1 Early the next morning, Laban kissed his grandchildren and his daughters goodbye; then he set out on his journey back home,	1 Laban se leva de bon matin, il embrassa ses fils et ses filles, les bénit et s’en retourna. C’est ainsi que Laban retourna chez lui.
2 while Jacob continued on his own way. Then God's messengers encountered Jacob.	2 Jacob continua son chemin et les anges de Dieu le rencontrèrent.
3 When he saw them he said, "This is God's encampment." So he named that place Mahanaim.	3 Lorsqu’il les vit, Jacob s’écria: “C’est un camp de Dieu!” C’est pourquoi il donna à cet endroit le nom de Double Camp.
4 Jacob sent messengers ahead to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom,	4 Jacob envoya des messagers devant lui vers son frère Ésaü, à Séïr dans la campagne d’Édom.
5 with this message: "Thus shall you say to my lord Esau: 'Your servant Jacob speaks as follows: I have been staying with Laban and have been detained there until now.	5 Il leur donna cet ordre: “Vous parlerez ainsi à mon seigneur Ésaü: Voici ce que ton serviteur Jacob te fait dire: J’ai séjourné chez Laban et je m’y suis attardé jusqu’à maintenant.
6 I own cattle, asses and sheep, as well as male and female servants. I am sending my lord this information in the hope of gaining your favor.'"	6 J’y ai acquis des bœufs et des ânes, du petit bétail, des serviteurs et des servantes. J’ai donc envoyé mes gens pour te l’annoncer et trouver ainsi grâce à tes yeux.”
7 When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, "We reached your brother Esau. He is now coming to meet you, accompanied by four hundred men."	7 Les messagers revinrent vers Jacob en disant: “Nous avons rejoint ton frère Ésaü; il marche à ta rencontre avec 400 hommes.”
8 Jacob was very much frightened. In his anxiety, he divided the people who were with him, as well as his flocks, herds and camels, into two camps.	8 Jacob eut alors très peur et il fut saisi d’angoisse. Il partagea en deux camps les gens qui étaient avec lui, ainsi que le petit et le gros bétail; il fit de même pour les chameaux.
9 "If Esau should attack and overwhelm one camp," he reasoned, "the remaining camp may still survive."	9 Car il se disait: “Si Ésaü rejoint un camp et l’attaque, l’autre pourra s’échapper.”
10 Then he prayed: "O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac! You told me, O LORD, 'Go back to the land of your birth, and I will be good to you.'	10 Jacob dit alors: “Dieu de mon père Abraham et Dieu de mon père Isaac, ô Yahvé, toi qui m’as dit: Retourne dans ton pays et dans ta patrie et je te ferai du bien,
11 I am unworthy of all the acts of kindness that you have loyally performed for your servant: although I crossed the Jordan here with nothing but my staff, I have now grown into two companies.	11 je suis trop peu de chose pour mériter toutes tes faveurs et toute la fidélité que tu as montrées à ton serviteur. Je n’avais en effet que ce bâton lorsque j’ai traversé ce Jourdain, et maintenant, j’ai de quoi former deux camps.
12 Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau! Otherwise I fear that when he comes he will strike me down and slay the mothers and children.	12 Délivre-moi de la main de mon frère, de la main d’Ésaü, car j’ai peur qu’il ne vienne et nous frappe, la mère avec les enfants.
13 You yourself said, 'I will be very good to you, and I will make your descendants like the sands of the sea, which are too numerous to count.'"	13 Or c’est toi qui m’as dit: Je te ferai du bien et je rendrai ta descendance comme le sable de la mer: le nombre en sera tel qu’on ne pourra le compter.”
14 After passing the night there, Jacob selected from what he had with him the following presents for his brother Esau:	14 Et Jacob passa la nuit en cet endroit. Jacob prit sur ses biens de quoi faire un cadeau à son frère Ésaü:
15 two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats; two hundred ewes and twenty rams;	15 200 chèvres et 20 boucs, 200 brebis et 20 béliers,
16 thirty milch camels and their young; forty cows and ten bulls; twenty she-asses and ten he-asses.	16 30 chamelles qui allaitaient, avec leurs petits, 40 vaches et 10 taureaux, 20 ânesses et 10 ânons.
17 He put these animals in charge of his servants, in separate droves, and he told the servants, "Go on ahead of me, but keep a space between one drove and the next."	17 Il confia chaque troupeau séparément à l’un de ses serviteurs, puis il leur dit: “Passez devant moi et laissez un espace après chaque troupeau.”
18 To the servant in the lead he gave this instruction: "When my brother Esau meets you, he may ask you, 'Whose man are you? Where are you going? To whom do these animals ahead of you belong?'	18 Au premier il donna cet ordre: “Quand mon frère Ésaü te rencontrera, il te posera la question: À qui appartiens-tu et où vas-tu? À qui appartient ce que tu as là?
19 Then you shall answer, 'They belong to your brother Jacob, but they have been sent as a gift to my lord Esau; and Jacob himself is right behind us.'"	19 Alors tu répondras: Tout appartient à ton serviteur Jacob. C’est un cadeau qu’il envoie à mon seigneur Ésaü, lui-même arrive derrière nous.”
20 He gave similar instructions to the second servant and the third and to all the others who followed behind the droves, namely: "Thus and thus shall you say to Esau, when you reach him;	20 Il donna également ses instructions au deuxième, puis au troisième, bref, à tous ceux qui accompagnaient les troupeaux. Il leur disait: “Voilà comment vous parlerez à Ésaü quand vous le rencontrerez,
21 and be sure to add, 'Your servant Jacob is right behind us.'" For Jacob reasoned, "If I first appease him with gifts that precede me, then later, when I face him, perhaps he will forgive me."	21 vous lui direz: Ton serviteur Jacob arrive tout de suite derrière nous.” Il pensait en effet: “Le cadeau que j’envoie devant moi l’apaisera et je pourrai alors le regarder en face. Peut-être me fera-t-il bon accueil.”
22 So the gifts went on ahead of him, while he stayed that night in the camp.	22 Il envoya donc le cadeau en avant de lui. Quant à lui, il passa cette nuit-là dans le camp.
23 In the course of that night, however, Jacob arose, took his two wives, with the two maidservants and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.	23 Durant la nuit il alla prendre ses deux femmes et ses deux servantes ainsi que les onze enfants pour passer le gué du Yabok.
24 After he had taken them across the stream and had brought over all his possessions,	24 Après les avoir pris et leur avoir fait passer le torrent, il fit passer tout ce qu’il avait.
25 Jacob was left there alone. Then some man wrestled with him until the break of dawn.	25 Et Jacob resta seul. Quelqu’un lutta avec lui jusqu’au lever du jour.
26 When the man saw that he could not prevail over him, he struck Jacob's hip at its socket, so that the hip socket was wrenched as they wrestled.	26 Voyant qu’il ne pouvait dominer Jacob, il le toucha à l’articulation de la hanche, et la hanche de Jacob se démit tandis qu’il luttait avec lui.
27 The man then said, "Let me go, for it is daybreak." But Jacob said, "I will not let you go until you bless me."	27 L’autre lui dit: “Laisse-moi partir, car le jour se lève.” Mais Jacob répondit: “Je ne te laisserai pas partir avant que tu ne m’aies donné la bénédiction.”
28 "What is your name?" the man asked. He answered, "Jacob."	28 L’autre lui dit: “Quel est ton nom?” Il répondit: “Jacob.”
29 Then the man said, "You shall no longer be spoken of as Jacob, but as Israel, because you have contended with divine and human beings and have prevailed."	29 L’autre lui dit: “On ne t’appellera plus Jacob, mais Israël, car tu as lutté avec Dieu comme avec les hommes, et tu as eu le dessus.”
30 Jacob then asked him, "Do tell me your name, please." He answered, "Why should you want to know my name?" With that, he bade him farewell.	30 Jacob l’interrogea et lui dit: “Révèle-moi ton nom.” Il répondit: “Pourquoi demandes-tu mon nom?” Mais là, il le bénit.
31 Jacob named the place Peniel, "Because I have seen God face to face," he said, "yet my life has been spared."	31 Jacob donna à ce lieu le nom de Pénuel car, dit-il: “J’ai vu Dieu face à face et j’ai eu la vie sauve.”
32 At sunrise, as he left Penuel, Jacob limped along because of his hip.	32 Le soleil était déjà haut quand il passa Pénuel, et lui allait, boitant de la hanche.
33 That is why, to this day, the Israelites do not eat the sciatic muscle that is on the hip socket, inasmuch as Jacob's hip socket was struck at the sciatic muscle.	33 C’est pourquoi les fils d’Israël ne mangent pas jusqu’à ce jour le nerf sciatique qui est à l’articulation de la hanche, car c’est à l’articulation de la hanche que Jacob fut touché, au nerf sciatique.
