1 ויפל יוסף על פני אביו ויבך עליו וישק לו	1 At this Joseph threw himself on his father's face, covering it with tears and kisses.
2 ויצו יוסף את עבדיו את הרפאים לחנט את אביו ויחנטו הרפאים את ישראל	2 Then Joseph ordered the doctors in his service to embalm his father. The doctors embalmed Israel,
3 וימלאו לו ארבעים יום כי כן ימלאו ימי החנטים ויבכו אתו מצרים שבעים יום	3 and it took them forty days, for embalming takes forty days to complete. The Egyptians mourned himfor seventy days.
4 ויעברו ימי בכיתו וידבר יוסף אל בית פרעה לאמר אם נא מצאתי חן בעיניכם דברו נא באזני פרעה לאמר	4 When the period of mourning for him was over, Joseph said to Pharaoh's household, 'If you have anyaffection for me, see that this message reaches Pharaoh's ears,
5 אבי השביעני לאמר הנה אנכי מת בקברי אשר כריתי לי בארץ כנען שמה תקברני ועתה אעלה נא ואקברה את אבי ואשובה	5 "My father put me under oath, saying: I am about to die. In the tomb which I dug for myself in Canaan, that is where you are to bury me. So may I have leave to go up and bury my father, and then come back?" '
6 ויאמר פרעה עלה וקבר את אביך כאשר השביעך	6 Pharaoh replied, 'Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.'
7 ויעל יוסף לקבר את אביו ויעלו אתו כל עבדי פרעה זקני ביתו וכל זקני ארץ מצרים	7 Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went all Pharaoh's officials, the dignitaries of hispalace and al the dignitaries of Egypt,
8 וכל בית יוסף ואחיו ובית אביו רק טפם וצאנם ובקרם עזבו בארץ גשן	8 as wel as all Joseph's family, his brothers and his father's family. The only people they left behind inGoshen were those unfit to travel, and their flocks and cattle.
9 ויעל עמו גם רכב גם פרשים ויהי המחנה כבד מאד	9 Chariots and horsemen went up with him too; it was a very large retinue.
10 ויבאו עד גרן האטד אשר בעבר הירדן ויספדו שם מספד גדול וכבד מאד ויעש לאביו אבל שבעת ימים	10 On arriving at Goren-ha-Atad, which is across the Jordan, they there held a long and solemnlamentation, and Joseph observed seven days' mourning for his father.
11 וירא יושב הארץ הכנעני את האבל בגרן האטד ויאמרו אבל כבד זה למצרים על כן קרא שמה אבל מצרים אשר בעבר הירדן	11 When the Canaanites, the local inhabitants, witnessed the mourning at Goren-ha-Atad, they said,'This is a solemn act of mourning by the Egyptians,' which is why the place was given the name Abel-Mizraim-itis across the Jordan.
12 ויעשו בניו לו כן כאשר צום	12 His sons did what he had ordered them to do for him.
13 וישאו אתו בניו ארצה כנען ויקברו אתו במערת שדה המכפלה אשר קנה אברהם את השדה לאחזת קבר מאת עפרן החתי על פני ממרא	13 His sons carried him to Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field at Machpelah, facing Mamre,which Abraham had bought from Ephron the Hittite as a burial site of his own.
14 וישב יוסף מצרימה הוא ואחיו וכל העלים אתו לקבר את אביו אחרי קברו את אביו	14 Then Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all those who had come up with him to bury hisfather.
15 ויראו אחי יוסף כי מת אביהם ויאמרו לו ישטמנו יוסף והשב ישיב לנו את כל הרעה אשר גמלנו אתו	15 Seeing that their father was dead, Joseph's brothers said, 'What if Joseph intends to treat us asenemies and pay us back for al the wrong we did him?'
16 ויצוו אל יוסף לאמר אביך צוה לפני מותו לאמר	16 So they sent this message to Joseph: 'Before your father died, he gave us this order:
17 כה תאמרו ליוסף אנא שא נא פשע אחיך וחטאתם כי רעה גמלוך ועתה שא נא לפשע עבדי אלהי אביך ויבך יוסף בדברם אליו	17 "You are to say to Joseph: Now please forgive the crime and faults of your brothers and al thewrong they did you." So now please forgive the crime of the servants of your father's God.' Joseph wept at themessage they sent to him.
18 וילכו גם אחיו ויפלו לפניו ויאמרו הננו לך לעבדים	18 Then his brothers went to him themselves and, throwing themselves at his feet, said, 'Take us asyour slaves!'
19 ויאמר אלהם יוסף אל תיראו כי התחת אלהים אני	19 But Joseph replied, 'Do not be afraid; is it for me to put myself in God's place?
20 ואתם חשבתם עלי רעה אלהים חשבה לטבה למען עשה כיום הזה להחית עם רב	20 The evil you planned to do me has by God's design been turned to good, to bring about the presentresult: the survival of a numerous people.
21 ועתה אל תיראו אנכי אכלכל אתכם ואת טפכם וינחם אותם וידבר על לבם	21 So there is no need to be afraid; I shall provide for you and your dependants.' In this way hereassured them by speaking affectionately to them.
22 וישב יוסף במצרים הוא ובית אביו ויחי יוסף מאה ועשר שנים	22 So Joseph stayed in Egypt with his father's family; and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years.
23 וירא יוסף לאפרים בני שלשים גם בני מכיר בן מנשה ילדו על ברכי יוסף	23 Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim's line, as also the children of Machir son of Manasseh,who were born on Joseph's lap.
24 ויאמר יוסף אל אחיו אנכי מת ואלהים פקד יפקד אתכם והעלה אתכם מן הארץ הזאת אל הארץ אשר נשבע לאברהם ליצחק וליעקב	24 At length Joseph said to his brothers, 'I am about to die; but God wil be sure to remember you kindlyand take you out of this country to the country which he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.'
25 וישבע יוסף את בני ישראל לאמר פקד יפקד אלהים אתכם והעלתם את עצמתי מזה	25 And Joseph put Israel's sons on oath, saying, 'When God remembers you with kindness, be sure totake my bones away from here.'
26 וימת יוסף בן מאה ועשר שנים ויחנטו אתו ויישם בארון במצרים	26 Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten; he was embalmed and laid in a coffin in Egypt.
