1 Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;	1 Queste sono le popolazioni che il Signore lasciò per porre alla prova, per mezzo di loro, tutti quegli Israeliti che non avevano conosciuto le guerre combattute contro i Cananei.
2 Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;	2 Egli fece questo solo allo scopo di ammaestrare quelle generazioni d'Israeliti che non avevano preso parte alle guerre contro i Cananei, per insegnare loro a combattere.
3 Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entering in of Hamath.	3 Erano i cinque prìncipi dei Filistei, tutti i Cananei, i Sidoni, gli Evei che abitavano sulle montagne del Libano, dal monte di Baal-Ermon fino all'ingresso di Camat.
4 And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.	4 Queste popolazioni restarono per mettere alla prova gli Israeliti, per vedere se essi avrebbero osservato i comandamenti che il Signore aveva dato ai loro padri per mezzo di Mosè.
5 And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:	5 Così gli Israeliti restarono in mezzo ai Cananei, agli Hittiti, agli Amorrei, ai Perizziti, agli Evei e ai Gebusei;
6 And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.	6 presero in moglie le loro figlie, dettero le proprie in moglie ai loro figli e prestarono culto ai loro dèi.
7 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.	7 Gli Israeliti fecero ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore; dimenticarono il Signore, loro Dio, e servirono i Baal e le Asere.
8 Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim eight years.	8 Perciò l'ira del Signore si accese contro Israele e lo mise nelle mani di Cusan-Risataim, re del Paese dei due fiumi. Gli Israeliti furono servi di Cusan-Risataim per otto anni.
9 And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.	9 Poi gli Israeliti alzarono il loro grido al Signore, il quale suscitò loro un salvatore che li liberò: fu Otniel, figlio di Kenaz, fratello minore di Caleb.
10 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim.	10 Lo spirito del Signore fu sopra di lui, cosicché egli poté salvare Israele: quando Otniel si mosse per combattere, il Signore dette nelle sue mani Cusan-Risataim, re di Aram, che fu vinto.
11 And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.	11 La regione ebbe pace per quarant'anni, fin quando morì Otniel, figlio di Kenaz.
12 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.	12 Ma gli Israeliti continuarono a commettere ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore; perciò questi rese Eglon, re di Moab, più potente d'Israele, perché Israele aveva commesso ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore.
13 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.	13 Eglon, alleatosi con gli Ammoniti e con gli Amaleciti, mosse guerra ad Israele e lo sconfisse: gli alleati occuparono la Città delle Palme cacciandone gli Israeliti,
14 So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.	14 i quali restarono sottomessi a Eglon, re di Moab, per diciotto anni.
15 But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.	15 Poi gli Israeliti alzarono il loro grido al Signore, il quale suscitò loro un salvatore: Eud, figlio di Ghera, della tribù di Beniamino, che era ambidestro. Gli Israeliti inviarono per mezzo suo il tributo a Eglon, re di Moab.
16 But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.	16 Eud si fece una spada a due tagli lunga un cubito, che nascose sotto la veste, sul fianco destro.
17 And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.	17 Consegnò poi il tributo a Eglon, re di Moab, che era uomo molto pingue.
18 And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.	18 Quando Eud ebbe consegnato il tributo, congedò i portatori
19 But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.	19 ed egli tornò indietro dal luogo detto Idoli, che è presso Gàlgala, e fece dire al re che aveva un segreto per lui. Il re allora impose silenzio a tutti gli astanti, che uscirono dalla sua presenza.
20 And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.	20 Eud si accostò allora al re che si trovava nella stanza di riposo al piano superiore, dove stava solo. Gli disse Eud: "Ho una parola di Dio per te". L'altro allora si alzò da sedere;
21 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:	21 Eud, portata la mano sinistra al fianco destro, sguainò la spada e la conficcò nel ventre del re.
22 And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.	22 Dietro alla lama vi penetrò anche l'elsa e il grasso si richiuse dietro alla lama, perché Eud non ritrasse la spada dal ventre del re. La lama forò gli intestini.
23 Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.	23 Eud uscì nel portico, dopo aver chiuso dietro di sé le porte della stanza, mettendo il chiavistello.
24 When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.	24 Quando egli fu uscito, i servi del re si accostarono alla stanza di riposo e vedendo che le porte erano serrate, pensarono che il re stesse coprendosi i piedi nella stanza di riposo
25 And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.	25 e attesero fino ad essere presi dal senso del disagio, ma nessuno aveva il coraggio di aprire le porte della stanza. Infine presero la chiave e aprirono: il loro signore giaceva a terra morto.
26 And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.	26 Mentre i servi aspettavano, Eud era fuggito. Si mise in salvo a Seira passando dagli Idoli.
27 And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.	27 Quando egli giunse fra le montagne di Efraim, suonò il corno: gli Israeliti scesero dai monti per unirsi a lui, che si mise alla loro testa.
28 And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.	28 Disse loro: "Seguitemi; ché il Signore darà in mano vostra i Moabiti, i vostri nemici". Si mossero ai suoi ordini, occuparono i guadi del Giordano che appartenevano ai Moabiti e non fecero passare nessuno.
29 And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.	29 In quell'occasione gli Israeliti sconfissero i Moabiti, uccidendo circa diecimila uomini, tutti forti e valorosi senza che ne sfuggisse alcuno.
30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.	30 Quel giorno Moab fu umiliato sotto la mano di Israele. La regione ebbe pace per ottant'anni.
31 And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.	31 Dopo di lui ci fu Samgar, figlio di Anat, il quale sconfisse i Filistei uccidendone seicento con un pungolo da buoi. Anche Samgar salvò Israele.
