NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
When David had grown old and was near the end of his days, he made his son Solomon king over Israel.1 And David being old and full of days, made Solomon his son king over Israel.
He then gathered together all the leaders of Israel, together with the priests and the Levites.2 And he gathered together all the princes of Israel, and the priests and Levites.
The Levites thirty years old and above were counted, and their total number was found to be thirty-eight thousand men.3 And the Levites were numbered from the age of thirty years, and upwards: and there were found of them thirty-eight thousand men.
Of these, twenty-four thousand were to direct the service of the house of the LORD, six thousand were to be officials and judges,4 Of these twenty-four thousand were chosen, and distributed unto the ministry of the house of the Lord: and six thousand were the overseers and judges.
four thousand were to be gatekeepers, and four thousand were to praise the LORD with the instruments which David had devised for praise.5 Moreover four thousand were porters: and as many singers singing to the Lord with the instruments, which he had made to sing with.
David divided them into classes according to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.6 And David distributed them into courses by the families of the sons of Levi, to wit, of Gerson, and of Caath, and of Merari.
To the Gershonites belonged Ladan and Shimei.7 The sons of Gerson were Leedan and Semei.
The sons of Ladan: Jehiel the chief, then Zetham and Joel; three in all.8 The sons of Leedan: the chief Jahiel, and Zethan, and Joel, three.
The sons of Shimei were Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran; three. These were the heads of the families of Ladan.9 The sons of Semei: Salomith, and Hosiel, and Aran, three: these were the heads of the families of Leedan.
The sons of Shimei were Jahath, Zizah, Jeush, and Beriah; these were the sons of Shimei, four in all.10 And the sons of Semei were Leheth, and Ziza, and Jaus, and Baria: these were the sons of Semei, four.
Jahath was the chief and Zizah was second to him; but Jeush and Beriah had not many sons, and therefore they were classed as a single family, fulfilling a single office.11 And Leheth was the first, Ziza the second: but Jaus and Baria had not many children, and therefore they were counted in one family, and in one house.
The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel; four in all.12 The sons of Caath were Amram, and Isaar, Hebron, and Oziel, four.
The sons of Amram were Aaron and Moses. Aaron was set apart to be consecrated as most holy, he and his sons forever, to offer sacrifice before the LORD, to minister to him, and to bless his name forever.13 The sons of Amram, Aaron, and Moses. And Aaron was separated to minister in the holy of holies, he and his sons for ever, and to burn incense before the Lord, according to his ceremonies, and to bless his name for ever.
As for Moses, however, the man of God, his sons were counted as part of the tribe of Levi.14 The sons also of Moses, the man of God, were numbered in the tribe of Levi.
The sons of Moses were Gershom and Eliezer.15 The sons of Moses were Gersom and Eliezer:
The sons of Gershom: Shubael the chief.16 The sons of Gersom: Subuel the first.
The sons of Eliezer were Rehabiah the chief--Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very numerous.17 And the sons of Eliezer were: Rohobia the first: and Eliezer had no more sons. But the sons of Rohobia were multiplied exceedingly.
The sons of Izhar: Shelomith the chief.18 The sons of Isaar: Salomith the first.
The sons of Hebron: Jeriah, the chief, Amariah, the second, Jahaziel, the third, and Jekameam, the fourth.19 The sons of Hebron: Jeriau the first, Amarias the second, Jahaziel the third, Jecmaam the fourth.
The sons of Uzziel: Micah, the chief, and Isshiah, the second.20 The sons of Oziel: Micha the first, Jesia the second.
The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish.21 The sons of Merari: Moholi, and Musi. The sons of Moholi: Eleazar and Cia.
Eleazar died leaving no sons, only daughters; the sons of Kish, their kinsmen, married them.22 And Eleazar died, and had no sons but daughters: and the sons of Cis their brethren took them.
The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth; three in all.23 The sons of Musi: Moholi, and Eder, and Jerimoth, three.
These were the sons of Levi according to their ancestral houses, the family heads as they were enrolled one by one according to their names. They performed the work of the service of the house of the LORD from twenty years of age upward,24 These are the sons of Levi in their kindreds and families, princes by their courses, and the number of every head that did the works of the ministry of the house of the Lord from twenty years old and upward.
David said: "The LORD, the God of Israel, has given rest to his people, and has taken up his dwelling in Jerusalem.25 For David said: The Lord the God of Israel hath given rest to his people, and a habitation in Jerusalem for ever.
Henceforth the Levites need not carry the Dwelling or any of its furnishings or equipment.26 And it shall not be the office of the Levites to carry any more the tabernacle, and all the vessels for the service thereof.
for David's final orders were to enlist the Levites from the time they were twenty years old.27 So according to the last precepts of David, the sons of Levi are to be numbered from twenty years old and upward.
Rather, their duty shall be to assist the sons of Aaron in the service of the house of the LORD, having charge of the courts, the chambers, and the preservation of everything holy: they shall take part in the service of the house of God.28 And they are to be under the hand of the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of the Lord, in the porches, and in the chambers, and in the place of purification, and in the sanctuary, and in all the works of the ministry of the temple of the Lord.
They shall also have charge of the showbread, of the fine flour for the cereal offering, of the wafers of unleavened bread, and of the baking and mixing, and of all measures of quantity and size.29 And the priests have the charge of the leaves of proposition, and of the sacrifice of fine flour, and of the unleavened cakes, and of the fryingpan, and of the roasting, and of every weight and measure.
They must be present every morning to offer thanks and to praise the LORD, and likewise in the evening;30 And the Levites are to stand in the morning to give thanks, and to sing praises to the Lord: and in like manner in the evening,
and at every offering of holocausts to the LORD on sabbaths, new moons, and feast days, in such numbers as are prescribed, they must always be present before the LORD.31 As well in the oblation of the holocausts of the Lord, as in the sabbaths and in the new moons, and the rest of the solemnities, according to the number and ceremonies prescribed for every thing, continually before the Lord.
They shall observe what is prescribed for them concerning the meeting tent, the sanctuary, and the sons of Aaron, their brethren, in the service of the house of the LORD."32 And let them keep the observances of the tabernacle of the covenant, and the ceremonies of the sanctuary, and the charge of the sons of Aaron their brethren, that they may minister in the house of the Lord.
