Genesis 24

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Abraham had now reached a ripe old age, and the LORD had blessed him in every way.	1 Abraham était alors un vieillard avancé en âge, et Yahvé avait béni Abraham en tout.
2 Abraham said to the senior servant of his household, who had charge of all his possessions: "Put your hand under my thigh,	2 Abraham dit au plus vieux serviteur de sa maison, le régisseur de tous ses biens: "Mets ta mainsous ma cuisse.
3 and I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not procure a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites among whom I live,	3 Je te fais jurer par Yahvé, le Dieu du ciel et de la terre, que tu ne prendras pas pour mon fils unefemme parmi les filles des Cananéens au milieu desquels j'habite.
4 but that you will go to my own land and to my kindred to get a wife for my son Isaac."	4 Mais tu iras dans mon pays, dans ma parenté, et tu choisiras une femme pour mon fils Isaac."
5 The servant asked him: "What if the woman is unwilling to follow me to this land? Should I then take your son back to the land from which you migrated?"	5 Le serviteur lui demanda: "Peut-être la femme ne voudra-t-elle pas me suivre dans ce pays-ci:faudra-t-il que je ramène ton fils dans le pays d'où tu es sorti?"
6 "Never take my son back there for any reason," Abraham told him.	6 Abraham lui répondit: "Garde-toi bien de ramener mon fils là-bas.
7 "The LORD, the God of heaven, who took me from my father's house and the land of my kin, and who confirmed by oath the promise he then made to me, 'I will give this land to your descendants'--he will send his messenger before you, and you will obtain a wife for my son there.	7 Yahvé, le Dieu du ciel et le Dieu de la terre, qui m'a pris de ma maison paternelle et du pays de maparenté, qui m'a dit et qui m'a juré qu'il donnerait ce pays-ci à ma descendance, Yahvé enverra son Ange devanttoi, pour que tu prennes une femme de là-bas pour mon fils.
8 If the woman is unwilling to follow you, you will be released from this oath. But never take my son back there!"	8 Et si la femme ne veut pas te suivre, tu seras quitte du serment que je t'impose. En tout cas, neramène pas mon fils là-bas."
9 So the servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham and swore to him in this undertaking.	9 Le serviteur mit sa main sous la cuisse de son maître Abraham et il lui prêta serment pour cetteaffaire.
10 The servant then took ten of his master's camels, and bearing all kinds of gifts from his master, he made his way to the city of Nahor in Aram Naharaim.	10 Le serviteur prit dix des chameaux de son maître et, emportant de tout ce que son maître avait debon, il se mit en route pour l'Aram Naharayim, pour la ville de Nahor.
11 Near evening, at the time when women go out to draw water, he made the camels kneel by the well outside the city.	11 Il fit agenouiller les chameaux en dehors de la ville, près du puits, à l'heure du soir, à l'heure oùles femmes sortent pourpuiser.
12 Then he prayed: "LORD, God of my master Abraham, let it turn out favorably for me today and thus deal graciously with my master Abraham.	12 Et il dit: "Yahvé, Dieu de mon maître Abraham, sois-moi propice aujourd'hui et montre tabienveillance pour mon maître Abraham!
13 While I stand here at the spring and the daughters of the townsmen are coming out to draw water,	13 Je me tiens près de la source et les filles des gens de la ville sortent pour puiser de l'eau.
14 if I say to a girl, 'Please lower your jug, that I may drink,' and she answers, 'Take a drink, and let me give water to your camels, too,' let her be the one whom you have decided upon for your servant Isaac. In this way I shall know that you have dealt graciously with my master."	14 "La jeune fille à qui je dirai: Incline donc ta cruche, que je boive et qui répondra: Bois etj'abreuverai aussi tes chameaux, ce sera celle que tu as destinée à ton serviteur Isaac, et je connaîtrai à cela que tuas montré ta bienveillance pour mon maître."
15 He had scarcely finished these words when Rebekah (who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor) came out with a jug on her shoulder.	15 Il n'avait pas fini de parler que sortait Rébecca, qui était fille de Bétuel, fils de Milka, la femme deNahor, frère d'Abraham, et elle avait sa cruche sur l'épaule.
16 The girl was very beautiful, a virgin, untouched by man. She went down to the spring and filled her jug. As she came up,	16 La jeune fille était très belle, elle était vierge, aucun homme ne l'avait approchée. Elle descendit àla source, emplit sa cruche et remonta.
17 the servant ran toward her and said, "Please give me a sip of water from your jug."	17 Le serviteur courut au-devant d'elle et dit: "S'il te plaît, laisse-moi boire un peu d'eau de tacruche."
18 "Take a drink, sir," she replied, and quickly lowering the jug onto her hand, she gave him a drink.	18 Elle répondit: "Bois, Monseigneur" et vite elle abaissa sa cruche sur son bras et le fit boire.
19 When she had let him drink his fill, she said, "I will draw water for your camels, too, until they have drunk their fill."	19 Quand elle eut fini de lui donner à boire, elle dit: "Je vais puiser aussi pour tes chameaux, jusqu'àce qu'ils soientdésaltérés."
20 With that, she quickly emptied her jug into the drinking trough and ran back to the well to draw more water, until she had drawn enough for all the camels.	20 Vite elle vida sa cruche dans l'auge, courut encore au puits pour puiser et puisa pour tous leschameaux.
21 The man watched her the whole time, silently waiting to learn whether or not the LORD had made his errand successful.	21 L'homme la considérait en silence, se demandant si Yahvé l'avait ou non mené au but.
22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold ring weighing half a shekel, which he fastened on her nose, and two gold bracelets weighing ten shekels, which he put on her wrists.	22 Lorsque les chameaux eurent fini de boire, l'homme prit un anneau d'or pesant un demi-sicle, qu'ilmit à ses narines, et, à ses bras, deux bracelets pesant dix sicles d'or,
23 Then he asked her: "Whose daughter are you? Tell me, please. And is there room in your father's house for us to spend the night?"	23 et il dit: "De qui es-tu la fille? Apprends-le moi, je te prie. Y a-t-il de la place chez ton père pourque nous passions la nuit?"
24 She answered: "I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.	24 Elle répondit: "Je suis la fille de Bétuel, le fils que Milkaa enfanté à Nahor"
25 There is plenty of straw and fodder at our place," she added, "and room to spend the night."	25 et elle continua: "Il y a, chez nous, de la paille et du fourrage en quantité, et de la place pourgîter."
26 The man then bowed down in worship to the LORD,	26 Alors l'homme se prosterna et adora Yahvé,
27 saying: "Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not let his constant kindness toward my master fail. As for myself also, the LORD has led me straight to the house of my master's brother."	27 et il dit: "Béni soit Yahvé, Dieu de mon maître Abraham, qui n'a pas ménagé sa bienveillance etsa bonté à mon maître. Yahvé a guidé mes pas chez le frère de mon maître!"
28 Then the girl ran off and told her mother's household about it.	28 La jeune fille courut annoncer chez sa mère ce qui était arrivé.
29 Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban.	29 Or Rébecca avait un frère qui s'appelait Laban, et Laban courut au-dehors vers l'homme, à lasource.
30 As soon as he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister Rebekah and heard her words about what the man had said to her, Laban rushed outside to the man at the spring. When he reached him, he was still standing by the camels at the spring.	30 Dès qu'il eut vu l'anneau et les bracelets que portait sa sœur et qu'il eut entendu sa sœur Rébeccadire: "Voilà comment cet homme m'a parlé", il alla vers l'homme et le trouva encore debout près des chameaux,à la source.
31 So he said to him: "Come, blessed of the LORD! Why are you staying outside when I have made the house ready for you, as well as a place for the camels?"	31 Il lui dit: "Viens, béni de Yahvé! Pourquoi restes-tu dehors, quand j'ai débarrassé la maison et faitde la place pour les chameaux?"
32 The man then went inside; and while the camels were being unloaded and provided with straw and fodder, water was brought to bathe his feet and the feet of the men who were with him.	32 L'homme vint à la maison et Laban débâta les chameaux, il donna de la paille et du fourrage auxchameaux et, pour lui et les hommes qui l'accompagnaient, de l'eau pour se laver les pieds.
33 But when the table was set for him, he said, "I will not eat until I have told my tale." "Do so," they replied.	33 On lui présenta à manger, mais il dit: "Je ne mangerai pas avant d'avoir dit ce que j'ai à dire", etLaban répondit: "Parle."
34 "I am Abraham's servant," he began.	34 Il dit: "Je suis le serviteur d'Abraham.
35 "The LORD has blessed my master so abundantly that he has become a wealthy man; he has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male and female slaves, and camels and asses.	35 Yahvé a comblé mon maître de bénédictions et celui-ci est devenu très riche: il lui a donné dupetit et du gros bétail, de l'argent et de l'or, des serviteurs et des servantes, des chameaux et des ânes.
36 My master's wife Sarah bore a son to my master in her old age, and he has given him everything he owns.	36 Sara, la femme de mon maître, lui a, quand il était déjà vieux, enfanté un fils, auquel il a transmistous ses biens.
37 My master put me under oath, saying: 'You shall not procure a wife for my son among the daughters of the Canaanites in whose land I live;	37 Mon maître m'a fait prêter ce serment: Tu ne prendras pas pour mon fils une femme parmi lesfilles des Cananéens dont j'habite le pays.
38 instead, you shall go to my father's house, to my own relatives, to get a wife for my son.'	38 Malheur à toi si tu ne vas pas dans ma maison paternelle, dans ma famille, choisir une femmepour mon fils!
39 When I asked my master, 'What if the woman will not follow me?,'	39 J'ai dit à mon maître: Peut-être cette femme n'acceptera pas de me suivre,
40 he replied: 'The LORD, in whose presence I have always walked, will send his messenger with you and make your errand successful, and so you will get a wife for my son from my own kindred of my father's house.	40 et il m'a répondu: Yahvé, en présence de qui j'ai marché, enverra son Ange avec toi, il te mèneraau but et tu prendras pour mon fils une femme de ma famille, de ma maison paternelle.
41 Then you shall be released from my ban. If you visit my kindred and they refuse you, then, too, you shall be released from my ban.'	41 Tu seras alors quitte de ma malédiction: tu seras allé dans ma famille et, s'ils te refusent, tu serasquitte de ma malédiction.
42 "When I came to the spring today, I prayed: 'LORD, God of my master Abraham, may it be your will to make successful the errand I am engaged on!	42 Je suis arrivé aujourd'hui à la source et j'ai dit: Yahvé, Dieu de mon maître Abraham, montre, je teprie, si tu es disposé à mener au but le chemin par où je vais:
43 While I stand here at the spring, if I say to a young woman who comes out to draw water, Please give me a little water from your jug,	43 je me tiens près de la source; la jeune fille qui sortira pour puiser, à qui je dirai: S'il te plaît,donne-moi à boire un peu d'eau de ta cruche,
44 and she answers, Not only may you have a drink, but I will give water to your camels, too--let her be the woman whom the LORD has decided upon for my master's son.'	44 et qui répondra: Bois toi-même et je puiserai aussi pour tes chameaux, ce sera la femme queYahvé a destinée au fils de mon maître.
45 "I had scarcely finished saying this prayer to myself when Rebekah came out with a jug on her shoulder. After she went down to the spring and drew water, I said to her, 'Please let me have a drink.'	45 Je n'avais pas fini de parler en moi-même que Rébecca sortait, sa cruche sur l'épaule. Elledescendit à la source et puisa. Je lui dis: Donne-moi à boire, s'il te plaît!
46 She quickly lowered the jug she was carrying and said, 'Take a drink, and let me bring water for your camels, too.' So I drank, and she watered the camels also.	46 Vite, elle se déchargea de sa cruche et dit: Bois, et j'abreuverai aussi tes chameaux. J'ai bu et elle aabreuvé aussi mes chameaux.
47 When I asked her, 'Whose daughter are you?' she answered, 'The daughter of Bethuel, son of Nahor, borne to Nahor by Milcah.' So I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her wrists.	47 Je lui ai demandé: De qui es-tu la fille? Et elle a répondu:Je suis la fille de Bétuel, le fils queMilka a donné à Nahor. Alors j'ai mis cet anneau à ses narines et ces bracelets à ses bras,
48 Then I bowed down in worship to the LORD, blessing the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me on the right road to obtain the daughter of my master's kinsman for his son.	48 et je me suis prosterné et j'ai adoré Yahvé, et j'ai béni Yahvé, Dieu de mon maître Abraham, quim'avait conduit par un chemin de bonté prendre pour son fils la fille du frère de mon maître.
49 If, therefore, you have in mind to show true loyalty to my master, let me know; but if not, let me know that, too. I can then proceed accordingly."	49 Maintenant, si vous êtes disposés à montrer à mon maître bienveillance et bonté, déclarez-le-moi,si non, déclarez-le-moi, pour que je me tourne à droite ou à gauche."
50 Laban and his household said in reply: "This thing comes from the LORD; we can say nothing to you either for or against it.	50 Laban et Bétuel prirent la parole et dirent: "La chose vient de Yahvé, nous ne pouvons te dire nioui ni non.
51 Here is Rebekah, ready for you; take her with you, that she may become the wife of your master's son, as the LORD has said."	51 Rébecca est là devant toi: prends-la et pars, et qu'elle devienne la femme du fils de ton maître,comme a dit Yahvé."
52 When Abraham's servant heard their answer, he bowed to the ground before the LORD.	52 Lorsque le serviteur d'Abraham entendit ces paroles, il se prosterna à terre devant Yahvé.
53 Then he brought out objects of silver and gold and articles of clothing and presented them to Rebekah; he also gave costly presents to her brother and mother.	53 Il sortit des bijoux d'argent et d'or et des vêtements, qu'il donna à Rébecca; il fit aussi de richescadeaux à son frère et à sa mère.
54 After he and the men with him had eaten and drunk, they spent the night there. When they were up the next morning, he said, "Give me leave to return to my master."	54 Ils mangèrent et ils burent, lui et les hommes qui l'accompagnaient, et ils passèrent la nuit. Lematin, quand ils furent levés, il dit: "Laissez-moi aller chez mon maître."
55 Her brother and mother replied, "Let the girl stay with us a short while, say ten days; after that she may go."	55 Alors le frère et la mère de Rébecca dirent: "Que la jeune fille reste avec nous une dizaine dejours, ensuite elle partira."
56 But he said to them, "Do not detain me, now that the LORD has made my errand successful; let me go back to my master."	56 Mais il leur répondit: "Ne me retardez pas, puisque c'est Yahvé qui m'a mené au but: laissez-moipartir, que j'aille chez mon maître."
57 They answered, "Let us call the girl and see what she herself has to say about it."	57 Ils dirent: "Appelons la jeune fille et demandons-lui son avis."
58 So they called Rebekah and asked her, "Do you wish to go with this man?" She answered, "I do."	58 Ils appelèrent Rébecca et lui dirent: "Veux-tu partir avec cet homme?" Et elle répondit: "Je veuxbien."
59 At this they allowed their sister Rebekah and her nurse to take leave, along with Abraham's servant and his men.	59 Alors ils laissèrent partir leur sœur Rébecca, avec sa nourrice, le serviteur d'Abraham et seshommes.
60 Invoking a blessing on Rebekah, they said: "Sister, may you grow into thousands of myriads; And may your descendants gain possession of the gates of their enemies!"	60 Ils bénirent Rébecca et lui dirent: "Notre sœur, ô toi, deviens des milliers de myriades! Que tapostérité conquière la porte de ses ennemis!"
61 Then Rebekah and her maids started out; they mounted their camels and followed the man. So the servant took Rebekah and went on his way.	61 Rébecca et ses servantes se levèrent, montèrent sur les chameaux et suivirent l'homme. Leserviteur prit Rébecca et partit.
62 Meanwhile Isaac had gone from Beer-lahai-roi and was living in the region of the Negeb.	62 Isaac était revenu du puits de Lahaï-Roï, et il habitait au pays du Négeb.
63 One day toward evening he went out. . . in the field, and as he looked around, he noticed that camels were approaching.
64 Rebekah, too, was looking about, and when she saw him, she alighted from her camel	64 Et Rébecca, levant les yeux, vit Isaac. Elle sauta à bas du chameau
65 and asked the servant, "Who is the man out there, walking through the fields toward us?" "That is my master," replied the servant. Then she covered herself with her veil.	65 et dit au serviteur: "Quel est cet homme-là, qui vient dans la campagne à notre rencontre?" Leserviteur répondit: "C'est mon maître"; alors elle prit son voile et se couvrit.
66 The servant recounted to Isaac all the things he had done.	66 Le serviteur raconta à Isaac toute l'affaire qu'il avait faite.
67 Then Isaac took Rebekah into his tent; he married her, and thus she became his wife. In his love for her Isaac found solace after the death of his mother Sarah.	67 Et Isaac introduisit Rébecca dans sa tente: il la prit et elle devint sa femme et il l'aima. Et Isaac seconsola de la perte de sa mère.
