Exodus 13

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 The LORD spoke to Moses and said,	1 Yahvé parla à Moïse et lui dit:
2 "Consecrate to me every first-born that opens the womb among the Israelites, both of man and beast, for it belongs to me."	2 "Consacre-moi tout premier-né, prémices du sein maternel, parmi les Israélites. Homme ou animal,il est à moi."
3 Moses said to the people, "Remember this day on which you came out of Egypt, that place of slavery. It was with a strong hand that the LORD brought you away. Nothing made with leaven must be eaten.	3 Moïse dit au peuple: "Souvenez-vous de ce jour, celui où vous êtes sortis d'Egypte, de la maison deservitude, car c'est par la force de sa main que Yahvé vous en a fait sortir, et l'on ne mangera pas de pain levé.
4 This day of your departure is in the month of Abib.	4 Aujourd'hui vous sortez dans le mois d'Abib.
5 Therefore, it is in this month that you must celebrate this rite, after the LORD, your God, has brought you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites and Jebusites, which he swore to your fathers he would give you, a land flowing with milk and honey.	5 Quand Yahvé t'aura fait entrer dans la terre des Cananéens, des Hittites, des Amorites, des Hivviteset des Jébuséens, qu'il a juré à tes pères de te donner, terre qui ruisselle de lait et de miel, tu pratiqueras ce rite ence même mois.
6 For seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and the seventh day shall also be a festival to the LORD.	6 Pendant sept jours tu mangeras des azymes et le septième jour il y aura une fête pour Yahvé.
7 Only unleavened bread may be eaten during the seven days; no leaven and nothing leavened may be found in all your territory.	7 Ce sont des azymes que l'on mangera pendant les sept jours et l'on ne verra pas chez toi de painlevé, ni on ne verra chez toi de levain, dans tout ton territoire.
8 On this day you shall explain to your son, 'This is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.'	8 Ce jour-là, tu parleras ainsi à ton fils: C'est à cause de ce que Yahvé a fait pour moi lors de ma sortied'Egypte.
9 It shall be as a sign on your hand and as a reminder on your forehead; thus the law of the LORD will ever be on your lips, because with a strong hand the LORD brought you out of Egypt.	9 Ce sera pour toi un signe sur ta main, un mémorial sur ton front, afin que la loi de Yahvé soittoujours dans ta bouche, car c'est à main forte que Yahvé t'a fait sortir d'Egypte.
10 Therefore, you shall keep this prescribed rite at its appointed time from year to year.	10 Tu observeras cette loi au temps prescrit, d'année en année.
11 "When the LORD, your God, has brought you into the land of the Canaanites, which he swore to you and your fathers he would give you,	11 "Quand Yahvé t'aura fait entrer dans le pays des Cananéens, comme il te l'a juré ainsi qu'à tespères, et qu'il te l'aura donné,
12 you shall dedicate to the LORD every son that opens the womb; and all the male firstlings of your animals shall belong to the LORD.	12 tu céderas à Yahvé tout être sorti le premier du sein maternel et toute la première portée des bêtesqui t'appartiennent: les mâles sont à Yahvé.
13 Every first-born of an ass you shall redeem with a sheep. If you do not redeem it, you shall break its neck. Every first-born son you must redeem.	13 Les premiers ânons mis bas, tu les rachèteras par une tête de petit bétail. Si tu ne les rachètes pas,tu leur briseras la nuque, mais tous les premiers-nés de l'homme, parmi tes fils, tu les rachèteras.
14 If your son should ask you later on, 'What does this mean?' you shall tell him, 'With a strong hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, that place of slavery.	14 Lorsque ton fils te demandera demain: Que signifie ceci? Tu lui diras: C'est par la force de sa mainque Yahvé nous a fait sortir d'Egypte, de la maison de servitude.
15 When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the LORD killed every first-born in the land of Egypt, every first-born of man and of beast. That is why I sacrifice to the LORD everything of the male sex that opens the womb, and why I redeem every first-born of my sons.'	15 Comme Pharaon s'entêtait à ne pas nous laisser partir, Yahvé fit périr tous les premiers-nés au paysd'Egypte, aussi bien les premiers-nés des hommes que les premiers-nés du bétail. C'est pourquoi je sacrifie àYahvé tout mâle sorti le premier du sein maternel et je rachète tout premier-né de mes fils.
16 Let this, then, be as a sign on your hand and as a pendant on your forehead: with a strong hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt."	16 Ce sera pour toi un signe sur ta main, un bandeau sur ton front, car c'est par la force de sa main queYahvé nous a fait sortir d'Egypte."
17 Now, when Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them by way of the Philistines' land, though this was the nearest; for he thought, should the people see that they would have to fight, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.	17 Lorsque Pharaon eut laissé partir le peuple, Dieu ne lui fit pas prendre la route du pays desPhilistins, bien qu'elle fût plus proche, car Dieu s'était dit qu'à la vue des combats le peuple pourrait se repentir etretourner en Egypte.
18 Instead, he rerouted them toward the Red Sea by way of the desert road. In battle array the Israelites marched out of Egypt.	18 Dieu fit donc faire au peuple un détour par la route du désert de la mer des Roseaux. C'est bienarmés que les Israélites montèrent du pays d'Egypte.
19 Moses also took Joseph's bones along, for Joseph had made the Israelites swear solemnly that, when God should come to them, they would carry his bones away with them.	19 Moïse emporta les ossements de Joseph avec lui, car celui-ci avait adjuré les Israélites en disant:"Oui, Dieu vous visitera, et alors vous emporterez d'ici mes ossements avec vous."
20 Setting out from Succoth, they camped at Etham near the edge of the desert.	20 Ils partirent de Sukkot et campèrent à Etam, en bordure du désert.
21 The LORD preceded them, in the daytime by means of a column of cloud to show them the way, and at night by means of a column of fire to give them light. Thus they could travel both day and night.	21 Yahvé marchait avec eux, le jour dans une colonne de nuée pour leur indiquer la route, et la nuitdans une colonne de feu pour les éclairer, afin qu'ils puissent marcher de jour et de nuit.
22 Neither the column of cloud by day nor the column of fire by night ever left its place in front of the people.	22 La colonne de nuée ne se retirait pas le jour devant le peuple, ni la colonne de feu la nuit.
