1 Afterward Nahash, king of the Ammonites, died and his son succeeded him as king.	1 Después de esto, murió Najás, el rey de los amonitas, y reinó su hijo en lugar de él.
2 David said, "I will show kindness to Hanun, the son of Nahash, for his father treated me with kindness." Therefore he sent envoys to him to comfort him over the death of his father. But when David's servants had entered the land of the Ammonites to comfort Hanun,	2 David dijo: «Voy a comportarme lealmente con Janún, hijo de Najás, porque su padre ha sido leal conmigo». Entonces envió a unos mensajeros para presentarle sus condolencias por la muerte de su padre. Pero cuando los servidores de David llegaron al país de los amonitas para darle el pésame a Janún,
3 the Ammonite princes said to Hanun, "Do you think David is doing this--sending you these consolers--to honor your father? Have not his servants rather come to you to explore the land, spying it out for its overthrow?"	3 los jefes de los amonitas dijeron a Janún: «¿Crees que David te hace llegar sus condolencias para honrar a tu padre? ¿No será que sus servidores han venido como espías, para sembrar la agitación y explorar el país?».
4 Thereupon Hanun seized David's servants and had them shaved and their garments cut off half-way at the hips. Then he sent them away.	4 Entonces Janún hizo detener a los servidores de David, los rapó, les cortó la ropa a la altura de las caderas y los despidió.
5 When David was informed of what had happened to his men, he sent messengers to meet them, for the men had been greatly disgraced. "Remain at Jericho," the king told them, "until your beards have grown again; and then you may come back here."	5 Apenas lo pusieron al tanto de lo sucedido con aquellos hombres, David ordenó que fueran a recibirlos, porque estaban muy avergonzados. Y el rey les mandó a decir: «Quédense en Jericó hasta que les crezca la barba, y después vengan».
6 When the Ammonites realized that they had put themselves in bad odor with David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents of silver to hire chariots and horsemen from Aram Naharaim, from Aram-maacah, and from Zobah.	6 Cuando los amonitas se dieron cuenta de que se habían enemistado con David, Janún y los amonitas enviaron mil talentos de plata para contratar carros de guerra y caballería en Aram Naharaim, en Aram de Maacá y en Sobá.
7 They hired thirty-two thousand chariots along with the king of Maacah and his army, who came and encamped before Medeba. The Ammonites also assembled from their cities and came out for war.	7 Así contrataron treinta y dos mil carros de guerra y al rey de Maacá con sus tropas, que fueron a acampar frente a Madabá, mientras los amonitas se concentraban fuera de sus ciudades y acudían al combate.
8 When David heard of this, he sent Joab and his whole army of warriors against them.	8 David, al enterarse, envió a Joab con todo el ejército y con sus guerreros.
9 The Ammonites marched out and lined up for a battle at the gate of the city, while the kings who had come to their help remained apart in the open field.	9 Los amonitas salieron y formaron en orden de batalla, pero los reyes que habían venido se mantuvieron aparte, en campo abierto.
10 When Joab saw that there was a battle line both in front of and behind him, he chose some of the best fighters among the Israelites and set them in array against the Arameans;	10 Cuando Joab vio que había dos frentes de batalla, uno delante de él y otro detrás, seleccionó a lo más escogido de Israel y los alineó frente a los arameos,
11 the rest of the army, which he placed under the command of his brother Abishai, then lined up to oppose the Ammonites.	11 dejando el resto de la tropa a las órdenes de su hermano Abisai. Estos tomaron posiciones frente a los amonitas,
12 And he said: "If the Arameans prove too strong for me, you must come to my help; and if the Ammonites prove too strong for you, I will save you.	12 y Joab dijo: «Si los arameos son más fuertes que yo, tú vendrás en mi ayuda; y si los amonitas son más fuertes que tú, yo iré a auxiliarte.
13 Hold steadfast and let us show ourselves courageous for the sake of our people and the cities of our God; then may the LORD do what seems best to him."	13 ¡Animo! ¡Luchemos valerosamente por nuestro pueblo y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios! ¡Y que el Señor haga lo que le parezca bien!».
14 Joab therefore advanced with his men to engage the Arameans in battle; but they fled before him.	14 Luego Joab avanzó con sus tropas para enfrentarse con los arameos y estos huyeron delante de él.
15 And when the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they also took to flight before his brother Abishai, and reentered the city. Joab then returned to Jerusalem.	15 Cuando los amonitas vieron que los arameos habían huido, también ellos huyeron delante de Abisai, el hermano de Joab, y entraron en la ciudad, Joab, por su parte, se volvió a Jerusalén.
16 Seeing themselves vanquished by Israel, the Arameans sent messengers to bring out the Arameans from the other side of the River, with Shophach, the general of Hadadezer's army, at their head.	16 Los arameos, al ver que habían sido vencidos por Israel, enviaron mensajeros para movilizar a los arameos del otro lado del Río. Sofác, el jefe del ejército de Hadadézer, estaba al frente de ellos.
17 When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel together, crossed the Jordan, and met them. With the army of David drawn up to fight the Arameans, they gave battle.	17 Cuando informaron de esto a David, él concentró a todo Israel, cruzó el Jordán, llegó adonde ellos estaban y tomó posiciones contra ellos. 18 But the Arameans fled before Israel, and David slew seven thousand of their chariot fighters and forty thousand of their foot soldiers; he also killed Shophach, the general of the army.	18 Los arameos huyeron delante de Israel, y David mató a siete mil soldados de caballería y cuarenta mil hombres de a pie. 19 When the vassals of Hadadezer saw themselves vanquished by Israel, they made peace with David and became his subjects. After this, the Arameans refused to come to the aid of the Ammonites.	19 Cuando los que estaban al servicio de Hadadézer vieron que Israel los había derrotado, hicieron las paces con David y le quedaron sometidos. En adelante, los arameos no quisieron prestar más ayuda a los amonitas.
