1 John then went up from Gazara and told his father Simon what Cendebeus was doing.	1 Jean monta de Gazara et avertit Simon son père de ce que Kendébée était en traind'accomplir.
2 Simon called his two oldest sons, Judas and John, and said to them: "I and my brothers and my father's house have fought the battles of Israel from our youth until today, and many times we succeeded in saving Israel.	2 Simon appela alors ses deux fils les plus âgés, Judas et Jean, et leur dit: "Mes frères et moi,et la maison de mon père, nous avons combattu les ennemis d'Israël depuis notre jeunesse jusqu'à ce jour, et nosmains ont réussi à sauver Israël maintes fois.
3 I have now grown old, but you, by the mercy of Heaven, have come to man's estate. Take my place and my brother's, and go out and fight for our nation; and may the help of Heaven be with you!"	3 Maintenant je suis vieux, tandis que vous, par la miséricorde du ciel, vous êtes d'un âgesuffisant: prenez ma place et celle de mon frère et partez combattre pour notre nation, et que le secours du Cielsoit avec vous."
4 John then mustered in the land twenty thousand warriors and horsemen. Setting out against Cendebeus, they spent the night at Modein,	4 Puis il choisit dans le pays 20.000 combattants et des cavaliers qui marchèrent sur Kendébéeet passèrent la nuit à Modîn.
5 rose early, and marched into the plain. 6 John and his men took their position against the enemy. Seeing that his men were afraid to cross the stream, John crossed first. 7 Then he divided his infantry into two corps and put his cavalry between them, for the enemy's horsemen were very numerous.	7 Il divisa la troupe (en deux corps) avec les cavaliers au milieu des fantassins, car la cavaleriedes adversaires était fort nombreuse.
8 They blew the trumpets, and Cendebeus and his army were put to flight; many of them fell wounded, and the rest fled toward the stronghold.	8 Les trompettes retentirent et Kendébée fut mis en fuite avec son armée; beaucoup tombèrentfrappés à mort; ceux qui échappèrent s'enfuirent vers la forteresse.
9 It was then that John's brother Judas fell wounded; but John pursued them until Cendebeus reached Kedron, which he had fortified.	9 C'est alors que fut blessé Judas, le frère de Jean. Quant à Jean, il les poursuivit jusqu'à ceque Kendébée arrivât à Kédrôn qu'il avait rebâtie.
10 Some took refuge in the towers on the plain of Azotus, but John set fire to these, and about two thousand of the enemy perished. He then returned to Judea in peace.	10 Ils s'enfuirent jusqu'aux tours qui sont dans les champs d'Azôtos, que Jean incendia. 2.000d'entre eux succombèrent et il retourna en paix dans la Judée.
11 Ptolemy, son of Abubus, had been appointed governor of the plain of Jericho, and he had much silver and gold,	11 Ptolémée fils d'Aboubos avait été établi stratège de la plaine de Jéricho, il possédaitbeaucoup d'or et d'argent,
12 being the son-in-law of the high priest.	12 car il était le gendre du grand prêtre.
13 But he became ambitious and sought to get control of the country. So he made treacherous plans to do away with Simon and his sons.	13 Son coeur s'enorgueillit; il aspira à se rendre maître du pays et formait des desseinsperfides contre Simon et ses fils pour les supprimer.
14 As Simon was inspecting the cities of the country and providing for their needs, he and his sons Mattathias and Judas went down to Jericho in the year one hundred and seventy-seven, in the eleventh month (that is, the month Shebat).	14 Or Simon faisait une tournée d'inspection dans les villes du pays, soucieux de ce quiregardait leur administration. Il descendit à Jéricho, lui et ses fils Mattathias et Judas, l'année 177, au onzièmemois qui est le mois de Shebat.
15 The son of Abubus gave them a deceitful welcome in the little stronghold called Dok which he had built. While serving them a sumptuous banquet, he had his men hidden there.	15 Le fils d'Aboubos les reçut par ruse dans une petite forteresse, nommée Dôk, qu'il avaitbâtie. Il leur servit un grand banquet et cacha des hommes (dans le fortin).
16 Then, when Simon and his sons had drunk freely, Ptolemy and his men sprang up, weapons in hand, rushed upon Simon in the banquet hall, and killed him, his two sons, and some of his servants.	16 Lorsque Simon fut ivre ainsi que ses fils, Ptolémée se leva avec ses hommes et, prenantleurs armes, ils se précipitèrent sur Simon dans la salle du festin et le tuèrent avec ses deux fils et quelques-unsde ses serviteurs.
17 By this vicious act of treason he repaid good with evil.	17 Il commit ainsi une grande perfidie et rendit le mal pour le bien.
18 Then Ptolemy wrote an account of this and sent it to the king, asking that troops be sent to help him and that the country be turned over to him.	18 Ptolémée en écrivit un rapport qu'il adressa au roi, afin de se faire envoyer des troupes desecours et de lui livrer les villes et la province.
19 He sent other men to Gazara to do away with John. To the army officers he sent letters inviting them to come to him so that he might present them with silver, gold, and gifts.	19 Il envoya d'autres émissaires à Gazara pour supprimer Jean, et manda par lettre auxchiliarques de venir auprès de lui pour qu'il leur donnât de l'argent, de l'or et des présents.
20 He also sent others to seize Jerusalem and the mount of the temple.	20 Il en dépêcha d'autres pour prendre possession de Jérusalem et de la montagne dusanctuaire.
21 But someone ran ahead and brought word to John at Gazara that his father and his brothers had perished, and that Ptolemy had sent men to kill him also.	21 Mais quelqu'un, ayant pris les devants, avait annoncé à Jean, à Gazara, que son père et sesfrères avaient péri, et il dit: "Il a envoyé quelqu'un pour te tuer toi aussi."
22 On hearing this, John was utterly astounded. When the men came to kill him, he had them arrested and put to death, for he knew what they meant to do.	22 A cette nouvelle, Jean fut tout bouleversé; il arrêta les hommes venus pour le tuer et les mità mort, car il savait qu'ils cherchaient à le perdre.
23 Now the rest of the history of John, his wars and the brave deeds he performed, his rebuilding of the walls, and his other achievements-	23 Quant au reste des actions de Jean, ses combats et les exploits qu'il accomplit, les rempartsqu'il construisit et ses autres entreprises,
24 these things are recorded in the chronicle of his pontificate, from the time that he succeeded his father as high priest.	24 cela est écrit dans le livre des Annales de son pontificat depuis le jour où il devint grandprêtre après son père.
