1 Maccabees 7

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 In the year one hundred and fifty-one, Demetrius, son of Seleucus, set out from Rome, arrived with a few men in a city on the seacoast, and began to rule there.	1 L'année 151, Démétrius fils de Séleucus quitta Rome, et aborda avec un petit nombred'hommes dans une ville maritime où il inaugura son règne.
2 As he was preparing to enter the royal palace of his ancestors, the soldiers seized Antiochus and Lysias to bring them to him.	2 Il arriva, comme il gagnait la résidence royale de ses pères, que l'armée se saisit d'Antiochuset de Lysias pour les lui amener.
3 When he was informed of this, he said, "Do not show me their faces."	3 Lorsqu'il eut connaissance de la chose, il dit: "Ne me faites point voir leur visage."
4 So the soldiers killed them, and Demetrius sat on the royal throne.	4 L'armée les tua et Démétrius s'assit sur son trône.
5 Then all the lawless and impious men of Israel came to him. They were led by Alcimus, who desired to be high priest.	5 Alors tous les hommes d'Israël sans loi ni piété vinrent le trouver, conduits par Alkime, quivoulait exercer la charge de grand prêtre.
6 They made this accusation to the king against the people: "Judas and his brothers have destroyed all your friends and have driven us out of our country.	6 Ils accusèrent le peuple devant le roi en disant: "Judas et ses frères ont fait périr tous tes amiset il nous a expulsés de notre pays.
7 So now, send a man whom you trust to go and see all the havoc Judas has done to us and to the king's land, and let him punish them and all their supporters."	7 Envoie donc maintenant un homme en qui tu aies confiance: qu'il aille voir tous les ravagesque Judas a exercés parmi nous et dans les domaines du roi, pour qu'il punisse ces gens-là et tous ceux qui leurviennent en aide."
8 Then the king chose Bacchides, one of the King's Friends, governor of West-of-Euphrates, a great man in the kingdom, and faithful to the king.	8 Le souverain choisit Bacchidès, un des amis du roi, gouverneur de la Transeuphratène, granddu royaume et fidèle au roi.
9 He sent him and the impious Alcimus, to whom he granted the high priesthood, with orders to take revenge on the Israelites.	9 Il l'envoya avec l'impie Alkime, à qui il confirma le sacerdoce, et lui enjoignit de tirervengeance des Israélites.
10 They set out and, on arriving in the land of Judah with a great army, sent messengers who spoke deceitfully to Judas and his brothers in peaceful terms.	10 S'étant mis en route, ils vinrent avec une nombreuse armée au pays de Juda. Ils envoyèrent àJudas et à ses frères des messagers porteurs de propositions pacifiques mais trompeuses.
11 But these paid no attention to their words, seeing that they had come with a great army.	11 Mais eux n'accordèrent aucun crédit à leurs discours, voyant qu'ils étaient venus avec uneforte armée.
12 A group of scribes, however, gathered about Alcimus and Bacchides to ask for a just agreement.	12 Cependant une commission de scribes se réunit chez Alkime et Bacchidès pour chercher unesolution équitable.
13 The Hasideans were the first among the Israelites to seek peace with them,	13 Les Assidéens étaient les premiers d'entre les Israélites à leur demander la paix;
14 for they said, "A priest of the line of Aaron has come with the army, and he will not do us any wrong."	14 ils disaient: "C'est un prêtre de la race d'Aaron qui est venu avec les troupes: il ne nous ferapas de mal."
15 He spoke with them peacefully and swore to them, "We will not try to injure you or your friends."	15 Il leur tint des discours pacifiques et leur assura sous serment: "Nous ne chercherons à vousfaire aucun mal, pas plus qu'à vos amis."
16 So they trusted him. But he arrested sixty of them and killed them in one day, according to the text of Scripture:	16 Ils le crurent, et cependant il fit arrêter 60 d'entre eux, qu'il exécuta le même jour, suivant laparole de l'Ecriture:
17 "The flesh of your saints they have strewn, and their blood they have shed round about Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them."	17 Ils ont dispersé la chair de tes saints et répandu leur sang autour de Jérusalem, et il n'y avaitpersonne qui les ensevelît.
18 Then fear and dread of them came upon all the people, who said: "There is no truth or justice among them; they violated the agreement and the oath that they swore."	18 Alors la crainte et la terreur s'emparèrent de tout le peuple: "Il n'y a chez eux, disait-on, nivérité ni justice, car ils ont violé leur engagement et le serment qu'ils avaient fait."
19 Bacchides withdrew from Jerusalem and pitched his camp in Beth-zaith. He had many of the men arrested who deserted to him, throwing them into the great pit.	19 Bacchidès partit de Jérusalem et vint camper à Bethzeth, d'où il envoya arrêter nombre depersonnages qui avaient passé de son côté avec quelques-uns du peuple; il les égorgea et les jeta dans le grandpuits.
20 He handed the province over to Alcimus, leaving troops to help him, while he himself returned to the king.	20 Il remit ensuite la province à Alkime, laissant avec lui une armée pour le soutenir.Bacchidès s'en revint chez le roi.
21 Alcimus spared no pains to maintain his high priesthood,	21 Alkime soutint la lutte pour la dignité de grand prêtre.
22 and all those who were disturbing their people gathered about him. They took possession of the land of Judah and caused great distress in Israel.	22 Tous ceux qui troublaient le peuple se groupèrent autour de lui, se rendirent maîtres du paysde Juda et firent beaucoup de mal en Israël.
23 When Judas saw all the evils that Alcimus and his men were bringing upon the Israelites, more than even the Gentiles had done,	23 Voyant que toute la malfaisance d'Alkime et de ses partisans contre les Israélites surpassaitcelle des nations,
24 he went about all the borders of Judea and took revenge on the men who had deserted, preventing them from going out into the country.	24 Judas parcourut à la ronde tout le territoire de la Judée pour tirer vengeance des transfuges etles empêcher de circuler à travers la contrée.
25 But when Alcimus saw that Judas and his followers were gaining strength and realized that he could not oppose them, he returned to the king and accused them of grave crimes.	25 Lorsqu'il vit que Judas et ses partisans étaient devenus plus forts et qu'il se reconnutimpuissant à leur résister, Alkime retourna chez le roi et les accusa des pires méfaits.
26 Then the king sent Nicanor, one of his famous officers, who was a bitter enemy of Israel, with orders to destroy the people.	26 Le roi envoya Nikanor, un de ses généraux du rang des illustres, haineux et hostile à l'égardd'Israël, avec mission d'exterminer le peuple.
27 Nicanor came to Jerusalem with a large force and deceitfully sent to Judas and his brothers this peaceable message:	27 Arrivé à Jérusalem avec une armée nombreuse, Nikanor fit adresser à Judas et à ses frèresdes propositions pacifiques insidieuses ainsi conçues:
28 "Let there be no fight between me and you. I will come with a few men to meet you peaceably."	28 "Qu'il n'y ait pas de guerre entre vous et moi; je viendrai avec une faible escorte pour vousrencontrer en paix."
29 So he came to Judas, and they greeted one another peaceably. But Judas' enemies were prepared to seize him.	29 Il arriva chez Judas et ils se saluèrent l'un l'autre pacifiquement, mais les ennemis étaientprêts à enlever Judas.
30 When he became aware that Nicanor had come to him with treachery in mind, Judas was afraid and would not meet him again.	30 S'apercevant qu'il était venu chez lui avec des intentions perfides, Judas eut peur de lui et nevoulut plus le voir.
31 When Nicanor saw that his plan had been discovered, he went out to fight Judas near Capharsalama.	31 Nikanor reconnut alors que son dessein était découvert, et marcha contre Judas pour lecombattre près de Chapharsalama.
32 About five hundred men of Nicanor's army fell; the rest fled to the City of David.	32 Du côté de Nikanor, 500 hommes environ succombèrent et les autres s'enfuirent dans la Citéde David.
33 After this, Nicanor went up to Mount Zion. Some of the priests from the sanctuary and some of the elders of the people came out to greet him peaceably and to show him the holocaust that was being offered for the king.	33 Après ces événements, Nikanor monta au mont Sion. Des prêtres sortirent du lieu saint avecdes anciens du peuple pour le saluer pacifiquement et lui montrer l'holocauste qui s'offrait pour le roi.
34 But he mocked and ridiculed them, defiled them, and spoke disdainfully.	34 Mais lui se moqua d'eux, les tourna en dérision, les souilla et se répandit en parolesinsolentes.
35 In a rage he swore: "If Judas and his army are not delivered to me at once, when I return victorious I will burn this temple down." He went away in great anger.	35 Dans un accès de colère, il proféra ce serment: "Si Judas n'est pas cette fois livré entre mesmains avec son armée, dès que je serai revenu, la paix rétablie, je brûlerai cet édifice!" Il sortit furieux.
36 The priests, however, went in and stood before the altar and the sanctuary. They wept and said:	36 Les prêtres rentrèrent et, s'arrêtant devant l'autel et le Temple, ils dirent avec larmes:
37 "You have chosen this house to bear your name, to be a house of prayer and petition for your people.	37 C'est toi qui as choisi cette Maison pour qu'elle porte ton nom afin qu'elle fût pour tonpeuple une demeure de prière et de supplication;
38 Take revenge on this man and his army, and let them fall by the sword. Remember their blasphemies, and do not let them continue."	38 exerce ta vengeance sur cet homme et sur son armée, qu'ils tombent sous l'épée! Souviens-toi de leurs blasphèmes et ne leur accorde pas de relâche!"
39 Nicanor left Jerusalem and pitched his camp at Beth-horon, where the Syrian army joined him.	39 Nikanor quittant Jérusalem alla camper à Bethorôn où vint le rejoindre une armée de Syrie.
40 But Judas camped in Adasa with three thousand men. Here Judas uttered this prayer:	40 Judas, de son côté, campa en Adasa avec 3.000 hommes. Il fit alors cette prière:
41 "When they who were sent by the king blasphemed, your angel went out and killed a hundred and eighty-five thousand of them.	41 "Lorsque les messagers du roi eurent blasphémé, ton ange sortit et frappa 185.000 des siens.
42 In the same way, crush this army before us today, and let the rest know that Nicanor spoke wickedly against your sanctuary; judge him according to his wickedness."	42 Ecrase de même aujourd'hui en notre présence cette armée, afin que tous les autres sachentqu'il a tenu un langage impie contre ton sanctuaire, et juge-le selon sa méchanceté!"
43 The armies met in battle on the thirteenth day of the month Adar. Nicanor's army was crushed, and he himself was the first to fall in the battle.	43 Les armées se livrèrent bataille le treize du mois de Adar, celle de Nikanor fut écrasée et lui-même tué le premier dans le combat.
44 When his army saw that Nicanor was dead, they threw down their arms and fled.	44 Quand ils le virent tomber, les soldats de Nikanor jetèrent leurs armes et prirent la fuite.
45 The Jews pursued them a day's journey, from Adasa to near Gazara, blowing the trumpets behind them as signals.	45 Les Juifs les poursuivirent une journée de chemin, depuis Adasa jusqu'aux abords deGazara, sonnant derrière eux les trompettes en fanfare.
46 From all the surrounding villages of Judea people came out and closed in on them. They hemmed them in, and all the enemies fell by the sword; not a single one escaped.	46 De tous les villages judéens à la ronde on sortait pour encercler les fuyards qui seretournaient les uns sur les autres. Tous tombèrent par l'épée et pas un seul n'en réchappa.
47 Then the Jews collected the spoils and the booty; they cut off Nicanor's head and his right arm, which he had lifted up so arrogantly. These they brought to Jerusalem and displayed there.	47 Les dépouilles et le butin ramassés, on coupa la tête de Nikanor et la main droite qu'il avaitinsolemment dressée; elles furent apportées et dressées en vue de Jérusalem.
48 The people rejoiced greatly, and observed that day as a great festival.	48 Le peuple fut rempli de joie et fêta ce jour-là comme une grande journée d'allégresse.
49 They decreed that it should be observed every year on the thirteenth of Adar.	49 On décréta que ce jour serait célébré chaque année le treize Adar.
50 And for a short time the land of Judah was quiet.	50 Le pays de Juda fut en repos pendant un peu de temps.
