1 In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah became king of Judah;	1 La dix-huitième année du règne de Jéroboam, Abia régna sur Juda.
2 he reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother was named Michaiah, daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. There was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.	2 Il régna trois ans dans Jérusalem. Sa mère s'appelait Michaïa, et était fille d'Uriel de Babaa. Et il y eut guerre entre Abia et Jéroboam.
3 Abijah joined battle with a force of four hundred thousand picked warriors, while Jeroboam lined up against him in battle with eight hundred thousand picked and valiant warriors.	3 Abia se mit en état d'ouvrir la lutte : il avait de très braves guerriers et quatre cent mille hommes choisis. Jéroboam mit aussi son armée en bataille : elle était de huit cent mille hommes, tous choisis et très vaillants.
4 Abijah stood on Mount Zemariam, which is in the highlands of Ephraim, and said: "Listen to me, Jeroboam and all Israel!	4 Abia se tint sur le mont Séméron qui était dans la tribu d'Ephraïm, et il dit : Ecoutez, Jéroboam et tout Israël.
5 Do you not know that the LORD, the God of Israel, has given the kingdom of Israel to David forever, to him and to his sons, by a covenant made in salt?	5 Ignorez-vous que le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël, a donné à David et à ses descendants la souveraineté pour toujours sur Israël, par un pacte inviolable (de sel, note) ?
6 Yet Jeroboam, son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon, son of David, has stood up and rebelled against his lord!	6 Et Jéroboam, fils de Nabat, sujet de Salomon, fils de David, s'est élevé et révolté contre son seigneur ;
7 Worthless men, scoundrels, joined him and overcame Rehoboam, son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and unthinking, and no match for them.	7 et une multitude de gens de néant, fils de Bélial, se sont joints à lui, et se sont rendus plus forts que Roboam, fils de Salomon, parce qu'il était homme sans expérience et au cœur timide, et incapable de leur résister.
8 But now, do you think you are a match for the kingdom of the LORD commanded by the sons of David, simply because you are a huge multitude and have with you the golden calves which Jeroboam made you for gods?	8 Et vous dites aujourd'hui que vous pourrez résister au royaume du Seigneur, qu'il possède par les fils de David ; et vous avez une grande multitude de peuple, et des veaux d'or que Jéroboam vous a faits pour dieux.
9 "Have you not expelled the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made for yourselves priests like the peoples of foreign lands? Everyone who comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams becomes a priest of no-gods.	9 Et vous avez chassé les prêtres du Seigneur, fils d'Aaron, et les Lévites ; et vous vous êtes fait vous-mêmes des prêtres, comme les autres peuples de la terre. Quiconque vient, et consacre sa main par l'immolation d'un jeune taureau et de sept béliers, est fait prêtre de ceux qui ne sont pas dieux.
10 But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him. The priests ministering to the LORD are sons of Aaron, and the Levites also have their offices.	10 Mais notre Dieu à nous, c'est le Seigneur, et nous ne l'avons pas abandonné. Les prêtres qui le servent sont de la race d'Aaron, et les Lévites servent chacun à leur rang.
11 They burn holocausts to the LORD and fragrant incense morning after morning and evening after evening; they display the showbread on the pure table, and the lamps of the golden lampstand burn evening after evening; for we observe our duties to the LORD, our God, but you have abandoned him.	11 On offre chaque jour soir et matin des holocaustes au Seigneur, et des parfums composés selon les prescriptions de la loi. On expose aussi les pains sur une (la) table très pure. Nous avons le chandelier d'or, garni de lampes qu'on doit toujours allumer le soir. Car nous gardons fidèlement les ordonnances du Seigneur notre Dieu, que vous avez abandonné.
12 See, God is with us, at our head, and his priests are here with trumpets to sound the attack against you. Do not battle against the LORD, the God of your fathers, O Israelites, for you will not succeed!"	12 Ainsi le chef de notre armée, c'est Dieu même ; et les prêtres sonnent des trompettes, qui retentissent contre vous. Fils (Enfants) d'Israël, ne combattez pas contre le Seigneur, le Dieu de vos pères, car cela n'est pas avantageux pour vous.
13 But Jeroboam had an ambush go around them to come at them from the rear; so that while his army faced Judah, his ambush lay behind them.	13 Tandis qu'il parlait ainsi, Jéroboam tâchait de le surprendre par derrière ; et comme il était campé vis-à-vis des ennemis, il enfermait Juda avec son armée, sans qu'il s'en aperçût.
14 When Judah turned and saw that they had to battle on both fronts, they cried out to the LORD and the priests sounded the trumpets.	14 Mais Juda, s'étant tourné, vit qu'on allait fondre sur lui par devant et par derrière ; et il cria au Seigneur, et les prêtres commencèrent à sonner de la trompette.
15 Then the men of Judah shouted; and when they did so, God defeated Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.	15 Toute l'armée de Juda poussa de grands cris, et pendant qu'ils criaient, Dieu épouvanta Jéroboam et tout Israël, qui était en face d'Abia et de Juda.
16 The Israelites fled before Judah, and God delivered them into their hands.	16 Ainsi les fils d'Israël prirent la fuite devant Juda, et Dieu les livra entre ses mains.
17 Abijah and his people inflicted a severe defeat upon them; five hundred thousand picked men of Israel fell slain.	17 Abia et son peuple leur firent donc subir une grande défaite, et il y eut cinq cent mille hommes des plus braves (tués ou) blessés du côté d'Israël.
18 The Israelites were subdued on that occasion and the Judahites were victorious because they relied on the LORD, the God of their fathers.	18 Les fils d'Israël furent humiliés en ce temps, et les fils de Juda furent vivement réconfortés, parce qu'ils avaient mis leur confiance dans le Seigneur, le Dieu de leurs pères.
19 Abijah pursued Jeroboam and took cities from him: Bethel and its dependencies, Jeshanah and its dependencies, and Ephron and its dependencies.	19 Abia poursuivit Jéroboam dans sa fuite, et lui prit des villes, Béthel et ses dépendances (filles), Jésana et ses dépendances (filles), Ephron (aussi) et ses dépendances (filles).
20 Jeroboam did not regain power during the time of Abijah; the LORD struck him down and he died,	20 Et depuis lors Jéroboam ne fut plus en état de faire aucune résistance pendant le règne d'Abia. Et Dieu le frappa, et il mourut.
21 while Abijah continued to grow stronger. He took to himself fourteen wives and fathered twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.	21 Mais Abia vit son règne affermi ; et il épousa quatorze femmes, dont il eut vingt-deux fils et seize filles.
22 The rest of Abijah's acts, his deeds and his words, are written in the midrash of the prophet Iddo.	22 Le reste des paroles (actions), des démarches (voies) et des actions (œuvres) d'Abia a été très exactement écrit dans le livre du prophète Addo.
23 Abijah rested with his ancestors; they buried him in the City of David. His son Asa succeeded him as king. During his time, ten years of peace began in the land.
