1 Joseph threw himself on his father's face and wept over him as he kissed him.	1 Entonces José se echó sobre el rostro de su padre, lo cubrió de lágrimas y lo besó.
2 Then he ordered the physicians in his service to embalm his father. When they embalmed Israel,	2 Después dio a los médicos que estaban a su servicio la orden de embalsamar a su padre, y los médicos embalsamaron a Israel.
3 they spent forty days at it, for that is the full period of embalming; and the Egyptians mourned him for seventy days.	3 Esto les llevó cuarenta días, porque ese es el tiempo que dura el embalsamamiento. Los egipcios estuvieron de duelo por él durante setenta días.
4 When that period of mourning was over, Joseph spoke to Pharaoh's courtiers. "Please do me this favor," he said, "and convey to Pharaoh this request of mine.	4 Una vez transcurrido ese período, José se dirigió a la corte del Faraón en estos términos: «Por favor, presenten al Faraón el siguiente pedido:
5 Since my father, at the point of death, made me promise on oath to bury him in the tomb that he had prepared for himself in the land of Canaan, may I go up there to bury my father and then come back?"	5 En una oportunidad mi padre me dijo, obligándome bajo juramento: «Cuando yo muera, asegúrate de que me entierren en la tumba que me hice preparar en el país de Canaán. ¿Puedo ir a sepultar a mi padre y luego regresar?».
6 Pharaoh replied, "Go and bury your father, as he made you promise on oath."	6 El Faraón respondió: «Ve a sepultar a tu padre, como él te lo hizo prometer bajo juramento».
7 So Joseph left to bury his father; and with him went all of Pharaoh's officials who were senior members of his court and all the other dignitaries of Egypt,	7 José partió entonces para ir a sepultar a su padre, y con él fueron todos los servidores del Faraón, los ancianos de su palacio y todos los ancianos de Egipto,
8 as well as Joseph's whole household, his brothers, and his father's household; only their children and their flocks and herds were left in the region of Goshen.	8 lo mismo que la familia de José, sus hermanos y la familia de su padre. En la región de Gosen dejaron únicamente a los niños y el ganado.
9 Chariots, too, and charioteers went up with him; it was a very large retinue.	9 También fueron con él carros de guerra y jinetes, de manera que se formó un cortejo imponente.
10 When they arrived at Goren-ha-atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they held there a very great and solemn memorial service; and Joseph observed seven days of mourning for his father.	10 Al llegar a Goren Haatad, que está al otro lado del Jordán, celebraron las exequias con gran solemnidad, y José estuvo de duelo por su padre durante siete días.
11 When the Canaanites who inhabited the land saw the mourning at Goren-ha-atad, they said, "This is a solemn funeral the Egyptians are having." That is why the place was named Abel-mizraim. It is beyond the Jordan.	11 Los cananeos, habitantes del país, al ver los funerales de Goren Haatad, dijeron: «Este es un funeral solemne de los egipcios». Por eso aquel lugar, que se encuentra al otro lado del Jordán, se llamó Abel Misraim.
12 Thus Jacob's sons did for him as he had instructed them.	12 Los hijos de Jacob hicieron con él todo lo que les había mandado:
13 They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, facing on Mamre, the field that Abraham had bought for a burial ground from Ephron the Hittite.	13 lo trasladaron a Canaán y lo sepultaron en el campo de Macpelá, frente a Mamré, el campo que Abraham había comprado a Efrón, el hitita, para tenerlo como sepulcro familiar.
14 After Joseph had buried his father he returned to Egypt, together with his brothers and all who had gone up with him for the burial of his father.	14 Y después de sepultar a su padre, José regresó a Egipto en compañía de sus hermanos y de todos los que habían ido a dar sepultura a su padre.
15 Now that their father was dead, Joseph's brothers became fearful and thought, "Suppose Joseph has been nursing a grudge against us and now plans to pay us back in full for all the wrong we did him!"	15 Al ver que su padre había muerto, los hermanos de José se dijeron: «¿Y si José nos guarda rencor y nos devuelve todo el mal que le hicimos?».
16 So they approached Joseph and said: "Before your father died, he gave us these instructions:	16 Por eso le enviaron este mensaje: «Antes de morir, tu padre dejó esta orden:
17 'You shall say to Joseph, Jacob begs you to forgive the criminal wrongdoing of your brothers, who treated you so cruelly.' Please, therefore, forgive the crime that we, the servants of your father's God, committed." When they spoke these words to him, Joseph broke into tears.	17 «Díganle a José: Perdona el crimen y el pecado de tus hermanos, que te hicieron tanto mal. Por eso, perdona el crimen de los servidores del Dios de tu padre». Al oír estas palabras, José se puso a llorar.
18 Then his brothers proceeded to fling themselves down before him and said, "Let us be your slaves!"	18 Luego sus hermanos fueron personalmente, se postraron ante él y le dijeron: «Aquí nos tienes: somos tus esclavos».
19 But Joseph replied to them: "Have no fear. Can I take the place of God?	19 Pero José les respondió: «No tengan miedo. ¿Acaso yo puedo hacer las veces de Dios?
20 Even though you meant harm to me, God meant it for good, to achieve his present end, the survival of many people.	20 El designio de Dios ha transformado en bien el mal que ustedes pensaron hacerme, a fin de cumplir lo que hoy se realiza: salvar la vida a un pueblo numeroso.
21 Therefore have no fear. I will provide for you and for your children." By thus speaking kindly to them, he reassured them.	21 Por eso, no teman. Yo velaré por ustedes y por las personas que están a su cargo». Y los reconfortó, hablándoles afectuosamente.
22 Joseph remained in Egypt, together with his father's family. He lived a hundred and ten years.	22 José permaneció en Egipto junto con la familia de su padre, y vivió ciento diez años.
23 He saw Ephraim's children to the third generation, and the children of Manasseh's son Machir were also born on Joseph's knees.	23 Así pudo ver a los hijos de Efraím hasta la tercera generación; y los hijos de Maquir, hijo de Manasés, también nacieron sobre las rodillas de José.
24 Joseph said to his brothers: "I am about to die. God will surely take care of you and lead you out of this land to the land that he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob."	24 Finalmente, José dijo a sus hermanos: «Yo estoy a punto de morir, pero Dios los visitará y los llevará de este país a la tierra que prometió con un juramento a Abraham, a Isaac y a Jacob».
25 Then, putting the sons of Israel under oath, he continued, "When God thus takes care of you, you must bring my bones up with you from this place."	25 Luego hizo prestar un juramento a los hijos de Israel, diciéndoles: «Cuando Dios los visite, lleven de aquí mis restos».
26 Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten. He was embalmed and laid to rest in a coffin in Egypt.	26 José murió a la edad de ciento diez años. Fue embalsamado y colocado en un sarcófago, en Egipto.
