1 John then went up from Gazara and told his father Simon what Cendebeus was doing.	1 Allora Giovanni salì da Ghezer e riferì a Simone suo padre quanto faceva Cendebèo.
2 Simon called his two oldest sons, Judas and John, and said to them: "I and my brothers and my father's house have fought the battles of Israel from our youth until today, and many times we succeeded in saving Israel.	2 Simone chiamò i suoi due figli maggiori Giuda e Giovanni e disse loro: "Io e i miei fratelli e la casa di mio padre abbiamo combattuto le battaglie d'Israele dalla gioventù fino ad oggi e riuscì nelle nostre mani l'impresa di salvare Israele ripetutamente;
3 I have now grown old, but you, by the mercy of Heaven, have come to man's estate. Take my place and my brother's, and go out and fight for our nation; and may the help of Heaven be with you!"	3 ora io sono vecchio e voi, per misericordia del Cielo, siete nell'età buona; prendete il posto mio e di mio fratello e fatevi avanti a combattere per il vostro popolo; l'aiuto del Cielo sia con voi".
4 John then mustered in the land twenty thousand warriors and horsemen. Setting out against Cendebeus, they spent the night at Modein,	4 Giovanni arruolò nella regione ventimila uomini esperti nelle armi e cavalieri; partirono contro Cendebèo e passarono la notte in Modin.
5 rose early, and marched into the plain. There, facing them, was an immense army of foot soldiers and horsemen, and between the two armies was a stream.	5 Alzatisi il mattino, proseguirono per la pianura ed ecco venire incontro a loro un esercito ingente, fanti e cavalleria; ma un torrente li separava.
6 John and his men took their position against the enemy. Seeing that his men were afraid to cross the stream, John crossed first. When his men saw this, they crossed over after him.	6 Giovanni con la sua gente pose il campo di fronte. Vedendo che il grosso esitava ad attraversare il torrente, passò per primo. Lo videro i suoi uomini e passarono dopo di lui.
7 Then he divided his infantry into two corps and put his cavalry between them, for the enemy's horsemen were very numerous.	7 Egli divise la moltitudine e pose i cavalieri in mezzo ai fanti, perché la cavalleria degli avversari era molto numerosa.
8 They blew the trumpets, and Cendebeus and his army were put to flight; many of them fell wounded, and the rest fled toward the stronghold.	8 Poi diedero fiato alle trombe: Cendebèo e il suo schieramento furono respinti; molti della loro parte caddero colpiti a morte e i superstiti si rifugiarono nella fortezza.
9 It was then that John's brother Judas fell wounded; but John pursued them until Cendebeus reached Kedron, which he had fortified.	9 Fu ferito allora anche Giuda, fratello di Giovanni. Giovanni invece li inseguì, finché giunse a Cedron che Cendebèo aveva ricostruito.
10 Some took refuge in the towers on the plain of Azotus, but John set fire to these, and about two thousand of the enemy perished. He then returned to Judea in peace.	10 I nemici fuggirono nelle torri esistenti nelle campagne di Asdòd, ma egli vi appiccò il fuoco. Restarono sul campo circa duemila nemici. Poi Giovanni ritornò in Giudea senza molestie.
11 Ptolemy, son of Abubus, had been appointed governor of the plain of Jericho, and he had much silver and gold,	11 Tolomeo, figlio di Abùbo, era stato costituito stratega della pianura di Gèrico. Egli possedeva molto argento e oro,
12 being the son-in-law of the high priest.	12 poiché era il genero del sommo sacerdote.
13 But he became ambitious and sought to get control of the country. So he made treacherous plans to do away with Simon and his sons.	13 Il suo cuore si inorgoglì e si propose di impadronirsi del paese e covava perfidi disegni contro Simone e i suoi figli per eliminarli.
14 As Simon was inspecting the cities of the country and providing for their needs, he and his sons Mattathias and Judas went down to Jericho in the year one hundred and seventy-seven, in the eleventh month (that is, the month Shebat).	14 Simone era in visita alle città della regione e si interessava delle loro necessità. Venne allora in Gèrico insieme con Mattatia e Giuda suoi figli, nell'anno centosettantasette, nell'undicesimo mese, cioè il mese di Sabat.
15 The son of Abubus gave them a deceitful welcome in the little stronghold called Dok which he had built. While serving them a sumptuous banquet, he had his men hidden there.	15 Il figlio di Abùbo, che covava il tradimento, li ricevette nella cittadella, chiamata Dok, che egli aveva costruita, e servì loro un gran banchetto, nascondendo ivi degli armati.
16 Then, when Simon and his sons had drunk freely, Ptolemy and his men sprang up, weapons in hand, rushed upon Simon in the banquet hall, and killed him, his two sons, and some of his servants.	16 Quando Simone e i figli furono inebriati, Tolomeo e i suoi uomini si alzarono, impugnarono le armi, si scagliarono contro Simone nella sala del banchetto e trucidarono lui, i due figli e alcuni suoi servi.
17 By this vicious act of treason he repaid good with evil.	17 Egli commise un'enorme perfidia e rese male per bene.
18 Then Ptolemy wrote an account of this and sent it to the king, asking that troops be sent to help him and that the country be turned over to him.	18 Tolomeo scrisse di questa cosa e spedì al re, perché gli inviasse milizie in aiuto e gli desse in consegna la loro regione e le città.
19 He sent other men to Gazara to do away with John. To the army officers he sent letters inviting them to come to him so that he might present them with silver, gold, and gifts.	19 Inviò altri uomini a Ghezer per eliminare Giovanni e spedì lettere ai suoi comandanti, che venissero da lui, perché doveva loro argento e oro e doni;
20 He also sent others to seize Jerusalem and the mount of the temple.	20 altri uomini inviò ad occupare Gerusalemme e il monte del tempio.
21 But someone ran ahead and brought word to John at Gazara that his father and his brothers had perished, and that Ptolemy had sent men to kill him also.	21 Ma qualcuno corse avanti e informò Giovanni che suo padre e i suoi fratelli erano periti, aggiungendo: "Ha inviato uomini per uccidere anche te".
22 On hearing this, John was utterly astounded. When the men came to kill him, he had them arrested and put to death, for he knew what they meant to do.	22 Udendo ciò, Giovanni rimase profondamente costernato; poi catturò gli uomini inviati per sopprimerlo e li mise a morte. Aveva infatti saputo che cercavano di ucciderlo.
23 Now the rest of the history of John, his wars and the brave deeds he performed, his rebuilding of the walls, and his other achievements-	23 Le altre azioni di Giovanni, le sue battaglie e gli atti di valore da lui compiuti, la ricostruzione delle mura da lui eseguita e le sue imprese, ecco stanno scritte negli annali del suo sommo sacerdozio, da quando divenne sommo sacerdote dopo la morte di suo padre.
24 these things are recorded in the chronicle of his pontificate, from the time that he succeeded his father as high priest.
