1 Now the Philistines were at war with Israel; the Israelites fled before the Philistines, and a number of them fell, slain on Mount Gilboa.	1 Venuti a battaglia i Filistei contro Israele, gli uomini d'Israele fuggirono davanti ai Palestini, e caddero feriti sul monte Gelboe.
2 The Philistines pressed hard after Saul and his sons. When the Philistines had killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, sons of Saul,	2 Avanzatisi i Filistei nell'inseguire Saul e i suoi figli, uccisero Gionata, Abinadab e Melchisua figli di Saul.
3 the whole fury of the battle descended upon Saul. Then the archers found him, and wounded him with their arrows.	3 La battaglia divenne più accanita contro Saul: gli arcieri lo raggiunsero e lo colpirono colle frecce.
4 Saul said to his armor-bearer, "Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, that these uncircumcised may not come and maltreat me." But the armor-bearer, in great fear, refused. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it;	4 Allora Saul disse al suo scudiere: « Sfodera la tua spada e uccidimi chè non vengano questi incirconcisi a oltraggiarmi ». 5 and seeing him dead, the armor-bearer also fell on his sword and died.	5 Veduto ciò, e che Saul era morto, anche il suo scudiere si gettò sopra la sua spada e morì.
6 Thus, with Saul and his three sons, his whole house died at one time.	6 Così perì Saul e i suoi tre figli, e rovinò anche tutta la sua casa.
7 When all the Israelites who were in the valley saw that Saul and his sons had died in the rout, they left their cities and fled; thereupon the Philistines came and occupied them.	7 Veduto questo, gli uomini d'Israele che abitavano nelle pianure fuggirono, e, morto che fu Saul con i suoi figli, abbandonarono le loro città per disperdersi qua e là e andarono ad abitarle i Filistei.
8 On the following day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons where they had fallen on Mount Gilboa.	8 Il giorno dopo, i Filistei, andati a raccogliere le spoglie degli uccisi, trovarono Saul e i suoi figli stesi sul monte di Gelboe.
9 They stripped him, cut off his head, and took his armor; these they sent throughout the land of the Philistines to convey the good news to their idols and their people.	9 Spogliatolo, tagliatagli la testa e presene le armi, lo mandarono nel loro paese, affinchè fosse portato in giro e fatto vedere nei templi degli idoli e alla gente.
10 His armor they put in the house of their gods, but his skull they impaled on the temple of Dagon.	10 Le sue armi le consacrarono nel tempio del loro dio; la testa l'affissero nel tempio di Dagon.
11 When all the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead had heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,	11 Or gli uomini di Iabes di Galaad, udito quanto i Filistei avevano fatto a Saul,
12 its warriors rose to a man, recovered the bodies of Saul and his sons, and brought them to Jabesh. They buried their bones under the oak of Jabesh, and fasted seven days.	12 tutti i valorosi si mossero, andarono a togliere i cadaveri di Saul e dei suoi figli, e, portatili a Iabes, seppellirono le loro ossa sotto la quercia in Iabes, e digiunarono sette giorni.
13 Thus Saul died because of his rebellion against the LORD in disobeying his command, and also because he had sought counsel of a necromancer,	13 Così morì Saul per le sue iniquità: per aver trasgredito il comando fattogli dal Signore. Oltre a non osservarlo, consultò anche la pitonessa
14 and had not rather inquired of the LORD. Therefore the LORD slew him, and transferred his kingdom to David, the son of Jesse.	14 e non sperò nel Signore. Ecco perchè Egli lo fece morire e trasferì il regno di lui a David figlio d'Isai.
