και αναλαβουσα πασα η συναγωγη εδωκεν φωνην και εκλαιεν ο λαος ολην την νυκτα εκεινην | 1 And so, crying out, the entire crowd wept throughout that night. |
και διεγογγυζον επι μωυσην και ααρων παντες οι υιοι ισραηλ και ειπαν προς αυτους πασα η συναγωγη οφελον απεθανομεν εν γη αιγυπτω η εν τη ερημω ταυτη ει απεθανομεν | 2 And all the sons of Israel were murmuring against Moses and Aaron, saying: |
και ινα τι κυριος εισαγει ημας εις την γην ταυτην πεσειν εν πολεμω αι γυναικες ημων και τα παιδια εσονται εις διαρπαγην νυν ουν βελτιον ημιν εστιν αποστραφηναι εις αιγυπτον | 3 “If only we had died in Egypt,” and, “If only we would perish in this vast wilderness,” and, “May the Lord not lead us into this land, lest we fall by the sword, and our wives, as well as our children, be led away as captives. Is it not better to return to Egypt?” |
και ειπαν ετερος τω ετερω δωμεν αρχηγον και αποστρεψωμεν εις αιγυπτον | 4 And they said to one another, “Let us appoint our leader, and so return to Egypt.” |
και επεσεν μωυσης και ααρων επι προσωπον εναντιον πασης συναγωγης υιων ισραηλ | 5 And when Moses and Aaron heard this, they fell prone on the ground in the sight of the multitude of the sons of Israel. |
ιησους δε ο του ναυη και χαλεβ ο του ιεφοννη των κατασκεψαμενων την γην διερρηξαν τα ιματια αυτων | 6 Yet truly, Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who themselves had also viewed the land, tore their garments, |
και ειπαν προς πασαν συναγωγην υιων ισραηλ λεγοντες η γη ην κατεσκεψαμεθα αυτην αγαθη εστιν σφοδρα σφοδρα | 7 and they said to the entire multitude of the sons of Israel: “The land that we circled through is very good. |
ει αιρετιζει ημας κυριος εισαξει ημας εις την γην ταυτην και δωσει αυτην ημιν γη ητις εστιν ρεουσα γαλα και μελι | 8 If the Lord will be gracious to us, he will lead us into it, and he will give us the land flowing with milk and honey. |
αλλα απο του κυριου μη αποσταται γινεσθε υμεις δε μη φοβηθητε τον λαον της γης οτι καταβρωμα ημιν εστιν αφεστηκεν γαρ ο καιρος απ' αυτων ο δε κυριος εν ημιν μη φοβηθητε αυτους | 9 Do not choose to be rebellious against the Lord. And do not fear the people of this land, for, like bread, so are we able to devour them. All protection has withdrawn from them. The Lord is with us. Do not be afraid.” |
και ειπεν πασα η συναγωγη καταλιθοβολησαι αυτους εν λιθοις και η δοξα κυριου ωφθη εν νεφελη επι της σκηνης του μαρτυριου εν πασι τοις υιοις ισραηλ | 10 And when the entire multitude cried out, and they wanted to crush them with stones, the glory of the Lord appeared, over the roof of the covenant, to all the sons of Israel. |
και ειπεν κυριος προς μωυσην εως τινος παροξυνει με ο λαος ουτος και εως τινος ου πιστευουσιν μοι εν πασιν τοις σημειοις οις εποιησα εν αυτοις | 11 And the Lord said to Moses: “How long will this people disparage me? How long will they refuse to believe me, despite all the signs that I have wrought before them? |
παταξω αυτους θανατω και απολω αυτους και ποιησω σε και τον οικον του πατρος σου εις εθνος μεγα και πολυ μαλλον η τουτο | 12 Therefore, I will strike them with a pestilence, and so I will consume them. But you I will make the ruler over a great nation, and one which is mightier than this one.” |
και ειπεν μωυσης προς κυριον και ακουσεται αιγυπτος οτι ανηγαγες τη ισχυι σου τον λαον τουτον εξ αυτων | 13 And Moses said to the Lord: “But then the Egyptians, from whose midst you led out this people, |
αλλα και παντες οι κατοικουντες επι της γης ταυτης ακηκοασιν οτι συ ει κυριος εν τω λαω τουτω οστις οφθαλμοις κατ' οφθαλμους οπταζη κυριε και η νεφελη σου εφεστηκεν επ' αυτων και εν στυλω νεφελης συ πορευη προτερος αυτων την ημεραν και εν στυλω πυρος την νυκτα | 14 and the inhabitants of this land, who have heard that you, O Lord, are among this people, and that you are seen face to face, and that your cloud protects them, and that you go before them with a column of cloud by day, and a column of fire by night, |
και εκτριψεις τον λαον τουτον ωσει ανθρωπον ενα και ερουσιν τα εθνη οσοι ακηκοασιν το ονομα σου λεγοντες | 15 may hear that you have killed so great a multitude, as if they were one man, and they may say: |
παρα το μη δυνασθαι κυριον εισαγαγειν τον λαον τουτον εις την γην ην ωμοσεν αυτοις κατεστρωσεν αυτους εν τη ερημω | 16 ‘He was not able to lead the people into the land about which he had sworn. Therefore, he slew them in the wilderness.’ |
και νυν υψωθητω η ισχυς σου κυριε ον τροπον ειπας λεγων | 17 Therefore, may the strength of the Lord be magnified, just as you swore, saying: |
κυριος μακροθυμος και πολυελεος και αληθινος αφαιρων ανομιας και αδικιας και αμαρτιας και καθαρισμω ου καθαριει τον ενοχον αποδιδους αμαρτιας πατερων επι τεκνα εως τριτης και τεταρτης | 18 ‘The Lord is patient and full of mercy, taking away iniquity and wickedness, and forsaking no one who is harmless. He visits the sins of the fathers upon the sons, to the third and fourth generation.’ |
αφες την αμαρτιαν τω λαω τουτω κατα το μεγα ελεος σου καθαπερ ιλεως αυτοις εγενου απ' αιγυπτου εως του νυν | 19 Forgive, I beg you, the sins of this people, according to the greatness of your mercy, just as you have been gracious to them in their journey from Egypt to this place.” |
και ειπεν κυριος προς μωυσην ιλεως αυτοις ειμι κατα το ρημα σου | 20 And the Lord said: “I have forgiven them according to your word. |
αλλα ζω εγω και ζων το ονομα μου και εμπλησει η δοξα κυριου πασαν την γην | 21 Also, as I live, the entire world shall be filled with the glory of the Lord. |
οτι παντες οι ανδρες οι ορωντες την δοξαν μου και τα σημεια α εποιησα εν αιγυπτω και εν τη ερημω ταυτη και επειρασαν με τουτο δεκατον και ουκ εισηκουσαν μου της φωνης | 22 And yet, all the men who have seen my majesty, and the signs that I have wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, and who have tested me ten times already, and yet have not obeyed my voice, |
η μην ουκ οψονται την γην ην ωμοσα τοις πατρασιν αυτων αλλ' η τα τεκνα αυτων α εστιν μετ' εμου ωδε οσοι ουκ οιδασιν αγαθον ουδε κακον πας νεωτερος απειρος τουτοις δωσω την γην παντες δε οι παροξυναντες με ουκ οψονται αυτην | 23 these shall not see the land, about which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who detracted me gaze upon it. |
ο δε παις μου χαλεβ οτι εγενηθη πνευμα ετερον εν αυτω και επηκολουθησεν μοι εισαξω αυτον εις την γην εις ην εισηλθεν εκει και το σπερμα αυτου κληρονομησει αυτην | 24 My servant Caleb, who, being full of another spirit, has followed me, I will lead into this land, through which he has wandered, and his offspring shall possess it. |
ο δε αμαληκ και ο χαναναιος κατοικουσιν εν τη κοιλαδι αυριον επιστραφητε υμεις και απαρατε εις την ερημον οδον θαλασσαν ερυθραν | 25 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the valleys. Tomorrow, move the camp and return into the wilderness, by the way of the Red Sea.” |
και ειπεν κυριος προς μωυσην και ααρων λεγων | 26 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: |
εως τινος την συναγωγην την πονηραν ταυτην α αυτοι γογγυζουσιν εναντιον εμου την γογγυσιν των υιων ισραηλ ην εγογγυσαν περι υμων ακηκοα | 27 “How long will this very wicked multitude murmur against me? I have heard the complaints of the sons of Israel. |
ειπον αυτοις ζω εγω λεγει κυριος η μην ον τροπον λελαληκατε εις τα ωτα μου ουτως ποιησω υμιν | 28 Therefore, say to them: As I live, says the Lord, as you spoke in my hearing, so will I do to you. |
εν τη ερημω ταυτη πεσειται τα κωλα υμων και πασα η επισκοπη υμων και οι κατηριθμημενοι υμων απο εικοσαετους και επανω οσοι εγογγυσαν επ' εμοι | 29 In the wilderness, here shall your carcasses lie. All you who were numbered from twenty years and above, and who have murmured against me, |
ει υμεις εισελευσεσθε εις την γην εφ' ην εξετεινα την χειρα μου κατασκηνωσαι υμας επ' αυτης αλλ' η χαλεβ υιος ιεφοννη και ιησους ο του ναυη | 30 you shall not enter into the land, over which I lifted up my hand to cause you to live there, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. |
και τα παιδια α ειπατε εν διαρπαγη εσεσθαι εισαξω αυτους εις την γην και κληρονομησουσιν την γην ην υμεις απεστητε απ' αυτης | 31 But your little ones, about whom you said that they would be a prey to the enemies, I will lead them in, so that they may see the land that has displeased you. |
και τα κωλα υμων πεσειται εν τη ερημω ταυτη | 32 Your carcasses shall lie in the wilderness. |
οι δε υιοι υμων εσονται νεμομενοι εν τη ερημω τεσσαρακοντα ετη και ανοισουσιν την πορνειαν υμων εως αν αναλωθη τα κωλα υμων εν τη ερημω | 33 Your sons shall wander in the desert for forty years, and they shall bear your fornication, until the carcasses of their fathers are consumed in the desert. |
κατα τον αριθμον των ημερων οσας κατεσκεψασθε την γην τεσσαρακοντα ημερας ημεραν του ενιαυτου λημψεσθε τας αμαρτιας υμων τεσσαρακοντα ετη και γνωσεσθε τον θυμον της οργης μου | 34 According to the number of the forty days, during which you examined the land, one year shall be charged for each day. And so, for forty years you shall take back your iniquities, and you shall know my retribution. |
εγω κυριος ελαλησα η μην ουτως ποιησω τη συναγωγη τη πονηρα ταυτη τη επισυνεσταμενη επ' εμε εν τη ερημω ταυτη εξαναλωθησονται και εκει αποθανουνται | 35 For just as I have spoken, so shall I do, to this entire most wicked multitude, which has risen up together against me. In the wilderness, here shall it fade away and die.” |
και οι ανθρωποι ους απεστειλεν μωυσης κατασκεψασθαι την γην και παραγενηθεντες διεγογγυσαν κατ' αυτης προς την συναγωγην εξενεγκαι ρηματα πονηρα περι της γης | 36 Therefore, all the men, whom Moses had sent to contemplate the land, and who, having returned, had caused the entire multitude to murmur against him, disparaging the land as if it were evil, |
και απεθανον οι ανθρωποι οι κατειπαντες κατα της γης πονηρα εν τη πληγη εναντι κυριου | 37 suffered death and were struck down in the sight of the Lord. |
και ιησους υιος ναυη και χαλεβ υιος ιεφοννη εζησαν απο των ανθρωπων εκεινων των πεπορευμενων κατασκεψασθαι την γην | 38 But only Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive, out of all those who had journeyed to examine the land. |
και ελαλησεν μωυσης τα ρηματα ταυτα προς παντας υιους ισραηλ και επενθησεν ο λαος σφοδρα | 39 And Moses spoke all these words to all the sons of Israel, and the people mourned exceedingly. |
και ορθρισαντες το πρωι ανεβησαν εις την κορυφην του ορους λεγοντες ιδου οιδε ημεις αναβησομεθα εις τον τοπον ον ειπεν κυριος οτι ημαρτομεν | 40 And behold, rising up at first light, they climbed to the top of the mountain, and they said, “We are prepared to ascend to the place, about which the Lord has spoken, for we have sinned.” |
και ειπεν μωυσης ινα τι υμεις παραβαινετε το ρημα κυριου ουκ ευοδα εσται υμιν | 41 And Moses said to them: “Why do you transgress the word of the Lord, merely because it will not result in prosperity for you? |
μη αναβαινετε ου γαρ εστιν κυριος μεθ' υμων και πεσεισθε προ προσωπου των εχθρων υμων | 42 Do not ascend, for the Lord is not with you, lest you be overthrown before your enemies. |
οτι ο αμαληκ και ο χαναναιος εκει εμπροσθεν υμων και πεσεισθε μαχαιρα ου εινεκεν απεστραφητε απειθουντες κυριω και ουκ εσται κυριος εν υμιν | 43 The Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, by whose sword you shall be ruined, for you were not willing to consent to the Lord, and so the Lord is not with you.” |
και διαβιασαμενοι ανεβησαν επι την κορυφην του ορους η δε κιβωτος της διαθηκης κυριου και μωυσης ουκ εκινηθησαν εκ της παρεμβολης | 44 But they, having been darkened, ascended to the top of the mountain. But the ark of the testament of the Lord, and Moses, did not withdraw from the camp. |
και κατεβη ο αμαληκ και ο χαναναιος ο εγκαθημενος εν τω ορει εκεινω και ετρεψαντο αυτους και κατεκοψαν αυτους εως ερμαν και απεστραφησαν εις την παρεμβολην | 45 And the Amalekites descended, along with those Canaanites who were living in the mountains. And so, striking and cutting them down, they pursued them all the way to Hormah. |
