1 In the year one hundred and fifty-one, Demetrius, son of Seleucus, set out from Rome, arrived with a few men in a city on the seacoast, and began to rule there.	1 El año 151, Demetrio, hijo de Seleuco, salió de Roma y, con unos pocos hombres, arribó a una ciudad marítima donde se proclamó rey.
2 As he was preparing to enter the royal palace of his ancestors, the soldiers seized Antiochus and Lysias to bring them to him.	2 Cuando se disponía a entrar en la residencia real de sus padres, el ejército apresó a Antíoco y a Lisias para llevarlos a su presencia.
3 When he was informed of this, he said, "Do not show me their faces."	3 Al saberlo, dijo: «No quiero ver sus caras».
4 So the soldiers killed them, and Demetrius sat on the royal throne.	4 El ejército los mató y Demetrio se sentó en su trono real.
5 Then all the lawless and impious men of Israel came to him. They were led by Alcimus, who desired to be high priest.	5 Entonces todos los hombres sin ley e impíos de Israel acudieron a él, con Alcimo al frente, que pretendía el sumo sacerdocio.
6 They made this accusation to the king against the people: "Judas and his brothers have destroyed all your friends and have driven us out of our country.	6 Ya en su presencia, acusaron al pueblo diciendo: «Judas y sus hermanos han hecho perecer a todos tus amigos y a nosotros nos han expulsado de nuestro país.
7 So now, send a man whom you trust to go and see all the havoc Judas has done to us and to the king's land, and let him punish them and all their supporters."	7 Envía, pues, ahora una persona de tu confianza, que vaya y vea los estragos que en nosotros y en la provincia del rey han causado, y los castigue a ellos y a todos los que les apoyan».
8 Then the king chose Bacchides, one of the King's Friends, governor of West-of-Euphrates, a great man in the kingdom, and faithful to the king.	8 El rey eligió a Báquides, uno de los amigos del rey, gobernador de Transeufratina, grande en el reino y fiel al rey.
9 He sent him and the impious Alcimus, to whom he granted the high priesthood, with orders to take revenge on the Israelites.	9 Le envió con el impío Alcimo, a quien concedió el sacerdocio, a tomar venganza de los israelitas.
10 They set out and, on arriving in the land of Judah with a great army, sent messengers who spoke deceitfully to Judas and his brothers in peaceful terms.	10 Partieron con un ejército numeroso y en llegando a la tierra de Judá, enviaron mensajeros a Judas y sus hermanos con falsas proposiciones de paz.
11 But these paid no attention to their words, seeing that they had come with a great army.	11 Pero éstos no hicieron caso de sus palabras, porque vieron que habían venido con un ejército numeroso.
12 A group of scribes, however, gathered about Alcimus and Bacchides to ask for a just agreement.	12 No obstante, un grupo de escribas se reunió con Alcimo y Báquides, tratando de encontrar una solución justa.
13 The Hasideans were the first among the Israelites to seek peace with them,	13 Los asideos eran los primeros entre los israelitas en pedirles la paz,
14 for they said, "A priest of the line of Aaron has come with the army, and he will not do us any wrong."	14 pues decían: «Un sacerdote del linaje de Aarón ha venido con el ejército: no nos hará ningún mal».
15 He spoke with them peacefully and swore to them, "We will not try to injure you or your friends."	15 Habló con ellos amistosamente y les aseguró bajo juramento: «No intentaremos haceros mal ni a vosotros ni a vuestros amigos».
16 So they trusted him. But he arrested sixty of them and killed them in one day, according to the text of Scripture:	16 Le creyeron, pero él prendió a sesenta de ellos y les hizo morir en un mismo día, según la palabra que estaba escrita:
17 "The flesh of your saints they have strewn, and their blood they have shed round about Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them."	17 «Esparcieron la carne y la sangre de tus santos en torno a Jerusalén y no hubo quien les diese sepultura».
18 Then fear and dread of them came upon all the people, who said: "There is no truth or justice among them; they violated the agreement and the oath that they swore."	18 Con esto, el miedo hacia ellos y el espanto se apoderó del pueblo, que decía: «No hay en ellos verdad ni justicia, pues han violado el pacto y el juramento que habían jurado».
19 Bacchides withdrew from Jerusalem and pitched his camp in Beth-zaith. He had many of the men arrested who deserted to him, throwing them into the great pit.	19 Báquides partió de Jerusalén y acampó en Bet Zet. De allí mandó a prender a muchos que habían desertado donde él y a algunos del pueblo, los mató y los arrojó en el pozo grande.
20 He handed the province over to Alcimus, leaving troops to help him, while he himself returned to the king.	20 Luego puso la provincia en manos de Alcimo, dejó con él tropas que le sostuvieran y se marchó adonde el rey.
21 Alcimus spared no pains to maintain his high priesthood,	21 Alcimo luchó por el sumo sacerdocio.
22 and all those who were disturbing their people gathered about him. They took possession of the land of Judah and caused great distress in Israel.	22 Se le unieron todos los perturbadores del pueblo, se hicieron dueños de la tierra de Judá y causaron graves males a Israel.
23 When Judas saw all the evils that Alcimus and his men were bringing upon the Israelites, more than even the Gentiles had done,	23 Viendo Judas todo el daño que Alcimo y los suyos hacían a los hijos de Israel, mayor que el que habían causado los gentiles,
24 he went about all the borders of Judea and took revenge on the men who had deserted, preventing them from going out into the country.	24 salió a recorrer todo el territorio de Judea para tomar venganza de los desertores y no dejarles andar por la región.
25 But when Alcimus saw that Judas and his followers were gaining strength and realized that he could not oppose them, he returned to the king and accused them of grave crimes.	25 Al ver Alcimo que Judas y los suyos cobraban fuerza y que él no podía resistirles, se volvió donde el rey y les acusó de graves delitos.
26 Then the king sent Nicanor, one of his famous officers, who was a bitter enemy of Israel, with orders to destroy the people.	26 El rey envió a Nicanor, uno de sus generales más distinguidos y enemigo declarado de Israel, y le mandó exterminar al pueblo.
27 Nicanor came to Jerusalem with a large force and deceitfully sent to Judas and his brothers this peaceable message:	27 Nicanor llegó a Jerusalén con un ejército numeroso y envió a Judas y sus hermanos un insidioso mensaje de paz diciéndoles:
28 "Let there be no fight between me and you. I will come with a few men to meet you peaceably."	28 «No haya lucha entre vosotros y yo; iré a veros amistosamente con una pequeña escolta».
29 So he came to Judas, and they greeted one another peaceably. But Judas' enemies were prepared to seize him.	29 Fue pues, donde Judas y ambos se saludaron amistosamente, pero los enemigos estaban preparados para raptar a Judas.
30 When he became aware that Nicanor had come to him with treachery in mind, Judas was afraid and would not meet him again.	30 Al conocer que había venido a él con engaños, se atemorizó Judas y no quiso verle más.
31 When Nicanor saw that his plan had been discovered, he went out to fight Judas near Capharsalama.	31 Viendo descubiertos sus planes, Nicanor salió a enfrentarse con Judas cerca de Cafarsalamá.
32 About five hundred men of Nicanor's army fell; the rest fled to the City of David.	32 Cayeron unos quinientos hombres del ejército de Nicanor y los demás huyeron a la Ciudad de David.
33 After this, Nicanor went up to Mount Zion. Some of the priests from the sanctuary and some of the elders of the people came out to greet him peaceably and to show him the holocaust that was being offered for the king.	33 Después de estos sucesos, subió Nicanor al monte Sión. Salieron del Lugar Santo sacerdotes y ancianos del pueblo para saludarle amistosamente y mostrarle el holocausto que se ofrecía por el rey.
34 But he mocked and ridiculed them, defiled them, and spoke disdainfully.	34 Pero él se burló de ellos, les escarneció, les mancilló y habló insolentemente.
35 In a rage he swore: "If Judas and his army are not delivered to me at once, when I return victorious I will burn this temple down." He went away in great anger.	35 Colérico, les dijo con juramento: «Si esta vez no se me entrega Judas y su ejército en mis manos, cuando vuelva, hecha la paz, prenderé fuego a esta Casa». Y salió lleno de furor.
36 The priests, however, went in and stood before the altar and the sanctuary. They wept and said:	36 Entraron los sacerdotes y, de pie ante el altar y el santuario, exclamaron llorando:
37 "You have chosen this house to bear your name, to be a house of prayer and petition for your people.	37 «Tú has elegido esta Casa para que en ella fuese invocado tu nombre y fuese casa de oración y súplica para tu pueblo;
38 Take revenge on this man and his army, and let them fall by the sword. Remember their blasphemies, and do not let them continue."	38 toma vengaza de este hombre y de su ejército y caigan bajo la espada. Acuérdate, de sus blasfemias y no les des tregua».
39 Nicanor left Jerusalem and pitched his camp at Beth-horon, where the Syrian army joined him.	39 Nicanor partió de Jerusalén y acampó en Bet Jorón, donde se le unió un contingente de Siria.
40 But Judas camped in Adasa with three thousand men. Here Judas uttered this prayer:	40 Judas acampó en Adasá con 3.000 hombres y oró diciendo:
41 "When they who were sent by the king blasphemed, your angel went out and killed a hundred and eighty-five thousand of them.	41 «Cuando los enviados del rey blasfemaron, salió tu ángel y mató a 185.000 de ellos;
42 In the same way, crush this army before us today, and let the rest know that Nicanor spoke wickedly against your sanctuary; judge him according to his wickedness."	42 destruye también hoy este ejército ante nosotros y reconozcan los que queden que su jefe profirió palabras impías contra tu Lugar Santo; júzgale según su maldad».
43 The armies met in battle on the thirteenth day of the month Adar. Nicanor's army was crushed, and he himself was the first to fall in the battle.	43 El día trece del mes de Adar trabaron batalla los ejércitos y salió derrotado el de Nicanor. Nicanor cayó el primero en el combate,
44 When his army saw that Nicanor was dead, they threw down their arms and fled.	44 y su ejército, al verle caído, arrojó las armas y se dio a la fuga.
45 The Jews pursued them a day's journey, from Adasa to near Gazara, blowing the trumpets behind them as signals.	45 Les estuvieron persiguiendo un día entero, desde Adasá hasta llegar a Gázara, dando aviso tras ellos con el sonido de las trompetas.
46 From all the surrounding villages of Judea people came out and closed in on them. They hemmed them in, and all the enemies fell by the sword; not a single one escaped.	46 Salió gente de todos los pueblos judíos del contorno y, envolviéndoles, les obligaron a volverse los unos sobre los otros. Todos cayeron a espada; no quedó ni uno de ellos.
47 Then the Jews collected the spoils and the booty; they cut off Nicanor's head and his right arm, which he had lifted up so arrogantly. These they brought to Jerusalem and displayed there.	47 Tomaron los despojos y el botín; cortaron la cabeza de Nicanor y su mano derecha, aquella que había extendido insolentemente, y las llevaron para exponerlas a la vista de Jerusalén.
48 The people rejoiced greatly, and observed that day as a great festival.	48 El pueblo se llenó de gran alegría; celebraron aquel día como un gran día de regocijo
49 They decreed that it should be observed every year on the thirteenth of Adar.	49 y acordaron conmemorarlo cada año el trece de Adar.
50 And for a short time the land of Judah was quiet.	50 El país de Judá gozó de sosiego por algún tiempo.
