1 When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his garments, wrapped himself in sackcloth, and went into the temple of the LORD.	1 Lorsque le roi Ézékias entendit ces paroles, il déchira ses habits, il se couvrit d’un sac et se rendit à la Maison de Yahvé.
2 He sent Eliakim, the master of the palace, Shebnah the scribe, and the elders of the priests, wrapped in sackcloth, to tell the prophet Isaiah, son of Amoz,	2 Puis il envoya le maître du palais Élyakim, le secrétaire Chebna et les anciens des prêtres vers le prophète Isaïe, fils d’Amos: tous étaient vêtus de sacs.
3 "Thus says Hezekiah: 'This is a day of distress, of rebuke, and of disgrace. Children are at the point of birth, but there is no strength to bring them forth.	3 Ils lui dirent: “Voici ce qu’a dit Ézékias: Ce jour est un jour de malheur, de châtiment et de honte. L’enfant est pour sortir du sein maternel, mais la force manque pour accoucher.
4 Perhaps the LORD, your God, will hear all the words of the commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, sent to taunt the living God, and will rebuke him for the words which the LORD, your God, has heard. So send up a prayer for the remnant that is here.'"	4 Que Yahvé, ton Dieu, entende toutes les paroles du grand échanson que le roi d’Assyrie, son seigneur, a envoyé pour insulter le Dieu vivant. Que Yahvé, ton Dieu, punisse les paroles qu’il a entendues; et toi, fais monter une prière en faveur du reste qui subsiste encore.”
5 When the servants of King Hezekiah had come to Isaiah,	5 Les serviteurs du roi Ézékias arrivèrent auprès d’Isaïe.
6 he said to them, "Tell this to your master: 'Thus says the LORD: Do not be frightened by the words you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.	6 Isaïe leur dit: “Vous redirez à votre maître cette parole de Yahvé: N’aie pas peur des paroles que tu as entendues, ces blasphèmes que les serviteurs du roi d’Assyrie ont prononcés contre moi.
7 I am about to put in him such a spirit that, when he hears a certain report, he will return to his own land, and there I will cause him to fall by the sword.'"	7 Je vais agir sur son esprit, lui faire entendre une nouvelle qui le fera reprendre la route de son pays et, dans son pays, je le ferai tomber par l’épée.”
8 When the commander, on his return, heard that the king of Assyria had withdrawn from Lachish, he found him besieging Libnah.	8 Le grand échanson repartit et trouva le roi d’Assyrie occupé à combattre contre Libna: le grand échanson savait déjà que le roi avait quitté Lakish
9 The king of Assyria heard a report that Tirhakah, king of Ethiopia, had come out to fight against him. Again he sent envoys to Hezekiah with this message:	9 après avoir reçu cette nouvelle: “Tirhaka, roi de Kouch, s’est mis en route pour te faire la guerre.” De nouveau donc, le roi envoya des messagers à Ézékias en leur disant:
10 "Thus shall you say to Hezekiah, king of Judah: 'Do not let your God on whom you rely deceive you by saying that Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.	10 “Voici ce que vous direz à Ézékias, roi de Juda: Tu mets ta confiance en ton Dieu et tu dis que Jérusalem ne sera pas livrée entre les mains du roi d’Assyrie. Mais ton Dieu pourrait bien te décevoir.
11 You have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all other countries: they doomed them! Will you, then, be saved?	11 Tu as entendu ce que les rois d’Assyrie ont fait à tous les pays, ils les ont voués à l’anathème. Pourquoi toi serais-tu délivré?
12 Did the gods of the nations whom my fathers destroyed save them? Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, or the Edenites in Telassar?	12 Les dieux des nations que mes pères ont exterminées, Gozan, Harrân, Récef et les Édénites qui étaient à Tel-Basar, ont-ils été capables de les sauver?
13 Where are the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, or the kings of the cities Sepharvaim, Hena and Avva?'"	13 Où sont les rois de Hamat, d’Arpad, de Laïr, de Séfarvayim, de Héna et d’Ivva?”
14 Hezekiah took the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; then he went up to the temple of the LORD, and spreading it out before him,	14 Ézékias prit la lettre des mains des messagers et la lut, puis il se rendit à la Maison de Yahvé. Là, Ézékias la déroula devant Yahvé
15 he prayed in the LORD'S presence: "O LORD, God of Israel, enthroned upon the cherubim! You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made the heavens and the earth.	15 et il fit cette prière: “Yahvé, Dieu d’Israël, Dieu qui sièges sur les Chérubins, il n’y a pas d’autre Dieu que toi dans tous les royaumes de la terre: c’est toi qui as fait le ciel et la terre.
16 Incline your ear, O LORD, and listen! Open your eyes, O LORD, and see! Hear the words of Sennacherib which he sent to taunt the living God.	16 Prête l’oreille, Yahvé, entends, ouvre les yeux, Yahvé, et vois! Entends les paroles, les insultes de Sennakérib contre le Dieu vivant.
17 Truly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands,	17 C’est vrai, Yahvé, les rois d’Assyrie ont ravagé les nations païennes.
18 and cast their gods into the fire; they destroyed them because they were not gods, but the work of human hands, wood and stone.	18 Ils ont livré leurs dieux au feu, mais ce n’étaient pas des dieux, seulement l’œuvre des mains de l’homme, du bois et de la pierre; ils les ont donc détruits.
19 Therefore, O LORD, our God, save us from the power of this man, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, O LORD, are God."	19 Mais maintenant, Yahvé, notre Dieu, délivre-nous de sa main, je t’en prie, et tous les royaumes de la terre sauront que toi seul, Yahvé, tu es Dieu!”
20 Then Isaiah, son of Amoz, sent this message to Hezekiah: "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, in answer to your prayer for help against Sennacherib, king of Assyria: I have listened!	20 Isaïe, fils d’Amos, envoya dire ceci à Ézékias: “Voici ce que dit Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël: J’ai entendu la prière que tu m’as adressée au sujet de Sennakérib, roi d’Assyrie.
21 This is the word the LORD has spoken concerning him: " 'She despises you, laughs you to scorn, the virgin daughter Zion! Behind you she wags her head, daughter Jerusalem.	21 Eh bien, voici la parole que Yahvé prononce contre lui: “Elle te méprise, elle se moque de toi, la vierge fille de Sion, elle secoue la tête en te regardant, la fille de Jérusalem.
22 Whom have you insulted and blasphemed, against whom have you raised your voice'And lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel!	22 Qui as-tu insulté avec tes blasphèmes? Contre qui as-tu élevé la voix et levé tes yeux pleins d’orgueil? Contre le Saint d’Israël!
23 Through your servants you have insulted the LORD. You said: With my many chariots I climbed the mountain heights, the recesses of Lebanon; I cut down its lofty cedars, its choice cypresses; I reached the remotest heights, its forest park.	23 Par la bouche de tes messagers tu as insulté le Seigneur! Tu as dit: Avec mes nombreux chars j’ai gravi les sommets des montagnes, les pentes du Liban. J’ai coupé la forêt de cèdres et les plus beaux de ses cyprès. J’ai atteint le plus lointain de ses repaires et son jardin boisé.
24 I dug wells and drank water in foreign lands; I dried up with the soles of my feet all the rivers of Egypt.	24 J’ai creusé, et j’ai bu des eaux étrangères, j’ai desséché sous la plante de mes pieds tous les canaux de l’Égypte.
25 " 'Have you not heard? Long ago I prepared it, From days of old I planned it. Now I have brought it to pass: That you should reduce fortified cities into heaps of ruins,	25 On ne t’a donc pas dit que depuis longtemps je préparais cela? Dès le commencement j’ai fait un projet, que maintenant je réalise. Tu devais transformer des villes fortifiées en un tas de ruines;
26 While their inhabitants, shorn of power, are dismayed and ashamed, Becoming like the plants of the field, like the green growth, like the scorched grass on the housetops.	26 leurs habitants, trop faibles, étaient effrayés, apeurés; ils étaient comme l’herbe des champs, comme le gazon encore vert, comme la mousse qui pousse sur les toits, comme le grain qui rouille avant de devenir épi.
27 I am aware whether you stand or sit; I know whether you come or go,	27 Mais je sais lorsque tu t’assieds, lorsque tu sors et que tu rentres. Et quand tu te mets en colère contre moi, je le sais encore.
28 and also your rage against me. Because of your rage against me and your fury which has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and make you return the way you came.	28 Eh bien, puisque tu t’es mis en colère contre moi et que ton insolence est montée jusqu’à mes oreilles, je vais passer mon anneau à ta narine, et mon mors à tes lèvres, et je te reconduirai par le chemin par lequel tu es venu.
29 " 'This shall be a sign for you: this year you shall eat the aftergrowth, next year, what grows of itself; But in the third year, sow and reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit!	29 “Maintenant, voici un signe pour toi, Ézékias: cette année on mangera du grain tombé; l’an prochain, le grain qui pousse tout seul, mais la troisième année vous sèmerez et vous moissonnerez; vous planterez des vignes et vous en mangerez le fruit.
30 The remaining survivors of the house of Judah shall again strike root below and bear fruit above.	30 “Les rescapés de la maison de Juda donneront de nouveau des racines en bas et des fruits en haut.
31 For out of Jerusalem shall come a remnant, and from Mount Zion, survivors. The zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.'	31 “Car de Jérusalem sortira un reste et du mont Sion, des survivants. Ce sera l’œuvre de Yahvé Sabaot et de son soin jaloux.
32 "Therefore, thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria: 'He shall not reach this city, nor shoot an arrow at it, nor come before it with a shield, nor cast up siege-works against it.	32 “C’est pourquoi, voici ce que Yahvé dit au sujet du roi d’Assyrie: “Il n’assiégera pas cette ville et il n’y lancera pas de flèches. Il ne dressera pas contre elle le bouclier, il ne fera pas monter un remblai,
33 He shall return by the same way he came, without entering the city, says the LORD.	33 mais il retournera par le chemin par lequel il est venu. Il n’entrera pas dans cette ville. Parole de Yahvé!
34 I will shield and save this city for my own sake, and for the sake of my servant David.'"	34 Je protégerai cette ville et je la sauverai, à cause de moi et de mon serviteur David.”
35 That night the angel of the LORD went forth and struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. Early the next morning, there they were, all the corpses of the dead.	35 Cette même nuit l’ange de Yahvé sortit et frappa dans le camp des Assyriens 185 000 hommes. Le matin, quand on se leva, il n’y avait que des cadavres: tous morts!
36 So Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, broke camp, and went back home to Nineveh.	36 Sennakérib, roi d’Assyrie, partit donc et revint séjourner à Ninive.
37 When he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer slew him with the sword and fled into the land of Ararat. His son Esarhaddon reigned in his stead.	37 Là, pendant qu’il était prosterné dans la Maison de son dieu Nisrok, ses fils Adramélek et Sarécer le frappèrent de leur épée et prirent la fuite au pays d’Ararat. Asarhaddon, son fils, devint roi à sa place.
