1 In the year one hundred and fifty-one, Demetrius, son of Seleucus, set out from Rome, arrived with a few men in a city on the seacoast, and began to rule there.	1 L'anno centocinquantuno, Demetrio figlio di Seleuco, partì da Roma, e, giunto con poca gente ad una città marittima, vi cominciò a regnare.
2 As he was preparing to enter the royal palace of his ancestors, the soldiers seized Antiochus and Lysias to bring them to him.	2 Appena egli fu entrato nel regno dei suoi padri, l'esercito mise le mani addosso ad Antioco e a Lisia, per menarli a lui.
3 When he was informed of this, he said, "Do not show me their faces."	3 Appena ne fu avvertito, disse: « Non me li fate nemmen vedere ».
4 So the soldiers killed them, and Demetrius sat on the royal throne.	4 I soldati li uccisero; e Demetrio si assise sul trono del suo regno.
5 Then all the lawless and impious men of Israel came to him. They were led by Alcimus, who desired to be high priest.	5 Allora alcuni uomini malvagi ed empi d'Israele, con a capo Alcimo, che voleva essere sommo sacerdote, andarono a lui,
6 They made this accusation to the king against the people: "Judas and his brothers have destroyed all your friends and have driven us out of our country.	6 e accusarono la loro nazione presso il re, dicendo: « Giuda e i suoi fratelli hanno fatto perire tutti i tuoi amici, e ci hanno cacciati dal nostro paese.
7 So now, send a man whom you trust to go and see all the havoc Judas has done to us and to the king's land, and let him punish them and all their supporters."	7 Or tu manda una persona di tua fiducia a riconoscere le rovine che esso ha fatte a noi e alle provincie del re, e a punire tutti gli amici di lui ed i loro fautori ».
8 Then the king chose Bacchides, one of the King's Friends, governor of West-of-Euphrates, a great man in the kingdom, and faithful to the king.	8 Il re scelse, tra i suoi amici, Bacchide, il quale comandava nel regno di là dal gran fiume, ed era fedele al re.
9 He sent him and the impious Alcimus, to whom he granted the high priesthood, with orders to take revenge on the Israelites.	9 Lo spedì a vedere lo sterminio fatto da Giuda. Di più diede il pontificato all'empio Alcimo, ordinandogli di far le vendette contro i figli d'Israele.
10 They set out and, on arriving in the land of Judah with a great army, sent messengers who spoke deceitfully to Judas and his brothers in peaceful terms.	10 E si mossero, ed entrarono con grande esercito nella terra di Giuda, e mandarono ambasciatori a dire a Giuda e ai suoi fratelli parole di pace, per ingannarli;
11 But these paid no attention to their words, seeing that they had come with a great army.	11 ma essi, vedendo che eran venuti con grande esercito, non diedero importanza alle loro parole.
12 A group of scribes, however, gathered about Alcimus and Bacchides to ask for a just agreement.	12 Invece una schiera di scribi si presentarono ad Alcimo e a Bacchide per domandar loro il giusto;
13 The Hasideans were the first among the Israelites to seek peace with them,	13 ed anche quelli che erano i primi tra i figli d'Israele, gli Assidei, chiedevano loro la pace;
14 for they said, "A priest of the line of Aaron has come with the army, and he will not do us any wrong."	14 perchè dicevano: « Viene uno che è sacerdote della stirpe d'Aronne, egli non c'ingannerà ».
15 He spoke with them peacefully and swore to them, "We will not try to injure you or your friends."	15 Ed egli rivolse loro parole di pace, e con giuramento disse loro: « Non faremo alcun male, nè a voi nè ai vostri amici ».
16 So they trusted him. But he arrested sixty of them and killed them in one day, according to the text of Scripture:	16 E gli credettero; ma egli, fatti prendere sessanta uomini dei loro, li fece uccidere in un sol giorno, secondo la parola che sta scritta:
17 "The flesh of your saints they have strewn, and their blood they have shed round about Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them."	17 « Gettarono intorno a Gerusalemme le carni dei tuoi santi, e il loro sangue, e non c'era chi desse loro sepoltura ».
18 Then fear and dread of them came upon all the people, who said: "There is no truth or justice among them; they violated the agreement and the oath that they swore."	18 Allora tutto il popolo fu preso da timore e da tremito, e disse: « Non c'è nè verità nè giustizia tra loro, perchè han violati i patti e il giuramento che ha fatto ».
19 Bacchides withdrew from Jerusalem and pitched his camp in Beth-zaith. He had many of the men arrested who deserted to him, throwing them into the great pit.	19 Allora Bacchide levò il campo da Gerusalemme e andò a porlo a Betzeca, e mandò a imprigionare molti che s'erano ritirati da lui, e alcuni del popolo li fece uccidere e gettare in un gran pozzo.
20 He handed the province over to Alcimus, leaving troops to help him, while he himself returned to the king.	20 E dopo avere affidato il paese ad Alcimo, lasciando a lui truppe d'aiuto, Bacchide se ne tornò dal re.
21 Alcimus spared no pains to maintain his high priesthood,	21 Or Alcimo faceva di tutto per stabilire il principato del suo sacerdozio; si radunarono intorno a lui tutti i perturbatori del loro popolo, e si resero padroni
22 and all those who were disturbing their people gathered about him. They took possession of the land of Judah and caused great distress in Israel.	22 della terra di Giuda, e fecero grandi mali ad Israele.
23 When Judas saw all the evils that Alcimus and his men were bringing upon the Israelites, more than even the Gentiles had done,	23 Ma Giuda, vedendo i mali fatti contro i figli d'Israele da Alcimo e da quelli che eran con lui, mali peggiori di quelli fatti dalle nazioni,
24 he went about all the borders of Judea and took revenge on the men who had deserted, preventing them from going out into the country.	24 andò in giro per tutto il territorio della Giudea, a prender le vendette contro i disertori, i quali finirono di scorrazzare per la regione.
25 But when Alcimus saw that Judas and his followers were gaining strength and realized that he could not oppose them, he returned to the king and accused them of grave crimes.	25 Allora Alcimo, vedendo che Giuda e i suoi partigiani eran superiori di forze, e conoscendo di non poter fare ad essi resistenza, se ne tornò dal re, e li accusò di molti delitti.
26 Then the king sent Nicanor, one of his famous officers, who was a bitter enemy of Israel, with orders to destroy the people.	26 Il re mandò Nicanore, uno dei suoi più grandi generali, nemico dichiarato d'Israele, e gli ordinò di sterminare quel popolo.
27 Nicanor came to Jerusalem with a large force and deceitfully sent to Judas and his brothers this peaceable message:	27 Giunto a Gerusalemme con grande esercito, Nicànore mandò gente a parlare di pace con Giuda e coi suoi fratelli per ingannarli,
28 "Let there be no fight between me and you. I will come with a few men to meet you peaceably."	28 col dire: « Non ci sia guerra tra me e voi: io verrò con poca gente a vedervi amichevolmente ».
29 So he came to Judas, and they greeted one another peaceably. But Judas' enemies were prepared to seize him.	29 Così andò a trovar Giuda e si salutarono cortesemente l'un l'altro; ma i nemici stavano pronti per impadronirsi di Giuda,
30 When he became aware that Nicanor had come to him with treachery in mind, Judas was afraid and would not meet him again.	30 il quale, saputo che egli era venuto con cattive intenzioni, n'ebbe paura, e non volle più vederlo.
31 When Nicanor saw that his plan had been discovered, he went out to fight Judas near Capharsalama.	31 Allora Nicànore, accortosi che le sue trame erano scoperte, andò ad attaccare Giuda presso Cafarsalama.
32 About five hundred men of Nicanor's army fell; the rest fled to the City of David.	32 Dell'esercito di Nicànore restarono uccisi circa cinque mila uomini, e il resto se ne fuggi nella città di David.
33 After this, Nicanor went up to Mount Zion. Some of the priests from the sanctuary and some of the elders of the people came out to greet him peaceably and to show him the holocaust that was being offered for the king.	33 Dopo questi fatti, Nicànore salì al monte di Sion, e alcuni sacerdoti gli uscirono incontro a salutarlo amichevolmente, e a fargli vedere gli olocausti che erano offerti pel re.
34 But he mocked and ridiculed them, defiled them, and spoke disdainfully.	34 Ma egli li derise, li trattò con disprezzo, li contaminò, parlò superbamente,
35 In a rage he swore: "If Judas and his army are not delivered to me at once, when I return victorious I will burn this temple down." He went away in great anger.	35 e, giurando, pieno di collera, disse: « Se non mi sarà dato nelle mani Giuda e il suo esercito, appena tornerò vittorioso, darò alle fiamme questa casa ». E se ne andò fieramente sdegnato.
36 The priests, however, went in and stood before the altar and the sanctuary. They wept and said:	36 Allora i sacerdoti, rientrati, stettero dinanzi all'altare e al tempio, e dissero piangendo:
37 "You have chosen this house to bear your name, to be a house of prayer and petition for your people.	37 « Tu, o Signore, che eleggesti questa casa, perchè vi fosso invocato il tuo nome, ed essa fosse casa d'orazione e di preghiera pel tuo popolo,
38 Take revenge on this man and his army, and let them fall by the sword. Remember their blasphemies, and do not let them continue."	38 castiga quest'uomo e il suo esercito, falli perir sotto la spada; ricordati delle loro bestemmie, e non permettere che sussistano ».
39 Nicanor left Jerusalem and pitched his camp at Beth-horon, where the Syrian army joined him.	39 Nicanore, lasciata Gerusalemme, s'accampò vicino a Betoron, e s'unì a lui l'esercito della Siria,
40 But Judas camped in Adasa with three thousand men. Here Judas uttered this prayer:	40 mentre Giuda con tre mila uomini s'accampava in Adarsa. Giuda pregò e disse:
41 "When they who were sent by the king blasphemed, your angel went out and killed a hundred and eighty-five thousand of them.	41 « O Signore, l'angelo tuo, siccome i nunzi mandati da Sennacherib bestemmiarono contro di te, scese e ne uccise centottantacinque mila.
42 In the same way, crush this army before us today, and let the rest know that Nicanor spoke wickedly against your sanctuary; judge him according to his wickedness."	42 Così in questo giorno stermina dinanzi a noi quest'esercito, affinchè tutti gli altri riconoscano come egli abbia indegnamente parlato del tuo santuario: giudicalo secondo la sua malvagità ».
43 The armies met in battle on the thirteenth day of the month Adar. Nicanor's army was crushed, and he himself was the first to fall in the battle.	43 Gli eserciti attaccarono la battaglia ai tredici del mese di Adar: le truppe di Nicànore furono sconfitte, e Nicànore fu il primo a morire nel combattimento.
44 When his army saw that Nicanor was dead, they threw down their arms and fled.	44 Le truppe di Nicànore, veduto Nicànore tra i morti, gettarono le armi e fuggirono.
45 The Jews pursued them a day's journey, from Adasa to near Gazara, blowing the trumpets behind them as signals.	45 I Giudei l'inseguirono per un'intera giornata, da Adazer fino a Gazara, sonando dietro ad essi le trombe, come segnale.
46 From all the surrounding villages of Judea people came out and closed in on them. They hemmed them in, and all the enemies fell by the sword; not a single one escaped.	46 Così la gente usciva dai castelli di Giuda che erano all'intorno, e dava loro addosso in modo da far loro voltar la faccia ai vincitori, e cosi perirono tutti sotto la spada non ne restò neppure uno.
47 Then the Jews collected the spoils and the booty; they cut off Nicanor's head and his right arm, which he had lifted up so arrogantly. These they brought to Jerusalem and displayed there.	47 (I Giudei) presero le loro spoglie, troncarono a Nicànore la testa e la mano destra, che egli aveva alzata con tanta superbia, le portarono e le appesero in vista di Gerusalemme.
48 The people rejoiced greatly, and observed that day as a great festival.	48 Il popolo fu ricolmo di gioia, e passarono quel giorno in gran festa.
49 They decreed that it should be observed every year on the thirteenth of Adar.	49 Fu stabilito che ogni anno, ai tredici del mese di Adar, fosse celebrata quella festa.
50 And for a short time the land of Judah was quiet.	50 E la terra di Giuda ebbe pace per un po' di tempo.
