Nehemiah 6

1 When it had been reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and our other enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and that there was no breach left in it (though up to that time I had not yet set up the doors in the gates),	1 OR quando Samballat, e Tobia, e Ghesem Arabo, e gli altri nostri nemici, ebbero inteso che io avea riedificate le mura, e che non vi era restata alcuna rottura quantunque fino a quel tempo io non avessi poste le reggi alle porte,
2 Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: "Come, let us hold council together at Caphirim in the plain of Ono." They were planning to do me harm.	2 Sanballat e Ghesem mi mandarono a dire: Vieni, troviamci insieme in alcuna delle ville della valle di Ono. Or essi macchinavano di farmi del male.
3 However, I sent messengers to them with this reply: "I am engaged in a great enterprise and am unable to come down; why should the work stop, while I leave it to come down to you?"	3 Ed io mandai loro de’ messi, per dir loro: Io fo una grande opera, e non posso andarvi; perchè cesserebbe l’opera, tosto che io l’avrei lasciata, e sarei andato da voi?
4 Four times they sent me this same proposal, and each time I gave the same reply.	4 Ed essi mi mandarono a dire la stessa cosa quattro volte; ed io feci loro la medesima risposta.
5 Then, the fifth time, Sanballat sent me the same message by one of his servants, who bore an unsealed letter	5 E Sanballat mi mandò il suo servitore a dirmi la medesima cosa la quinta volta; e quel servitore avea una lettera aperta in mano;
6 containing this text: "Among the nations it has been reported--Geshem is witness to this--that you and the Jews are planning a rebellion; that for this reason you are rebuilding the wall; and that you are to be their king"--and so on.	6 nella quale era scritto: Ei s’intende fra queste genti, e Gasmu dice, che tu e i Giudei deliberate di ribellarvi; e che perciò tu riedifichi le mura; e secondo ciò che se ne dice, tu diventi lor re.
7 "Also, that you have set up prophets in Jerusalem to proclaim you king of Judah. Now, since matters like these must reach the ear of the king, come, let us hold council together."	7 Ed anche, che tu hai costituiti de’ profeti, per predicar di te in Gerusalemme, dicendo: Ei v’è un re in Giuda. Or queste cose perverranno agli orecchi del re; ora dunque, vieni, e prendiamo consiglio insieme.
8 I sent him this answer: "Nothing of what you report has taken place; rather, it is the invention of your own mind."	8 Ma io gli mandai a dire: Queste cose che tu dici non sono; ma tu le fingi da te stesso.
9 They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, "Their hands will slacken in the work, and it will never be completed." But instead, I now redoubled my efforts.	9 Perciocchè essi tutti ci spaventavano, dicendo: Le lor mani si rallenteranno, e lasceranno l’opera, sì che non si farà. Ora dunque, o Dio, fortifica le mie mani
10 I went to the house of Shemaiah, son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, who was unable to go about, and he said: "Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple building; let us lock the doors of the temple. For men are coming to kill you; by night they are coming to kill you."	10 Oltre a ciò, essendo io entrato in casa di Semaia, figliuolo di Delaia, figliuolo di Mehetabeel, il quale era rattenuto, egli mi disse: Riduciamoci insieme nella Casa di Dio, dentro al Tempio, e serriamo le porte del Tempio; perciocchè coloro vengono per ucciderti; e per questo effetto arriveranno di notte.
11 My answer was: "A man like me take flight? Can a man like me enter the temple to save his life? I will not go!"	11 Ma io risposi: Un uomo par mio fuggirebbe egli? e qual sarebbe il par mio ch’entrasse nel Tempio, per salvar la sua vita? Io non vi entrerò.
12 For on consideration it was plain to me that God had not sent him; rather, because Tobiah and Sanballat had bribed him, he voiced this prophecy concerning me	12 Ed io riconobbi che Iddio non l’avea mandato; perciocchè avea pronunziata quella profezia contro a me; e che Tobia e Sanballat gli davano pensione;
13 that I might act on it out of fear and commit this sin. Then they would have had a shameful story with which to discredit me.	13 acciocchè fosse loro pensionario, per fare che io mi spaventassi, e facessi così come egli diceva, e commettessi peccato; onde avessero alcun soggetto di spargere alcuna cattiva fama, per vituperarmi.
14 Keep in mind Tobiah and Sanballat, O my God, because of these things they did; keep in mind as well Noadiah the prophetess and the other prophets who were trying to frighten me.	14 Ricordati, o Dio mio, di Tobia, e di Sanballat, secondo quest’opere di ciascun di loro. Ricordati anche della profetessa Noadia, e degli altri profeti che hanno cercato di spaventarmi
15 The wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul; it had taken fifty-two days.	15 Or le mura furono finite al venticinquesimo giorno di Elul, nello spazio di cinquantadue giorni.
16 When all our enemies had heard of this, and all the nations round about had taken note of it, our enemies lost much face in the eyes of the nations, for they knew that it was with our God's help that this work had been completed.	16 E, quando tutti i nostri nemici ebbero ciò inteso, e tutte le nazioni ch’erano d’intorno a noi l’ebber veduto, si videro grandemente scaduti; e riconobbero che quest’opera era stata fatta dall’Iddio nostro.
17 At that same time, however, many letters were going to Tobiah from the nobles of Judah, and Tobiah's letters were reaching them,	17 A que’ dì ancora andavano e venivano lettere di molti notabili di Giuda a Tobia, e di esso a loro.
18 for many in Judah were in league with him, since he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah, son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam, son of Berechiah.	18 Perciocchè molti in Giuda erano in giuramento con lui; conciossiachè egli fosse genero il Secania, figliuolo di Ara; e Iohanan, suo figliuolo, avea presa per moglie la figliuola di Mesullam, figliuolo di Berechia.
19 Thus they would praise his good deeds in my presence and relate to him whatever I said; and Tobiah sent letters trying to frighten me.	19 Ed anche in presenza mia raccontavano le sue virtù, e gli palesavano i miei ragionamenti. E Tobia mandava lettere per ispaventarmi
