NEW AMERICAN BIBLENOVA VULGATA
In the twelfth year of Ahaz, king of Judah, Hoshea, son of Elah, began his nine-year reign over Israel in Samaria.1 Anno duodecimo Achaz regis Iudae regnavit Osee filius Ela in Samaria super Israel novem annis.
He did evil in the sight of the LORD, yet not to the extent of the kings of Israel before him.2 Fecitque malum coram Domino, sed non sicut reges Israel, qui ante eum fuerant.
Shalmaneser, king of Assyria, advanced against him, and Hoshea became his vassal and paid him tribute.3 Contra hunc ascendit Salmanasar rex Assyriorum; et factus est ei Osee servus reddebatque illi tributa.
But the king of Assyria found Hoshea guilty of conspiracy for sending envoys to the king of Egypt at Sais, and for failure to pay the annual tribute to his Assyrian overlord.4 Cumque deprehendisset rex Assyriorum Osee quod rebellare nitens misisset nuntios ad Sua regem Aegypti nec praestaret tributa regi Assyriorum, sicut singulis annis solitus erat, apprehendit eum et vinctum misit in carcerem.
For this, the king of Assyria arrested and imprisoned Hoshea; he then occupied the whole land and attacked Samaria, which he besieged for three years.5 Pervagatusque est omnem terram et ascendens Samariam obsedit eam tribus annis.
In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria took Samaria, and deported the Israelites to Assyria, settling them in Halah, at the Habor, a river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.6 Anno autem nono Osee cepit rex Assyriorum Samariam et transtulit Israel in Assur posuitque eos in Hala et iuxta Habor fluvium Gozan et in civitatibus Medorum.
This came about because the Israelites sinned against the LORD, their God, who had brought them up from the land of Egypt, from under the domination of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and because they venerated other gods.7 Factum est enim hoc, cum peccassent filii Israel Domino Deo suo, qui eduxerat eos de terra Aegypti, de manu pharaonis regis Aegypti: coluerunt deos alienos.
They followed the rites of the nations whom the LORD had cleared out of the way of the Israelites (and the kings of Israel whom they set up).8 Et ambulaverunt iuxta ritus gentium, quas consumpserat Dominus in conspectu filiorum Israel et regum Israel, qui similiter fecerant.
They adopted unlawful practices toward the LORD, their God. They built high places in all their settlements, the watchtowers as well as the walled cities.9 Et offenderunt filii Israel operibus non rectis Dominum Deum suum et aedificaverunt sibi excelsa in cunctis urbibus suis a turre custodum usque ad civitatem munitam.
They set up pillars and sacred poles for themselves on every high hill and under every leafy tree.10 Feceruntque sibi lapides et palos in omni colle sublimi et subter omne lignum nemorosum
There, on all the high places, they burned incense like the nations whom the LORD had sent into exile at their coming. They did evil things that provoked the LORD,11 et adolebant ibi in omnibus excelsis sicut gentes, quas transtulerat Dominus a facie eorum; feceruntque pessima irritantes Dominum
and served idols, although the LORD had told them, "You must not do this."12 et coluerunt idola immunda, de quibus praecepit Dominus eis, ne facerent hoc.
And though the LORD warned Israel and Judah by every prophet and seer, "Give up your evil ways and keep my commandments and statutes, in accordance with the entire law which I enjoined on your fathers and which I sent you by my servants the prophets,"13 Et testificatus est Dominus in Israel et in Iuda per manum omnium prophetarum et videntium dicens: “ Revertimini a viis vestris pessimis et custodite mandata mea et praecepta iuxta omnem legem, quam praecepi patribus vestris, et sicut misi ad vos in manu servorum meorum prophetarum ”.
they did not listen, but were as stiff-necked as their fathers, who had not believed in the LORD, their God.14 Qui non audierunt, sed induraverunt cervicem suam iuxta cervicem patrum suorum, qui noluerunt credere in Dominum Deum suum.
They rejected his statutes, the covenant which he had made with their fathers, and the warnings which he had given them. The vanity they pursued, they themselves became: they followed the surrounding nations whom the LORD had commanded them not to imitate.15 Et abiecerunt legitima eius et pactum, quod pepigit cum patribus eorum, et testificationes, quibus contestatus est eos; secutique sunt vanitates et vani facti sunt et secuti sunt gentes, quae erant per circuitum eorum, super quibus praeceperat Dominus eis ut non facerent, sicut et illae faciebant.
They disregarded all the commandments of the LORD, their God, and made for themselves two molten calves; they also made a sacred pole and worshiped all the host of heaven, and served Baal.16 Et dereliquerunt omnia praecepta Domini Dei sui feceruntque sibi conflatiles duos vitulos et palum et adoraverunt universam militiam caeli servieruntque Baal
They immolated their sons and daughters by fire, practiced fortune-telling and divination, and sold themselves into evil doing in the LORD'S sight, provoking him17 et consecrabant filios suos et filias suas per ignem; et divinationibus inserviebant et auguriis et tradiderunt se, ut facerent malum coram Domino et irritarent eum.
till, in his great anger against Israel, the LORD put them away out of his sight. Only the tribe of Judah was left.18 Iratusque est Dominus vehementer Israel et abstulit eos de conspectu suo, et non remansit nisi tribus Iudae tantummodo.
Even the people of Judah, however, did not keep the commandments of the LORD, their God, but followed the rites practiced by Israel.19 Sed nec ipse Iuda custodivit mandata Domini Dei sui; verum ambulavit in erroribus Israel, quos operatus fuerat.
So the LORD rejected the whole race of Israel. He afflicted them and delivered them over to plunderers, finally casting them out from before him.20 Proiecitque Dominus omne semen Israel et afflixit eos et tradidit in manu diripientium, donec proiceret eos a facie sua,
When he tore Israel away from the house of David, they made Jeroboam, son of Nebat, king; he drove the Israelites away from the LORD, causing them to commit a great sin.21 ex eo iam tempore, quo scissus est Israel a domo David, et constituerunt sibi regem Ieroboam filium Nabat; separavit enim Ieroboam Israel a Domino et peccare eos fecit peccatum magnum.
The Israelites imitated Jeroboam in all the sins he committed, nor would they desist from them.22 Et ambulaverunt filii Israel in universis peccatis Ieroboam, quae fecerat; non recesserunt ab eis,
Finally, the LORD put Israel away out of his sight as he had foretold through all his servants, the prophets; and Israel went into exile from their native soil to Assyria, an exile lasting to the present.23 usquequo auferret Dominus Israel a facie sua, sicut locutus fuerat in manu omnium servorum suorum prophetarum. Translatusque est Israel de terra sua in Assur usque in diem hanc.
The king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, Avva, Hamath, and Sepharvaim, and settled them in the cities of Samaria in place of the Israelites. They took possession of Samaria and dwelt in its cities.24 Adduxit autem rex Assyriorum de Babylone et de Chutha et de Ava et de Emath et de Sepharvaim et collocavit eos in civitatibus Samariae pro filiis Israel, qui possederunt Samariam et habitaverunt in urbibus eius.
When they first settled there, they did not venerate the LORD, so he sent lions among them that killed some of their number.25 Cumque ibi habitare coepissent, non timebant Dominum. Et immisit eis Dominus leones, qui interficiebant inter eos.
A report reached the king of Assyria: "The nations whom you deported and settled in the cities of Samaria do not know how to worship the God of the land, and he has sent lions among them that are killing them, since they do not know how to worship the God of the land."26 Nuntiatumque est regi Assyriorum et dictum: “ Gentes, quas transtulisti et habitare fecisti in civitatibus Samariae, ignorant legitima Dei terrae; et immisit eis leones, et ecce interficiunt eos, eo quod ignorent ritum Dei terrae ”.
The king of Assyria gave the order, "Send back one of the priests whom I deported, to go there and settle, to teach them how to worship the God of the land."27 Praecepit autem rex Assyriorum dicens: “ Ducite illuc unum de sacerdotibus, quos inde captivos adduxistis, et vadat et habitet cum eis et doceat eos legitima Dei terrae ”.
So one of the priests who had been deported from Samaria returned and settled in Bethel, and taught them how to venerate the LORD.28 Igitur cum venisset unus de sacerdotibus his, qui captivi ducti fuerant de Samaria, habitavit in Bethel et docebat eos quomodo colerent Dominum.
But these peoples began to make their own gods in the various cities in which they were living; in the shrines on the high places which the Samarians had made, each people set up gods.29 Et unaquaeque gens fabricata est deum suum; posueruntque eos in fanis excelsis, quae fecerant Samaritae, gens et gens in urbibus suis, in quibus habitabant.
Thus the Babylonians made Marduk and his consort; the men of Cuth made Nergal; the men of Hamath made Ashima;30 Viri enim Babylonii fecerunt Socchothbenoth, viri autem Chutheni fecerunt Nergel, et viri de Emath fecerunt Asima;
the men of Avva made Nibhaz and Tartak; and the men of Sepharvaim immolated their children by fire to their city gods, King Hadad and his consort Anath.31 porro Hevaei fecerunt Nebahaz et Tharthac, hi autem, qui erant de Sepharvaim, comburebant filios suos igne Adramelech et Anamelech diis Sepharvaim.
They also venerated the LORD, choosing from their number priests for the high places, who officiated for them in the shrines on the high places.32 Et nihilominus colebant Dominum. Fecerunt autem sibi de medio ipsorum sacerdotes excelsorum et ponebant eos in fanis excelsorum;
But, while venerating the LORD, they served their own gods, following the worship of the nations from among whom they had been deported.33 et, cum Dominum colerent, diis quoque suis serviebant iuxta consuetudinem gentium, de quibus translati fuerant Samariam.
To this day they worship according to their ancient rites. (They did not venerate the LORD nor observe the statutes and regulations, the law and commandments, which the LORD enjoined on the descendants of Jacob, whom he had named Israel.34 Usque in praesentem diem morem sequuntur antiquum: non timent Dominum neque custodiunt instituta et iudicium ipsorum et legem et mandatum, quod praeceperat Dominus filiis Iacob, quem cognominavit Israel,
When he made a covenant with them, he commanded them: "You must not venerate other gods, nor worship them, nor serve them, nor offer sacrifice to them.35 et percusserat cum eis pactum et mandaverat eis dicens: “ Nolite timere deos alienos et non adoretis eos neque colatis et non immoletis eis,
The LORD, who brought you up from the land of Egypt with great power and outstretched arm: him shall you venerate, him shall you worship, and to him shall you sacrifice.36 sed Dominum, qui eduxit vos de terra Aegypti in fortitudine magna et in brachio extento, ipsum timete, illum adorate et ipsi immolate.
You must be careful to observe forever the statutes and regulations, the law and commandment, which he wrote for you, and you must not venerate other gods.37 Instituta quoque et iudicia et legem et mandatum, quod scripsit vobis, custodite, ut faciatis cunctis diebus; et non timeatis deos alienos.
The covenant which I made with you, you must not forget; you must not venerate other gods.38 Et pactum, quod percussi vobiscum, nolite oblivisci nec timeatis deos alienos,
But the LORD, your God, you must venerate; it is he who will deliver you from the power of all your enemies."39 sed Dominum Deum vestrum timete, et ipse eruet vos de manu omnium inimicorum vestrorum ”.
They did not listen, however, but continued in their earlier manner.)40 Illi vero non audierunt, sed iuxta consuetudinem suam pristinam perpetrabant.
Thus these nations venerated the LORD, but also served their idols. And their sons and grandsons, to this day, are doing as their fathers did.41 Fuerunt igitur gentes istae timentes quidem Dominum, sed nihilominus et idolis suis servientes; nam et filii eorum et nepotes, sicut fecerunt parentes sui, ita faciunt usque in praesentem diem.
