1 The following day Holofernes ordered his whole army, and all the allied troops that had come to his support, to move against Bethulia, seize the mountain passes, and engage the Israelites in battle.	1 Al día siguiente, Holofernes ordenó a todo su ejército y a toda la tropa de auxiliares que se habían unido a él, que emprendieran la marcha hacia Betulia, que ocuparan los desfiladeros de la montaña y atacaran a los israelitas.
2 That same day all their fighting men went into action. Their forces numbered a hundred and seventy thousand infantry and twelve thousand horsemen, not counting the baggage train or the men who accompanied it on foot-a very great army.	2 Y aquel mismo día, todos sus guerreros levantaron el campamento. Su ejército se componía de ciento setenta mil soldados de infantería, y de doce mil jinetes, sin contar los encargados del equipaje, y los hombres de a pie que los acompañaban: era una inmensa multitud.
3 They encamped at the spring in the valley near Bethulia, and spread out in breadth toward Dothan as far as Balbaim, and in length from Bethulia to Cyamon, which faces Esdraelon.	3 Acamparon en el valle cercano a Betulia, junto a la fuente, y se desplegaron a lo ancho, desde Dotaim hasta Belbaim, y a lo largo, desde Betulia hasta Ciamón, que está frente a Esdrelón.
4 When the Israelites saw how many there were, they said to one another in great dismay: "Soon they will devour the whole country. Neither the high mountains nor the valleys and hills can support the mass of them."	4 Al ver aquella multitud, los israelitas quedaron despavoridos y se decían unos a otros: «Estos van a arrasar ahora toda la superficie de la tierra; ni las más altas montañas, ni los barrancos, ni las colinas podrán soportar su peso».
5 Yet they all seized their weapons, lighted fires on their bastions, and kept watch throughout the night.	5 Entonces cada uno empuñó sus armas de guerra y montaron guardia toda aquella noche, encendiendo fogatas sobre las torres.
6 On the second day Holofernes led out all his cavalry in the sight of the Israelites who were in Bethulia.	6 Al segundo día, Holofernes exhibió toda su caballería delante de los israelitas que estaban en Betulia;
7 He reconnoitered the approaches to their city and located their sources of water; these he seized, stationing armed detachments around them, while he himself returned to his troops.	7 luego examinó los accesos de la ciudad; inspeccionó los manantiales y se apoderó de ellos, colocando allí puestos de guardia. Después volvió a reunirse con sus tropas.
8 All the commanders of the Edomites and all the leaders of the Ammonites, together with the generals of the seacoast, came to Holofernes and said:	8 Vinieron entonces a su encuentro los príncipes de los hijos de Esaú, todos los jefes del pueblo de Moab y los oficiales del litoral, y le dijeron:
9 "Sir, listen to what we have to say, that there may be no losses among your troops.	9 «Si nuestro señor se digna escuchar un consejo, no habrá bajas en su ejército.
10 These Israelites do not rely on their spears, but on the height of the mountains where they dwell; it is not easy to reach the summit of their mountains.	10 Este pueblo de los israelitas no confía en sus lanzas, sino en las alturas de las montañas donde habitan, porque no es fácil escalar las cimas de sus montañas.
11 Therefore, sir, do not attack them in regular formation; thus not a single one of your troops will fall.	11 Por eso, señor, no entres en combate con ellos y no caerá ni uno solo de tu pueblo.
12 Stay in your camp, and spare all your soldiers. Have some of your servants keep control of the source of water that flows out at the base of the mountain,	12 Quédate en tu campamento y reserva a todos los hombres de tu ejército; basta con que tus servidores se apoderen de la fuente que brota al pie de la montaña,
13 for that is where the inhabitants of Bethulia get their water. Then thirst will begin to carry them off, and they will surrender their city. Meanwhile, we and our men will go up to the summits of the nearby mountains, and encamp there to guard against anyone's leaving the city.	13 porque de ella sacan el agua todos los habitantes de Betulia; así, devorador por la sed, tendrán que entregar la ciudad. Mientras tanto, nosotros y nuestra gente escalaremos las cimas de las montañas vecinas y acamparemos allí, para impedir que alguien salga de la ciudad.
14 They and their wives and children will languish with hunger, and even before the sword strikes them they will be laid low in the streets of their city.	14 El hambre los consumirá a ellos, a sus mujeres y a sus niños, y antes que los alcance la espada caerán tendidos en las calles de la ciudad.
15 Thus you will render them dire punishment for their rebellion and their refusal to meet you peacefully."	15 Así les harás pagar bien caro su rebeldía y el haberse rehusado a salir pacíficamente a tu encuentro».
16 Their words pleased Holofernes and all his ministers, and he ordered their proposal to be carried out.	16 La propuesta satisfizo a Holofernes y a todos sus oficiales, y él decidió proceder de esa manera.
17 Thereupon the Moabites moved camp, together with five thousand Assyrians. They encamped in the valley, and held the water supply and the springs of the Israelites.	17 Un destacamento de amonitas partió acompañado de cinco mil asirios. Ellos acamparon en el valle, y se apoderaron de los depósitos de agua y de los manantiales de los israelitas.
18 The Edomites and the Ammonites went up and encamped in the mountain region opposite Dothan; and they sent some of their men to the south and to the east opposite Egrebel, near Chusi, which is on Wadi Mochmur. The rest of the Assyrian army was encamped in the plain, covering the whole countryside. Their enormous store of tents and equipment was spread out in profusion everywhere.	18 Entre tanto, los edomitas y los amonitas subieron para acampar en la colina situada frente a Dotaim y enviaron a algunos de ellos hacia el sur y hacia el este, frente a Egrebel, que está cerca de Cus, a orillas del torrente Mocmur. El resto del ejército asirio tomó posiciones en la llanura, cubriendo toda la superficie de la región. Sus tiendas de campaña y sus equipajes formaban un inmenso campamento, porque era una enorme multitud.
19 The Israelites cried to the Lord, their God, for they were disheartened, since all their enemies had them surrounded, and there was no way of slipping through their lines.	19 Al verse rodeados por todos sus enemigos, los israelitas invocaron al Señor, su Dios, porque se sentían anonadados y sin posibilidad de romper el cerco.
20 The whole Assyrian camp, infantry, chariots, and cavalry, kept them thus surrounded for thirty-four days. All the reservoirs of water failed the inhabitants of Bethulia,	20 Todo el ejército asirio –los soldados, los carros de guerra y los jinetes– mantuvieron el cerco durante treinta y cuatro días. A todos los habitantes de Betulia se les agotaron las reservas de agua
21 and the cisterns ran dry, so that on no day did they have enough to drink, but their drinking water was rationed.	21 y las cisternas comenzaron a secarse, de manera que nadie podía beber lo indispensable para cada día porque el agua se les distribuía racionada.
22 Their children fainted away, and the women and youths were consumed with thirst and were collapsing in the streets and gateways of the city, with no strength left in them.	22 Los niños languidecían, y las mujeres y los jóvenes desfallecían de sed y caían exhaustos en las plazas de la ciudad y en los umbrales de las puertas.
23 All the people, therefore, including youths, women, and children, went in a crowd to Uzziah and the rulers of the city. They set up a great clamor and said before the elders:	23 Todo el pueblo, los jóvenes, las mujeres y los niños se amotinaron contra Ozías y contra los jefes de la ciudad, y clamaban a gritos, diciendo a los ancianos:
24 "God judge between you and us! You have done us grave injustice in not making peace with the Assyrians.	24 «Que Dios sea el juez entre nosotros y ustedes, por la gran injusticia que cometen contra nosotros al no entrar en negociaciones de paz con los asirios.
25 There is no help for us now! Instead, God has sold us into their power by laying us prostrate before them in thirst and utter exhaustion.	25 Ya no hay nadie que pueda auxiliarnos, porque Dios nos ha puesto en manos de esa gente para que desfallezcamos de sed ante sus ojos y seamos totalmente destruidos.
26 Therefore, summon them and deliver the whole city as booty to the troops of Holofernes and to all his forces;	26 Llámenlos ahora mismo y entreguen la ciudad como botín a Holofernes y a todo su ejército,
27 we would be better off to become their prey. We should indeed be made slaves, but at least we should live, and not have to behold our little ones dying before our eyes and our wives and children breathing out their souls.	27 porque es preferible que seamos sus prisioneros: así seremos esclavos, pero salvaremos nuestra vida y no tendremos que contemplar con nuestros propios ojos la muerte de nuestros pequeños, y no veremos a nuestras mujeres y a nuestros hijos exhalar el último suspiro.
28 We adjure you by heaven and earth, and by our God, the Lord of our forefathers, who is punishing us for our sins and those of our forefathers, to do as we have proposed, this very day."	28 Los conjuramos por el cielo y por la tierra, y también por nuestro Dios y Señor de nuestros padres, que nos castiga por nuestros pecados y por las transgresiones de nuestros antepasados; hagan hoy mismo lo que les decimos».
29 All in the assembly with one accord broke into shrill wailing and loud cries to the Lord their God.	29 Y toda la asamblea prorrumpió en un amargo llanto, implorando a grandes voces al Señor Dios.
30 But Uzziah said to them, "Courage, my brothers! Let us wait five days more for the Lord our God, to show his mercy toward us; he will not utterly forsake us.	30 Pero Ozías les dijo: «Animo, hermanos, resistamos cinco días más. En el transcurso de ellos, el Señor, nuestro Dios, volverá a tener misericordia de nosotros, porque no nos abandonará hasta el fin.
31 But if those days pass without help coming to us, I will do as you say."	31 Si transcurridos estos días, no nos llega ningún auxilio, entonces obraré como ustedes dicen».
32 Then he dispersed the men to their posts, and they returned to the walls and towers of the city; the women and children he sent to their homes. Throughout the city they were in great misery.	32 Luego disolvió a la multitud para que cada uno regresara a su puesto: los hombres se dirigieron a los muros y a las torres de la ciudad, pero a las mujeres y a los niños los envió a sus casas. Mientras tanto, la ciudad quedó sumida en una profunda consternación.
