1 When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his garments, wrapped himself in sackcloth, and went into the temple of the LORD.	1 A ce récit, le roi Ezéchias déchira ses vêtements, se couvrit d'un sac et se rendit au Temple deYahvé.
2 He sent Eliakim, the master of the palace, Shebnah the scribe, and the elders of the priests, wrapped in sackcloth, to tell the prophet Isaiah, son of Amoz,	2 Il envoya le maître du palais Elyaqim, le secrétaire Shebna et les anciens des prêtres, couverts desacs, auprès du prophète Isaïe fils d'Amoç.
3 "Thus says Hezekiah: 'This is a day of distress, of rebuke, and of disgrace. Children are at the point of birth, but there is no strength to bring them forth.	3 Ceux-ci lui dirent: "Ainsi parle Ezéchias: Ce jour-ci est un jour d'angoisse, de châtiment etd'opprobre. Les enfants sont à terme et la force manque pour enfanter.
4 Perhaps the LORD, your God, will hear all the words of the commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, sent to taunt the living God, and will rebuke him for the words which the LORD, your God, has heard. So send up a prayer for the remnant that is here.'"	4 Puisse Yahvé, ton Dieu, entendre les paroles du grand échanson, que le roi d'Assyrie, son maître, aenvoyé insulter le Dieu vivant, et puisse Yahvé, ton Dieu, punir les paroles qu'il a entendues! Adresse une prièreen faveur du reste qui subsiste encore."
5 When the servants of King Hezekiah had come to Isaiah,	5 Lorsque les ministres du roi Ezéchias furent arrivés auprès d'Isaïe,
6 he said to them, "Tell this to your master: 'Thus says the LORD: Do not be frightened by the words you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.	6 celui-ci leur dit: "Vous direz à votre maître: Ainsi parle Yahvé. N'aie pas peur des paroles que tu asentendues, des blasphèmes que les valets du roi d'Assyrie ont lancés contre moi.
7 I am about to put in him such a spirit that, when he hears a certain report, he will return to his own land, and there I will cause him to fall by the sword.'"	7 Voici que je vais mettre en lui un esprit et, sur une nouvelle qu'il entendra, il retournera dans sonpays et, dans son pays, je le ferai tomber sous l'épée."
8 When the commander, on his return, heard that the king of Assyria had withdrawn from Lachish, he found him besieging Libnah.	8 Le grand échanson s'en retourna et retrouva le roi d'Assyrie en train de combattre contre Libna. Legrand échanson avait appris en effet que le roi avait décampé de Lakish,
9 The king of Assyria heard a report that Tirhakah, king of Ethiopia, had come out to fight against him. Again he sent envoys to Hezekiah with this message:	9 car il avait reçu cette nouvelle au sujet de Tirhaqa, roi de Kush: "Voici qu'il est parti en guerrecontre toi." De nouveau, Sennachérib envoya des messagers à Ezéchias pour lui dire:
10 "Thus shall you say to Hezekiah, king of Judah: 'Do not let your God on whom you rely deceive you by saying that Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.	10 "Vous parlerez ainsi à Ezéchias, roi de Juda: Que ton Dieu en qui tu te confies, ne t'abuse pas endisant: Jérusalem ne sera pas livrée aux mains du roi d'Assyrie!
11 You have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all other countries: they doomed them! Will you, then, be saved?	11 Tu as appris ce que les rois d'Assyrie ont fait à tous les pays, les vouant à l'anathème, et toi, tuserais délivré!
12 Did the gods of the nations whom my fathers destroyed save them? Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, or the Edenites in Telassar?	12 Les ont-ils délivrées les dieux des nations que mes pères ont dévastées, Gozân, Harân, Réçeph, etles Edénites qui étaient à Tell Basar?
13 Where are the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, or the kings of the cities Sepharvaim, Hena and Avva?'"	13 Où sont le roi de Hamat, le roi d'Arpad, le roi de Laïr, de Sepharvayim, de Héna et de Ivva?"
14 Hezekiah took the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; then he went up to the temple of the LORD, and spreading it out before him,	14 Ezéchias prit la lettre des mains des messagers et la lut. Puis il monta au Temple de Yahvé et ladéplia devant Yahvé.
15 he prayed in the LORD'S presence: "O LORD, God of Israel, enthroned upon the cherubim! You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made the heavens and the earth.	15 Et Ezéchias fit cette prière en présence de Yahvé: "Yahvé, Dieu d'Israël, qui sièges sur leschérubins, c'est toi qui es seul Dieu de tous les royaumes de la terre, c'est toi qui as fait le ciel et la terre.
16 Incline your ear, O LORD, and listen! Open your eyes, O LORD, and see! Hear the words of Sennacherib which he sent to taunt the living God.	16 Prête l'oreille, Yahvé, et entends, ouvre les yeux, Yahvé, et vois! Entends les paroles deSennachérib, qui a envoyé dire des insultes au Dieu vivant.
17 Truly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands,	17 Il est vrai, Yahvé, les rois d'Assyrie ont exterminé les nations,
18 and cast their gods into the fire; they destroyed them because they were not gods, but the work of human hands, wood and stone.	18 ils ont jeté au feu leurs dieux, car ce n'étaient pas des dieux, mais l'ouvrage de mains d'hommes, dubois et de la pierre, alors ils les ont anéantis.
19 Therefore, O LORD, our God, save us from the power of this man, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, O LORD, are God."	19 Mais maintenant, Yahvé, notre Dieu, sauve-nous de sa main, je t'en supplie, et que tous lesroyaumes de la terre sachent que toi seul es Dieu, Yahvé!"
20 Then Isaiah, son of Amoz, sent this message to Hezekiah: "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, in answer to your prayer for help against Sennacherib, king of Assyria: I have listened!	20 Alors Isaïe, fils d'Amoç, envoya dire à Ezéchias: "Ainsi parle Yahvé, Dieu d'Israël. J'ai entendu laprière que tu m'as adressée au sujet de Sennachérib, roi d'Assyrie.
21 This is the word the LORD has spoken concerning him: " 'She despises you, laughs you to scorn, the virgin daughter Zion! Behind you she wags her head, daughter Jerusalem.	21 Voici l'oracle que Yahvé a prononcé contre lui: Elle te méprise, elle te raille, la vierge, fille deSion. Elle hoche la tête après toi, la fille de Jérusalem.
22 Whom have you insulted and blasphemed, against whom have you raised your voice'And lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel!	22 Qui donc as-tu insulté, blasphémé? Contre qui as-tu parlé haut et levé ton regard altier? Contre leSaint d'Israël!
23 Through your servants you have insulted the LORD. You said: With my many chariots I climbed the mountain heights, the recesses of Lebanon; I cut down its lofty cedars, its choice cypresses; I reached the remotest heights, its forest park.	23 Par tes messagers, tu as insulté le Seigneur. Tu as dit: Avec mes nombreux chars, j'ai gravi lesommet des monts, les dernières cimes du Liban. J'ai coupé sa haute futaie de cèdres et ses plus beaux cyprès.J'ai atteint son ultime retraite, son parc forestier.
24 I dug wells and drank water in foreign lands; I dried up with the soles of my feet all the rivers of Egypt.	24 Moi, j'ai creusé et j'ai bu des eaux étrangères, j'ai asséché sous la plante de mes pieds tous lesfleuves d'Egypte.
25 " 'Have you not heard? Long ago I prepared it, From days of old I planned it. Now I have brought it to pass: That you should reduce fortified cities into heaps of ruins,	25 Entends-tu bien? De longue date, j'ai préparé cela, aux jours antiques j'en fis le dessein, maintenantje le réalise. Ton destin fut de réduire en tas de ruines des villes fortifiées.
26 While their inhabitants, shorn of power, are dismayed and ashamed, Becoming like the plants of the field, like the green growth, like the scorched grass on the housetops.	26 Leurs habitants, les mains débiles, épouvantés et confondus, furent comme plantes des champs,verdure du gazon, herbes des toits et guérets sous le vent d'orient.
27 I am aware whether you stand or sit; I know whether you come or go,	27 Quand tu te lèves et quand tu t'assieds, quand tu sors ou tu entres, je le sais.
28 and also your rage against me. Because of your rage against me and your fury which has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and make you return the way you came.	28 Parce que tu t'es emporté contre moi, que ton insolence est montée à mes oreilles, je passerai monanneau à ta narine et mon mors à tes lèvres, je te ramènerai sur la route par laquelle tu es venu.
29 " 'This shall be a sign for you: this year you shall eat the aftergrowth, next year, what grows of itself; But in the third year, sow and reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit!	29 Ceci te servira de signe; On mangera cette année du grain tombé, et l'an prochain du grain dejachère, mais, le troisième an, semez et moissonnez, plantez des vignes et mangez de leur fruit.
30 The remaining survivors of the house of Judah shall again strike root below and bear fruit above.	30 Le reste survivant de la maison de Juda produira de nouvelles racines en bas et des fruits en haut.
31 For out of Jerusalem shall come a remnant, and from Mount Zion, survivors. The zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.'	31 Car de Jérusalem sortira un reste, et des réchappés, du mont Sion. L'amour jaloux de Yahvé Sabaotfera cela!
32 "Therefore, thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria: 'He shall not reach this city, nor shoot an arrow at it, nor come before it with a shield, nor cast up siege-works against it.	32 Voici donc ce que dit Yahvé sur le roi d'Assyrie: Il n'entrera pas dans cette ville, il n'y lancera pasde flèche, il ne tendra pas de bouclier contre elle, il n'y entassera pas de remblai.
33 He shall return by the same way he came, without entering the city, says the LORD.	33 Par la route qui l'amena, il s'en retournera, il n'entrera pas dans cette ville, oracle de Yahvé.
34 I will shield and save this city for my own sake, and for the sake of my servant David.'"	34 Je protégerai cette ville et la sauverai à cause de moi et de mon serviteur David."
35 That night the angel of the LORD went forth and struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. Early the next morning, there they were, all the corpses of the dead.	35 Cette même nuit, l'Ange de Yahvé sortit et frappa dans le camp assyrien 185.000 hommes. Lematin, au réveil, ce n'étaient plus que des cadavres.
36 So Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, broke camp, and went back home to Nineveh.	36 Sennachérib roi d'Assyrie leva le camp et partit. Il s'en retourna et resta à Ninive.
37 When he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer slew him with the sword and fled into the land of Ararat. His son Esarhaddon reigned in his stead.	37 Un jour qu'il était prosterné dans le temple de Nisrok, son dieu, ses fils Adrammélek et Saréçer lefrappèrent avec l'épée et se sauvèrent au pays d'Ararat. Asarhaddon, son fils, devint roi à sa place.
