NEW AMERICAN BIBLEBIBLES DES PEUPLES
After Jacob resumed his journey, he came to the land of the Easterners.1 Jacob se mit en route et s’en alla au pays d’Orient.
Looking about, he saw a well in the open country, with three droves of sheep huddled near it, for droves were watered from that well.
Only when all the shepherds were assembled there could they roll the stone away from the mouth of the well and water the flocks. Then they would put the stone back again over the mouth of the well.3 Quand tous les troupeaux y étaient rassemblés, on roulait la pierre de dessus l’ouverture du puits, on donnait à boire au petit bétail, et puis l’on remettait la pierre en place sur l’ouverture du puits.
Jacob said to them, "Friends, where are you from?" "We are from Haran," they replied.4 Jacob dit aux bergers: “D’où êtes-vous, mes frères?” Ils répondirent: “Nous sommes de Harrân.”
Then he asked them, "Do you know Laban, son of Nahor?" "We do," they answered.5 Il leur dit: “Connaissez-vous Laban, le fils de Nahor?” Ils répondirent: “Nous le connaissons bien.”
He inquired further, "Is he well?" "He is," they answered; "and here comes his daughter Rachel with his flock."6 Jacob leur dit: “Est-il en bonne santé?” “Il est en bonne santé, répondirent-ils, voici d’ailleurs Rachel, sa fille, qui arrive avec le petit bétail.”
Then he said: "There is still much daylight left; it is hardly the time to bring the animals home. Why don't you water the flocks now, and then continue pasturing them?"7 Jacob leur dit: “Il fait encore grand jour, ce n’est pas l’heure de rassembler les bêtes. Donnez-leur à boire et emmenez-les pour paître.”
"We cannot," they replied, "until all the shepherds are here to roll the stone away from the mouth of the well; only then can we water the flocks."8 Les bergers répondirent: “Nous ne pouvons pas avant que tous les troupeaux soient rassemblés. Alors on roule la pierre de dessus l’ouverture du puits et on donne à boire au petit bétail.”
While he was still talking with them, Rachel arrived with her father's sheep; she was the one who tended them.9 Jacob parlait encore, lorsque Rachel arriva avec le petit bétail de son père: elle était bergère.
As soon as Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of his uncle Laban, with the sheep of his uncle Laban, he went up, rolled the stone away from the mouth of the well, and watered his uncle's sheep.10 Dès que Jacob vit Rachel, la fille de son oncle Laban, avec le petit bétail de Laban, il s’approcha du puits, roula la pierre qui le couvrait et donna à boire au petit bétail de son oncle Laban.
Then Jacob kissed Rachel and burst into tears.11 Ensuite il embrassa Rachel et pleura abondamment.
He told her that he was her father's relative, Rebekah's son, and she ran to tell her father.12 Jacob apprit à Rachel qu’il était de la parenté de son père, et le fils de Rébecca. Aussitôt celle-ci courut l’annoncer à son père.
When Laban heard the news about his sister's son Jacob, he hurried out to meet him. After embracing and kissing him, he brought him to his house.
and Laban said to him, "You are indeed my flesh and blood." After Jacob had stayed with him a full month,14 Laban lui dit: “En vérité tu es de mes os et de ma chair.” Jacob resta chez lui tout un mois.
Laban said to him: "Should you serve me for nothing just because you are a relative of mine? Tell me what your wages should be."15 Laban dit alors à Jacob: “Ce n’est pas parce que tu es mon frère que tu vas travailler chez moi pour rien. Quel salaire me demandes-tu?”
Now Laban had two daughters; the older was called Leah, the younger Rachel.16 Laban avait deux filles.
Leah had lovely eyes, but Rachel was well formed and beautiful.17 Léa avait des yeux sans éclat, alors que Rachel avait belle allure et beau visage.
Since Jacob had fallen in love with Rachel, he answered Laban, "I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel."18 Jacob aimait Rachel, il répondit: “Je te servirai sept ans pour Rachel, ta seconde fille.”
Laban replied, "I prefer to give her to you rather than to an outsider. Stay with me."19 Laban lui répondit: “J’aime mieux te la donner à toi que de la donner à quelqu’un d’autre. Reste chez moi.”
So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, yet they seemed to him but a few days because of his love for her.20 Jacob travailla donc pour Rachel pendant sept ans qui ne lui parurent que quelques jours, tellement il l’aimait.
Then Jacob said to Laban, "Give me my wife, that I may consummate my marriage with her, for my term is now completed."21 Au bout de ce temps Jacob dit à Laban: “Donne-moi ma femme puisque je t’ai servi le temps que je devais. Maintenant, je veux coucher avec elle.”
So Laban invited all the local inhabitants and gave a feast.22 Laban invita donc tous les hommes de l’endroit et donna un grand repas.
At nightfall he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob consummated the marriage with her.23 Mais lorsque la nuit fut venue, il prit sa fille Léa et la conduisit vers Jacob qui s’unit à elle.
(Laban assigned his slave girl Zilpah to his daughter Leah as her maidservant.)24 Laban donna alors comme servante à sa fille Léa, sa propre servante Zilpa.
In the morning Jacob was amazed: it was Leah! So he cried out to Laban: "How could you do this to me! Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why did you dupe me?"25 Au matin, Jacob s’aperçut que c’était Léa.
"It is not the custom in our country," Laban replied, "to marry off a younger daughter before an older one.26 Laban lui répondit: “Cela ne se fait pas chez nous de marier la plus jeune avant l’aînée.
Finish the bridal week for this one, and then I will give you the other too, in return for another seven years of service with me."27 Terminons cette semaine de noces et nous te donnerons aussi celle-là, mais dans ce cas tu travailleras encore sept ans chez moi.”
Jacob agreed. He finished the bridal week for Leah, and then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel in marriage.28 C’est ce que fit Jacob.
(Laban assigned his slave girl Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her maidservant.)29 Laban donna alors comme servante à sa fille Rachel, Bila, sa propre servante.
Jacob then consummated his marriage with Rachel also, and he loved her more than Leah.
When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, he made her fruitful, while Rachel remained barren.31 Yahvé vit que Léa était délaissée, et il la rendit féconde alors que Rachel était stérile.
Leah conceived and bore a son, and she named him Reuben; for she said, "It means, 'The LORD saw my misery; now my husband will love me.'"32 Léa fut enceinte et donna le jour à un fils qu’elle appela Ruben; car elle disait: “Yahvé a eu pitié de mon humiliation, maintenant mon mari m’aimera.”
She conceived again and bore a son, and said, "It means, 'The LORD heard that I was unloved,' and therefore he has given me this one also"; so she named him Simeon.33 Elle fut encore enceinte et donna le jour à un fils.
Again she conceived and bore a son, and she said, "Now at last my husband will become attached to me, since I have now borne him three sons"; that is why she named him Levi.34 Elle fut encore enceinte et donna le jour à un fils. “Cette fois, dit-elle, mon mari s’attachera à moi, car je lui ai donné trois fils.” Aussi on donna à l’enfant le nom de Lévi.
Once more she conceived and bore a son, and she said, "This time I will give grateful praise to the LORD"; therefore she named him Judah.
