NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
Abram's wife Sarai had borne him no children. She had, however, an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar.1 Now Sarai the wife of Abram, had brought forth no children; having a handmaid, an Egyptian, named Agar,
Sarai said to Abram: "The LORD has kept me from bearing children. Have intercourse, then, with my maid; perhaps I shall have sons through her." Abram heeded Sarai's request.2 She said to her husband: Behold, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: go in unto my handmaid, it may be I may have children of her at least. And when he agreed to her request,
Thus, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, his wife Sarai took her maid, Hagar the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his concubine.3 She took Agar the Egyptian her handmaid, ten years after they first dwelt in the land of Chanaan, and gave her to her husband to wife.
He had intercourse with her, and she became pregnant. When she became aware of her pregnancy, she looked on her mistress with disdain.4 And he went in to her. But she, perceiving that she was with child, despised her mistress.
So Sarai said to Abram: "You are responsible for this outrage against me. I myself gave my maid to your embrace; but ever since she became aware of her pregnancy, she has been looking on me with disdain. May the LORD decide between you and me!"5 And Sarai said to Abram: Thou dost unjustly with me: I gave my handmaid into thy bosom, and she perceiving herself to be with child, despiseth me. The Lord judge between me and thee.
Abram told Sarai: "Your maid is in your power. Do to her whatever you please." Sarai then abused her so much that Hagar ran away from her.6 And Abram made answer, and said to her: Behold thy handmaid is in thy own hand, use her its it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai afflicted her, she ran away.
The LORD'S messenger found her by a spring in the wilderness, the spring on the road to Shur,7 And the angel of the Lord having found her, by a fountain of water in the wilderness, which is in the way to Sur in the desert,
and he asked, "Hagar, maid of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?" She answered, "I am running away from my mistress, Sarai."8 He said to her: Agar, handmaid of Sarai, whence comest thou? and whither goest thou? And she answered: I flee from the face of Sarai, my mistress.
But the LORD'S messenger told her: "Go back to your mistress and submit to her abusive treatment.9 And the angel of the Lord said to her: Return to thy mistress, and humble thyself under her hand.
I will make your descendants so numerous," added the LORD'S messenger, "that they will be too many to count.10 And again he said: I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, and it shall not be numbered for multitude.
Besides," the LORD'S messenger said to her: "You are now pregnant and shall bear a son; you shall name him Ishmael, For the LORD has heard you, God has answered you.11 And again: Behold, said he, thou art with child, and thou shalt bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name Ismael, because the Lord hath heard thy affliction.
He shall be a wild ass of a man, his hand against everyone, and everyone's hand against him; In opposition to all his kin shall he encamp."12 He shall be a wild man: his hand will be against all men, and all men's hands against him: and he shall pitch his tents over against all his brethren.
To the LORD who spoke to her she gave a name, saying, "You are the God of Vision"; she meant, "Have I really seen God and remained alive after my vision?"13 And she called the name of the Lord that spoke unto her: Thou the God who hast seen me. For she said: Verily here have I seen the hinder parts of him that seeth me.
That is why the well is called Beer-lahai-roi. It is between Kadesh and Bered.14 Therefore she called that well, The well of him that liveth and seeth me. The same is between Cades and Bared.
Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram named the son whom Hagar bore him Ishmael.15 And Agar brought forth a son to Abram: who called his name Ismael.
Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.16 Abram was fourscore and six years old when Agar brought him forth Ismael.
