NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 After Jacob resumed his journey, he came to the land of the Easterners.	1 Jacob reanudó la marcha y se fue al país de los Orientales.
2 Looking about, he saw a well in the open country, with three droves of sheep huddled near it, for droves were watered from that well. A large stone covered the mouth of the well.	2 Allí vio un pozo en medio del campo, junto al cual estaban tendidos tres rebaños de ovejas, porque en ese pozo daban de beber al ganado. La piedra que cubría la boca del pozo era muy grande.
3 Only when all the shepherds were assembled there could they roll the stone away from the mouth of the well and water the flocks. Then they would put the stone back again over the mouth of the well.	3 Solamente cuando estaban reunidos todos los pastores, podían correrla para dar de beber a los animales. Luego la volvían a poner en su lugar, sobre la boca del pozo.
4 Jacob said to them, "Friends, where are you from?" "We are from Haran," they replied.	4 Jacob dijo a los pastores: «Hermanos, ¿de dónde son ustedes?». «Somos de Jarán», respondieron.
5 Then he asked them, "Do you know Laban, son of Nahor?" "We do," they answered.	5 El añadió: «¿Conocen a Labán, hijo de Najor?». «Sí», dijeron ellos.
6 He inquired further, "Is he well?" "He is," they answered; "and here comes his daughter Rachel with his flock."	6 El volvió a preguntarles: «¿Se encuentra bien?». «Muy bien», le respondieron. «Precisamente, ahí viene su hija Raquel con el rebaño».
7 Then he said: "There is still much daylight left; it is hardly the time to bring the animals home. Why don't you water the flocks now, and then continue pasturing them?"	7 Entonces él les dijo: «Aún es pleno día; todavía no es hora de entrar los animales. ¿Por qué no les dan de beber y los llevan a pastar?».
8 "We cannot," they replied, "until all the shepherds are here to roll the stone away from the mouth of the well; only then can we water the flocks."	8 «No podemos hacerlo, dijeron ellos, hasta que no se reúnan todos los pastores y hagan rodar la piedra que está sobre la boca del pozo. Sólo entonces podremos dar de beber a los animales».
9 While he was still talking with them, Rachel arrived with her father's sheep; she was the one who tended them.	9 Todavía estaba hablando con ellos, cuando llegó Raquel, que era pastora, con el rebaño de su padre.
10 As soon as Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of his uncle Laban, with the sheep of his uncle Laban, he went up, rolled the stone away from the mouth of the well, and watered his uncle's sheep.	10 Apenas Jacob vio a Raquel, la hija de su tío Labán, que traía el rebaño, se adelantó, hizo rodar la piedra que cubría la boca del pozo, y dio de beber a las ovejas de su tío.
11 Then Jacob kissed Rachel and burst into tears.	11 Después besó a Raquel y lloró de emoción.
12 He told her that he was her father's relative, Rebekah's son, and she ran to tell her father.	12 Entonces le contó que él era pariente de Labán –por ser hijo de Rebeca– y ella fue corriendo a comunicar la noticia a su padre.
13 When Laban heard the news about his sister's son Jacob, he hurried out to meet him. After embracing and kissing him, he brought him to his house. Jacob then recounted to Laban all that had happened,	13 Labán, por su parte, al oír que se trataba de Jacob, el hijo de su hermana, corrió a saludarlo; lo abrazó, lo besó y lo llevó a su casa. Y cuando Jacob le contó todo lo que había sucedido,
14 and Laban said to him, "You are indeed my flesh and blood." After Jacob had stayed with him a full month,	14 Labán le dijo: «Realmente, tú eres de mi misma sangre».
15 Laban said to him: "Should you serve me for nothing just because you are a relative of mine? Tell me what your wages should be."	15 este le dijo: «¿Acaso porque eres pariente mío me vas a servir gratuitamente? Indícame cuál debe ser tu salario».
16 Now Laban had two daughters; the older was called Leah, the younger Rachel.	16 Ahora bien, Labán tenía dos hijas: la mayor se llamaba Lía, y la menor, Raquel.
17 Leah had lovely eyes, but Rachel was well formed and beautiful.	17 Lía tenía una mirada tierna, pero Raquel tenía una linda silueta y era muy hermosa.
18 Since Jacob had fallen in love with Rachel, he answered Laban, "I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel."	18 Y como Jacob se había enamorado de Raquel, respondió: «Te serviré durante siete años, si me das por esposa a Raquel, tu hija menor».
19 Laban replied, "I prefer to give her to you rather than to an outsider. Stay with me."	19 «Mejor es dártela a ti que a un extraño», asintió Labán. «Quédate conmigo».
20 So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, yet they seemed to him but a few days because of his love for her.	20 Y Jacob trabajó siete años para poder casarse con Raquel, pero le parecieron unos pocos días, por el gran amor que le tenía.
21 Then Jacob said to Laban, "Give me my wife, that I may consummate my marriage with her, for my term is now completed."	21 Después Jacob dijo a Labán: «Dame a mi esposa para que pueda unirme con ella, por el plazo ya se ha cumplido».
22 So Laban invited all the local inhabitants and gave a feast.	22 Labán reunió a toda la gente del lugar e hizo una fiesta.
23 At nightfall he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob consummated the marriage with her.	23 Pero al anochecer, tomó a su hija Lía y se la entregó a Jacob. Y Jacob se unió a ella.
24 (Laban assigned his slave girl Zilpah to his daughter Leah as her maidservant.)	24 Además, Labán destinó a su esclava Zilpá, para que fuera sirvienta de su hija Lía.
25 In the morning Jacob was amazed: it was Leah! So he cried out to Laban: "How could you do this to me! Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why did you dupe me?"	25 A la mañana siguiente, Jacob reconoció a Lía. Entonces dijo a Labán: «¿Qué me has hecho? ¿Acaso yo no te serví para poder casarme con Raquel? ¿Por qué me engañaste?».
26 "It is not the custom in our country," Laban replied, "to marry off a younger daughter before an older one.	26 Pero Labán le respondió: «En nuestro país no se acostumbra a casar a la menor antes que a la mayor.
27 Finish the bridal week for this one, and then I will give you the other too, in return for another seven years of service with me."	27 Por eso, espera que termine la semana de esta fiesta nupcial, y después te daré también a Raquel, como pago por los servicios que me prestarás durante otros siete años».
28 Jacob agreed. He finished the bridal week for Leah, and then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel in marriage.	28 Jacob estuvo de acuerdo: esperó que concluyera esa semana, y después, Labán le dio como esposa a su hija Raquel.
29 (Laban assigned his slave girl Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her maidservant.)	29 Además, Labán destinó a su esclava Bilhá, para que fuera sirvienta de su hija Raquel.
30 Jacob then consummated his marriage with Rachel also, and he loved her more than Leah. Thus he remained in Laban's service another seven years.	30 Jacob se unió a ella, y la amó más que a Lía. Y estuvo al servicio de Labán siete años más.
31 When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, he made her fruitful, while Rachel remained barren.	31 Cuando el Señor vio que Lía no era amada, la hizo fecunda, mientras que Raquel permaneció estéril.
32 Leah conceived and bore a son, and she named him Reuben; for she said, "It means, 'The LORD saw my misery; now my husband will love me.'"	32 Lía concibió y dio a luz un hijo, al que llamó Rubén, porque dijo: «El Señor ha visto mi aflicción; ahora sí que mi esposo me amará».
33 She conceived again and bore a son, and said, "It means, 'The LORD heard that I was unloved,' and therefore he has given me this one also"; so she named him Simeon.	33 Luego volvió a concebir, y tuvo otro hijo. Entonces exclamó: «El Señor se dio cuenta de que yo no era amada, y por eso me dio también a este». Y lo llamó Simeón.
34 Again she conceived and bore a son, and she said, "Now at last my husband will become attached to me, since I have now borne him three sons"; that is why she named him Levi.	34 Después concibió una vez más, y cuando dio a luz, dijo: «Ahora mi marido sentirá afecto por mí, porque le he dado tres hijos». Por eso lo llamó Leví.
35 Once more she conceived and bore a son, and she said, "This time I will give grateful praise to the LORD"; therefore she named him Judah. Then she stopped bearing children.	35 Finalmente, volvió a concebir y a tener un hijo. Entonces exclamó: «Esta vez alabaré al Señor», y lo llamó Judá. Después dejó de tener hijos.
