Nehemiah 6

1 When it had been reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and our other enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and that there was no breach left in it (though up to that time I had not yet set up the doors in the gates),	1 Ma avendo udito Sanaballath, e Tobia, e Gossem Arabo, e gli altri nostri nemici, com'io avea fabbricate le mura: e come non vi restava più apertura (non si eran però ancora messe le imposte alle porte;)
2 Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: "Come, let us hold council together at Caphirim in the plain of Ono." They were planning to do me harm.	2 Sanaballath, e Gossem mi mandarono a dire: Vieni, e facciamo alleanza, tra noi in qualcheduno de' villaggi della campagna di Ono: ma eglino pensavano a farmi del male.
3 However, I sent messengers to them with this reply: "I am engaged in a great enterprise and am unable to come down; why should the work stop, while I leave it to come down to you?"	3 Io pertanto mandai gente a dir loro: Ho per le mani un gran lavoro, e non posso venire, aftinché non resti trascurato, s' io parto per venire a voi.
4 Four times they sent me this same proposal, and each time I gave the same reply.	4 Ed ei mandarono per ben quattro volte a dirmi la stessa cosa: e io risposi loro, come da prima.
5 Then, the fifth time, Sanballat sent me the same message by one of his servants, who bore an unsealed letter	5 E Sanaballath mi mandò per lo stesso fine di prima la quinta volta un suo servo, che portava una lettera di questo tenore:
6 containing this text: "Among the nations it has been reported--Geshem is witness to this--that you and the Jews are planning a rebellion; that for this reason you are rebuilding the wall; and that you are to be their king"--and so on.	6 Si è divulgato tralle genti, e Gossem lo afferma, che tu, e i Giudei meditate ribellione, e per questo tu rialzi le mura, e vuoi farti loro re: e che a questo fine
7 "Also, that you have set up prophets in Jerusalem to proclaim you king of Judah. Now, since matters like these must reach the ear of the king, come, let us hold council together."	7 Tu hai pronti de' profeti, i quali ti vadano encomiando per Gerusalemme, e dicano: Egli è il re della Giudea. Queste cose il re le saprà: per questo vieni tosto, affinchè consultiamo insieme.
8 I sent him this answer: "Nothing of what you report has taken place; rather, it is the invention of your own mind."	8 Ma io gli mandai a dire: La cosa non istà, come tu dici: perocché tu crei in cuor tuo queste cose.
9 They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, "Their hands will slacken in the work, and it will never be completed." But instead, I now redoubled my efforts.	9 Conciossiachè tutti coloro ci mettevano degli spauracchi, sperando di ritrarci dal lavoro, e di farcelo abbandonare. Ma io per questo stesso mi animai maggiormente,
10 I went to the house of Shemaiah, son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, who was unable to go about, and he said: "Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple building; let us lock the doors of the temple. For men are coming to kill you; by night they are coming to kill you."	10 E andai di nascosto a casa di Semaia figliuolo di Dalai, figliuolo di Metabeel. Il quale disse: Andiamo a discorrerla tra di noi nella casa di Dio nel mezzo del tempio, e chiudiamo le porte: perocché coloro sono per venire a ucciderti, e verranno di notte per darti morte.
11 My answer was: "A man like me take flight? Can a man like me enter the temple to save his life? I will not go!"	11 Ma io dissi: Forse un uomo come me si dà alla fuga? e un uomo qual son io, potrà entrare nel tempio, e salvarsi? io non vi anderò.
12 For on consideration it was plain to me that God had not sent him; rather, because Tobiah and Sanballat had bribed him, he voiced this prophecy concerning me	12 E io compresi, ch'ei non era mandato da Dio, e mi avea parlato quasi fosse uomo ispirato, ma Tobia, e Sanaballath lo aveano comperato:
13 that I might act on it out of fear and commit this sin. Then they would have had a shameful story with which to discredit me.	13 Perocché egli era stato pagato per atterrirmi, e farmi peccare, onde quegli avesser ragione di rimproverarmi.
14 Keep in mind Tobiah and Sanballat, O my God, because of these things they did; keep in mind as well Noadiah the prophetess and the other prophets who were trying to frighten me.	14 Ricordati di me, o Signore, per riguardo ai raggiri di Tobia, e di Sanaballath, e anche di Noadia profeta, e degli altri profeti, i quali mi facevano paura.
15 The wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul; it had taken fifty-two days.	15 Or le mura furon condotte a fine ai venticinque del mese di Elul, in cinquantadue giorni.
16 When all our enemies had heard of this, and all the nations round about had taken note of it, our enemies lost much face in the eyes of the nations, for they knew that it was with our God's help that this work had been completed.	16 Or quando ebber saputo questo tutti i nostri nemici, s'intimorirono tutte le nazioni circonvicine, e si sbigottirono in cuor loro, conoscendo che questa era opera fatta da Dio.
17 At that same time, however, many letters were going to Tobiah from the nobles of Judah, and Tobiah's letters were reaching them,	17 E per quel tempo andavano, e venivano lettere molte de' magnati Giudei a Tobia, e di Tobia a quelli.
18 for many in Judah were in league with him, since he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah, son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam, son of Berechiah.	18 Perocché molti erano nella Giudea, che gli avean giurata amistà, perchè egli era genero di Sechenia figliuolo di Area, e Johanan suo figliuolo avea sposata la figliuola di Mosollam figliuolo di Barachia:
19 Thus they would praise his good deeds in my presence and relate to him whatever I said; and Tobiah sent letters trying to frighten me.	19 Ed ei ne facevano encomi in mia Presenza, e a lui riferivano quel, ch'io diceva. E Tobia scriveva lettere per atterrirmi.
