faithful servants, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.	2 Vi sia propizio il Signore, e si ricordi del patto conchiuso con Abramo, Isacco e Giacobbe suoi servi fedeli.
3 May he give to all of you a heart to worship him and to do his will readily and generously.	3 Metta in cuore a voi tutti di servirlo» e fare la sua volontà generosamente e di buon grado.
4 May he open your heart to his law and his commandments and grant you peace.	4 Apra il vostro cuore alla sua legge ed ai suol precetti, e vi dia pace.
5 May he hear your prayers, and be reconciled to you, and never forsake you in time of adversity.	5 Esaudisca le vostre preghiere, si riconcili con voi, e non v’abbandoni nel momenti tristi.
6 Even now we are praying for you here.	6 Noi poi stiamo pregando per voi.
7 In the reign of Demetrius, the year one hundred and sixty-nine, we Jews wrote to you during the trouble and violence that overtook us in those years after Jason and his followers had revolted against the holy land and the kingdom,	7 Regnando Demetrio, Panno centosessantanove, noi Giudei vi scrivemmo nella tribolazione ed angustia che cl sopravvenne in quegli anni, da quando Giasone si separò dalla terra santa e dal regno.
8 setting fire to the gatehouse and shedding innocent blood. But we prayed to the Lord, and our prayer was heard; we offered sacrifices and fine flour; we lighted the lamps and set out the loaves of bread.	8 Incendiarono la porta [del tempio], e versarono il sangue innocente. Noi però pregammo il Signore, e fummo esauditi; offerimmo il sacrifizio ed il fior di farina, accendemmo le lampade, e deponemmo i pani.
9 We are now reminding you to celebrate the feast of Booths in the month of Chislev.	9 Voi dunque, celebrate ora i giorni della scenopegia del mese di Casleu.
10 Dated in the year one hundred and eighty-eight. The people of Jerusalem and Judea, the senate, and Judas send greetings and good wishes to Aristobulus, counselor of King Ptolemy and member of the family of the anointed priests, and to the Jews in Egypt.	10 L'anno centottantotto, Il popolo di Gerusalemme e della Giudea, il senato, e Giuda, ad Aristobolo, della stirpe de' sacerdoti consacrati, maestro del re Tolomeo, ed ai Giudei che sono in Egitto; salute e prosperità.
11 Since we have been saved by God from grave dangers, we give him great thanks for having fought on our side against the king;	11 Liberati da Dio da grandi pericoli, a lui ne rendiamo grazie solenni avendo dovuto difenderci da un tal re.
12 it was he who drove out those who fought against the holy city.	12 Fu egli infatti a rovesciare su noi dalla Persia quella schiuma che assalì noi e la santa città.
13 When their leader arrived in Persia with his seemingly irresistible army, they were cut to pieces in the temple of the goddess Nanea through a deceitful stratagem employed by Nanea's priests.	13 Ma poi, essendo in Persia egli stesso il duce, e con lui un esercito numerosissimo, finì nel tempio di Nanea, per insidia tesagli da quel sacerdoti.
14 On the pretext of marrying the goddess, Antiochus with his Friends had come to the place to get its great treasures by way of dowry.	14 Venne infatti con molti amici al tempio di lei per sposarla, e ricevervi a titolo di dote una gran somma.
15 When the priests of the Nanaeon had displayed the treasures, Antiochus with a few attendants came to the temple precincts. As soon as he entered the temple, the priests locked the doors.	15 I sacerdoti di Nanea misero fuori il danaro, ed egli con pochi entrò nel recinto del tempio; ma come Antioco fu entrato, quelli chiusero il tempio,
16 Then they opened a hidden trapdoor in the ceiling, hurled stones at the leader and his companions and struck them down. They dismembered the bodies, cut off their heads and tossed them to the people outside.	16 ed aperto un ingresso segreto, a colpi di pietra uccisero il duce e quelli che eran con lui; e fattili a pezzi, e tagliate loro le teste, li gettaron fuori.
17 Forever blessed be our God, who has thus punished the wicked!	17 In tutto sia benedetto Iddio, che ha punito gli empii.
18 We shall be celebrating the purification of the temple on the twenty-fifth day of the month Chislev, so we thought it right to inform you, that you too may celebrate the feast of Booths and of the fire that appeared when Nehemiah, the rebuilder of the temple and the altar, offered sacrifices.	18 Ora dunque che ai venticinque del mese di Casleu siamo per celebrare la purificazione del tempio, abbiamo creduto necessario parteciparvelo, affinchè anche voi celebriate il giorno del tabernacoli, ed il giorno del fuoco che ci fu mandato [da Dio], quando Neemia, riedificato il tempio e l'altare, offrì i sacrifizii.
19 When our fathers were being exiled to Persia, devout priests of the time took some of the fire from the altar and hid it secretly in the hollow of a dry cistern, making sure that the place would be unknown to anyone.	19 Quando invero i padri nostri furon condotti in Persia, dei sacerdoti timorati di Dio, preso il fuoco dall'altare, segretamente lo nascosero in una valle, dov'era un pozzo profondo ed asciutto; ed ivi lo misero al sicuro, in modo che a tutti restò sconosciuto quel luogo.
20 Many years later, when it so pleased God, Nehemiah, commissioned by the king of Persia, sent the descendants of the priests who had hidden the fire to look for it.	20 Ma, passati molti anni, quando a Dio piacque che Neemia fosse rimandato dal re di Persia, spedi a ricercare il fuoco i nipoti di quei sacerdoti che l'avevano nascosto; e, confessi raccontarono, non trovarono fuoco ma acqua grossa.
21 When they informed us that they could not find any fire, but only muddy water, he ordered them to scoop some out and bring it. After the material for the sacrifices had been prepared, Nehemiah ordered the priests to sprinkle with the water the wood and what lay on it.	21 Egli comandò che ne attingessero, e gliela portassero; e pei sacrifizi già preparati, comandò Neemia sacerdote che fossero asperse con quell'acqua le legna e le vittime sovrappostevi.
22 When this was done and in time the sun, which had been clouded over, began to shine, a great fire blazed up, so that everyone marveled.	22 Ora, come ciò fu fatto, e come venne il momento che brillò il sole prima nascosto fra le nuvole, s’accese un gran fuoco, si che tutti rimasero stupiti.
23 While the sacrifice was being burned, the priests recited a prayer, and all present joined in with them, Jonathan leading and the rest responding with Nehemiah.	23 E mentre le vittime si consumavano, tutti i sacerdoti facevano orazione; Gionata incominciava, e gli altri rispondevano.
24 The prayer was as follows: "Lord, Lord God, creator of all things, awesome and strong, just and merciful, the only king and benefactor,	24 L'orazione poi di Neemia era in questi termini: - Signore Iddio, creatore d’ogni cosa, terribile e forte, giusto e misericordioso, che sei il solo re buono,
25 who alone are gracious, just, almighty, and eternal, Israel's savior from all evil, who chose our forefathers and sanctified them:	25 solo eccellente, solo giusto onnipotente ed eterno, che liberi Israele da ogni male, che eleggesti i nostri padri e li santificasti;
26 accept this sacrifice on behalf of all your people Israel and guard and sanctify your heritage.	26 accogli questo sacrifizio per tutto il tuo popolo di Israele, custodisci e santifica la tua porzione.
27 Gather together our scattered people, free those who are the slaves of the Gentiles, look kindly on those who are despised and detested, and let the Gentiles know that you are our God.	27 Riunisci i nostri che son dispersi, libera quelli che sono schiavi delle genti, riguarda quelli che son disprczzati e maledetti, sì che le genti sappiano che tu sei il nostro Dio.
28 Punish those who tyrannize over us and arrogantly mistreat us.	28 Affliggi quei che ci opprimono, e superbamente cl conculcano;
29 Plant your people in your holy place, as Moses promised."	29 e stabilisci il tuo popolo nel tuo luogo santo, come disse Mosè. -
30 Then the priests began to sing hymns.	30 I sacerdoti poi cantavano inni, sinché tutto tl sacrifizio si consumasse.
31 After the sacrifice was burned, Nehemiah ordered the rest of the liquid to be poured upon large stones.	31 Consumato che fu, Neemia comandò che la rimanente acqua fosse versata su delle grosse pietre.
32 As soon as this was done, a flame blazed up, but its light was lost in the brilliance cast from a light on the altar.	32 Ciò fatto anche da quelle s’accese una fiamma, la quale però fu assorbita dal fuoco dell'altare.
33 When the event became known and the king of the Persians was told that, in the very place where the exiled priests had hidden the fire, a liquid was found with which Nehemiah and his people had burned the sacrifices,	33 Quando la cosa si divulgò, fu riferito al re di Persia che, nel luogo dove i sacerdoti deportati avevano nascosto il fuoco s'era trovata dell'acqua, con la quale Neemia ed i suoi compagni avevano santificati i sacrifizi.
34 the king, after verifying the fact, fenced the place off and declared it sacred.	34 Il re, considerata la cosa, e diligentemente verificatala, vi fece un tempio a testimonianza del fatto;
35 To those on whom the king wished to bestow favors he distributed the large revenues he received there.	35 ed accertatosi della cosa, donò ai sacerdoti molti beni, e più e più donativi che egli di sua mano distribuì loro.
36 Nehemiah and his companions called the liquid nephthar, meaning purification, but most people named it naphtha.	36 Neemia poi dette a quel luogo il nome di Neftar, che vuol dire purificazione; e molti lo chiamano Nefi.
