1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.	1 Intanto i Filistei ingaggiarono battaglia contro Israele e gli uomini d'Israele si dettero alla fuga di fronte ai Filistei e caddero trafitti sul monte Gelboe.
2 And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, Saul's sons.	2 I Filistei si gettarono addosso a Saul e ai suoi figli, così colpirono Gionata, Abinadàb e Malkisuà, figli di Saul.
3 And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was sore wounded of the archers.	3 La battaglia si aggravò contro Saul; gli arcieri lo presero di mira con gli archi ed egli fu ferito dagli arcieri.
4 Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.	4 Allora Saul disse al suo scudiero: "Sfodera la tua spada e trafiggimi con essa, affinché non vengano quegli incirconcisi, mi trafiggano e facciano sevizie su di me". Ma il suo scudiero non volle perché era pieno di timore. Allora Saul prese la spada e si gettò su di essa.
5 And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.	5 Quando lo scudiero vide che Saul era morto, anch'egli si gettò sulla propria spada e morì con lui.
6 So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armourbearer, and all his men, that same day together.	6 In quel giorno morirono insieme Saul, i suoi tre figli, il suo scudiero e tutti i suoi uomini.
7 And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were on the other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.	7 Quando gl'Israeliti che erano di là della valle e quelli che erano di là del Giordano videro che gli uomini d'Israele erano fuggiti e che Saul e i suoi figli erano morti, abbandonarono le città e fuggirono. Allora vennero i Filistei e vi si stabilirono.
8 And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in mount Gilboa.	8 Il giorno seguente i Filistei andarono a spogliare gli uccisi e trovarono Saul e i suoi tre figli caduti sul monte Gelboe.
9 And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.	9 Essi troncarono la testa di lui e lo spogliarono delle armi, poi mandarono in giro nel paese dei Filistei a dare la bella notizia nel tempio dei loro idoli e al popolo.
10 And they put his armour in the house of Ashtaroth: and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan.	10 Deposero le sue armi nel tempio di Astarte, mentre il suo cadavere lo affissero alle mura di Bet-Sean.
11 And when the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard of that which the Philistines had done to Saul;	11 Gli abitanti di Iabes di Gàlaad udirono quello che i Filistei avevano fatto a Saul;
12 All the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.	12 allora si alzarono tutti gli uomini valorosi e, dopo aver viaggiato tutta la notte, presero il corpo di Saul e i corpi dei suoi figli dalle mura di Bet-Sean; ritornarono a Iabes, dove li bruciarono.
13 And they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.	13 Poi, prese le loro ossa, le seppellirono sotto il tamarisco a Iabes e fecero digiuno per sette giorni.
