NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
Now the Philistines were at war with Israel; the Israelites fled before the Philistines, and a number of them fell, slain on Mount Gilboa.1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down wounded in mount Gelboe.
The Philistines pressed hard after Saul and his sons. When the Philistines had killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, sons of Saul,2 And the Philistines drew near pursuing after Saul, and his sons, and they killed Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Melchisua the sons of Saul.
the whole fury of the battle descended upon Saul. Then the archers found him, and wounded him with their arrows.3 And the battle grew hard against Saul, and the archers reached him, and wounded him with arrows.
Saul said to his armor-bearer, "Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, that these uncircumcised may not come and maltreat me." But the armor-bearer, in great fear, refused. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it;4 And Saul said to his armourbearer: Draw thy sword, and kill me: lest these uncircumcised come, and mock me. But his armourbearer would not, for he was struck with fear: so Saul took his sword, and fell upon it.
and seeing him dead, the armor-bearer also fell on his sword and died.5 And when his armourbearer saw it, to wit, that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died.
Thus, with Saul and his three sons, his whole house died at one time.6 So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house fell together.
When all the Israelites who were in the valley saw that Saul and his sons had died in the rout, they left their cities and fled; thereupon the Philistines came and occupied them.7 And when the men of Israel, that dwelt in the plains, saw this, they fled: and Saul and his sons being dead, they forsook their cities, and were scattered up and down: and the Philistines came, and dwelt in them.
On the following day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons where they had fallen on Mount Gilboa.8 And the next day the Philistines taking away the spoils of them that were slain, found Saul and his sons lying on mount Gelboe.
They stripped him, cut off his head, and took his armor; these they sent throughout the land of the Philistines to convey the good news to their idols and their people.9 And when they had stripped him, and cut off his head, and taken away his armour, they sent it into their land, to be carried about, and shewn in the temples of the idols and to the people.
His armor they put in the house of their gods, but his skull they impaled on the temple of Dagon.10 And his armour they dedicated in the temple of their god, and his head they fastened up in the temple of Dagon.
When all the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead had heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,11 And when the men of Jabes Galaad had heard this, to wit, all that the Philistines had done to Saul,
its warriors rose to a man, recovered the bodies of Saul and his sons, and brought them to Jabesh. They buried their bones under the oak of Jabesh, and fasted seven days.12 All the valiant men of them arose, and took the bodies of Saul and of his sons, and brought them to Jabes, and buried their bones under the oak that was in Jabes, and they fasted seven days.
Thus Saul died because of his rebellion against the LORD in disobeying his command, and also because he had sought counsel of a necromancer,13 So Saul died for his iniquities, because he transgressed the commandment of the Lord, which he had commanded, and kept it not: and moreover consulted also a witch,
and had not rather inquired of the LORD. Therefore the LORD slew him, and transferred his kingdom to David, the son of Jesse.14 And trusted not is the Lord: therefore he slew him, and transferred his kingdom to David the son of Isai.
