Nehemiah 6

1 When it had been reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and our other enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and that there was no breach left in it (though up to that time I had not yet set up the doors in the gates),	1 Samballat, Tobiyas, Guéchem l’Arabe, et les autres ennemis, apprirent que j’avais reconstruit le rempart et qu’il n’y avait plus une seule brèche; cependant, je n’avais pas encore posé les battants des portes.
2 Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: "Come, let us hold council together at Caphirim in the plain of Ono." They were planning to do me harm.	2 Alors Samballat et Guéchem m’envoyèrent ce message: - “Viens nous retrouver à Ha-Kéfirim, dans la vallée d’Ono.” En fait, ils avaient prévu de me faire du mal.
3 However, I sent messengers to them with this reply: "I am engaged in a great enterprise and am unable to come down; why should the work stop, while I leave it to come down to you?"	3 Je leur ai envoyé des messagers avec cette réponse: - “Je suis occupé à un travail important et je ne peux venir. Je ne vais tout de même pas l’interrompre pour venir à votre rencontre.”
4 Four times they sent me this same proposal, and each time I gave the same reply.	4 Ils me l’ont fait dire quatre fois, et je leur ai donné la même réponse.
5 Then, the fifth time, Sanballat sent me the same message by one of his servants, who bore an unsealed letter	5 Alors, à la cinquième fois, Samballat m’envoya son serviteur avec une lettre
6 containing this text: "Among the nations it has been reported--Geshem is witness to this--that you and the Jews are planning a rebellion; that for this reason you are rebuilding the wall; and that you are to be their king"--and so on.	6 où il disait: - “Le bruit court chez les étrangers, c’est Gachmou qui me l’a dit, que toi et les Juifs vous préparez une révolte; c’est pour cela que tu as reconstruit le rempart, et c’est toi qui veux devenir le roi.
7 "Also, that you have set up prophets in Jerusalem to proclaim you king of Judah. Now, since matters like these must reach the ear of the king, come, let us hold council together."	7 Tu as même prévu des prophètes pour te soutenir et proclamer dans Jérusalem: ‘Juda a maintenant un roi.’ “Le roi va sûrement être informé de tout cela, viens donc et discutons ensemble.”
8 I sent him this answer: "Nothing of what you report has taken place; rather, it is the invention of your own mind."	8 Je lui ai retourné cette réponse: - “Il n’y a rien de vrai dans tout ce que tu dis, c’est toi qui as tout inventé.”
9 They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, "Their hands will slacken in the work, and it will never be completed." But instead, I now redoubled my efforts.	9 Tous en effet, voulaient nous faire peur, ils se disaient: - “Ils vont se lasser du travail et la chose ne se fera pas.” Moi, au contraire, je m’accrochais davantage.
10 I went to the house of Shemaiah, son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, who was unable to go about, and he said: "Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple building; let us lock the doors of the temple. For men are coming to kill you; by night they are coming to kill you."	10 Alors je me suis rendu à la maison de Chémayas fils de Délayas, fils de Méhétabéel, car il ne pouvait venir. Il me dit: - “Retrouvons-nous au Temple de Dieu, à l’intérieur du Sanctuaire, et fermons les portes du Sanctuaire: voici qu’ils arrivent pour te tuer et c’est de nuit qu’ils vont te tuer.”
11 My answer was: "A man like me take flight? Can a man like me enter the temple to save his life? I will not go!"	11 Je lui répondis: -“Un homme comme moi irait se réfugier? Un homme comme moi ne peut pas entrer dans le Sanctuaire et demeurer en vie. Je n’y entrerai pas.”
12 For on consideration it was plain to me that God had not sent him; rather, because Tobiah and Sanballat had bribed him, he voiced this prophecy concerning me	12 J’avais reconnu que ce n’était pas Dieu qui l’avait envoyé. Sa prophétie à mon sujet, c’était simplement Tobiyas qui l’avait payé.
13 that I might act on it out of fear and commit this sin. Then they would have had a shameful story with which to discredit me.	13 C’était pour que j’aie peur et que je commette un péché en faisant ce qu’il me disait. Il m’aurait couvert de honte et cela m’aurait fait très mauvaise réputation.
14 Keep in mind Tobiah and Sanballat, O my God, because of these things they did; keep in mind as well Noadiah the prophetess and the other prophets who were trying to frighten me.	14 Ô mon Dieu! Souviens-toi de Tobiyas et de ce qu’il a fait là. Souviens-toi aussi de Noadyas, la prophétesse, et des autres prophètes qui voulaient me faire peur.
15 The wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul; it had taken fifty-two days.	15 On termina le rempart le 25 du mois d’Éloul; on l’avait fait en 52 jours.
16 When all our enemies had heard of this, and all the nations round about had taken note of it, our enemies lost much face in the eyes of the nations, for they knew that it was with our God's help that this work had been completed.	16 Lorsque tous nos ennemis apprirent cela, toutes les nations qui sont autour de nous furent remplies de peur, elles se sentirent humiliées à leurs propres yeux et elles reconnurent que c’était grâce à notre Dieu que ce travail s’était réalisé.
17 At that same time, however, many letters were going to Tobiah from the nobles of Judah, and Tobiah's letters were reaching them,	17 C’est encore en ce temps-là que se multiplia la correspondance entre les nobles de Juda et Tobiyas.
18 for many in Judah were in league with him, since he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah, son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam, son of Berechiah.	18 En effet, beaucoup de gens en Juda étaient liés par le serment qu’ils avaient fait à Tobiyas: il était le gendre de Chekanyas, fils d’Ara et son fils Yohanan avait épousé la fille de Méchoullam, fils de Bérékya. 19 Ils chantaient même devant moi ses bonnes actions et lui rapportaient tout ce que je disais, c’est pourquoi Tobiyas envoyait des lettres pour me faire peur.
19 Thus they would praise his good deeds in my presence and relate to him whatever I said; and Tobiah sent letters trying to frighten me.
