1 And the ark of the LORD was in the country of the Philistines seven months.	1 L'arca del Signore era stata nel paese dei Filistei sette mesi,
2 And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the LORD? tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place.	2 quando i Filistei, chiamati i sacerdoti e gl'indovini, dissero: « Che dobbiamo fare dell'arca del Signore? Diteci come dobbiamo rimandarla al suo luogo ». Ed essi risposero:
3 And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.	3 « Se voi rimandate l'arca del Dio d'Israele, non la rimandate a vuoto; ma rendetele quel che dovete per il peccato, e allora sarete guariti e saprete perchè la sua mano non si allontani da voi ».
4 Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.	4 Dissero i Filistei: « Che dobbiamo noi renderle per il peccato? » Quelli risposero:
5 Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.	5 « Farete cinque ani d'oro e cinque topi d'oro, secondo il numero delle provincie filistee, perchè la piaga tanto per voi che per i vostri satrapi fu la stessa. Fate adunque delle figure dei vostri ani, e delle figure dei topi che han devastata la vostra terra, date gloria al Dio d'Israele, affinchè egli così ritiri la sua mano da voi, dai vostri dèi e dalla vostra terra.
6 Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharoah hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?	6 Perchè volete indurare il vostro cuore, come l'Egitto e Faraone indurarono il loro? Non è forse vero che egli li fece partire dopo essere stato percosso, ed essi se ne andarono?
7 Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them:	7 Or dunque fate un carro nuovo e attaccatevi due vacche lattanti, sopra cui non sia stato mai messo il giogo, e chiudete nella stalla i loro vitelli.
8 And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.	8 Poi, presa l'arca del Signore, la metterete sul carro, e le figure d'oro che le pagate pel peccato, le metterete in una cassetta accanto ad essa, e così la lascerete andare.
9 And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that is not his hand that smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.	9 E starete a guardare: se salirà la strada dei suoi confini, verso Betsames, è lui che ci ha fatto sì gran male, se no, sapremo che non è la sua mano che ci ha percossi, ma è stato un caso ».
10 And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home:	10 Quelli adunque fecero così: presero due vacche che allattavano i loro vitelli, le misero al carro e chiusero i vitelli nella stalla:
11 And they laid the ark of the LORD upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods.	11 e sul carro vi posero l'arca di Dio e la cassetta che conteneva i topi d'oro e le figure degli ani.
12 And the kine took the straight way to the way of Beth-shemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth-shemesh.	12 Or le vacche, infilata direttamente la via che conduce a Betsames, seguitavano la medesima strada, andando avanti e muggendo, senza piegare nè a destra nè a sinistra, e i satrapi dei Filistei andarono loro dietro sino ai confini di Betsames.
13 And they of Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.	13 Or i Betsamiti mietevano il grano nella valle, e, alzando gli occhi, videro l'arca, e si rallegrarono come l'ebbero veduta.
14 And the cart came into the field of Joshua, a Beth-shemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered the kine a burnt offering unto the LORD.	14 Il carro andò nel campo di Giosuè Betsamita e vi si fermò. Vi er lì una gran pietra. Fatto in pezzi il legname del carro, vi misero sopra lev acche in olocausto al Signore;
15 And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the LORD.	15 e leviti, deposta l'arca, con la cassetta che le era accanto e nella quale eran le figure d'oro, la collocarono sopra quella gran pietra. I Betsamiti offrirono in quel giorno olocausti ed immolarono vittime al Signore;
16 And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.	16 e i cinque satrapi dei filistei, veduto ciò. ritornarono lo stesso giorno ad Accaron.
17 And these are the golden emerods which the Philistines returned for a trespass offering unto the LORD; for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Askelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one;	17 Ecco gli ani d'oro che i Filistei offrirono in espiazione al Signore: uno per Azoto, uno per Gaza, uno per Ascalon, uno per Get, uno per Accaron;
18 And the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of Abel, whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Beth-shemite.	18 poi tanti topi d'oro quante son le città delle cinque provincie dei Filistei, dalla città murata al villaggio senza mura, sino alla grande Abel sulla quale posarono l'arca del Signore, la quale fino a questo giorno è stata nel campo di Giosuè Betsamita.
19 And he smote the men of Beth-shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.	19 Ma essendo stati percossi degli uomini di Betsames, per aver guardata l'arca del Signore, settanta uomini del popolo, e cinquanta mila della plebe, il popolo pianse, perchè il Signore aveva percossa la plebe con una gran piaga;
20 And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us?	20 e gli uomini di Betsames esclamarono:« Chi potrà stare al cospetto del Signore,di questo Dio santo? A chi andrà, partendo da noi? »
21 And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjath-jearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the LORD; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.	21 E spedirono dei messia dire agli abitanti di Cariatiarim: « I Filistei hanno riportata l'arca del Signore, scendete e riconducetela nel vostro paese ».
