1 Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;	1 Voici les nations que Yahvé laissa tranquilles pour mettre à l’épreuve Israël, c’est-à-dire les Israélites qui n’avaient pas connu les guerres de Canaan.
2 Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;	2 Il voulait que la jeunesse d’Israël, ceux qui n’avaient pas connu la guerre, apprenne à combattre.
3 Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entering in of Hamath.	3 Restèrent donc les cinq princes des Philistins, tous les Cananéens et les Sidoniens, et aussi les Hivvites qui habitaient la montagne du Liban, depuis la montagne de Baal-Hermon jusqu’à l’Entrée-de-Hamat.
4 And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.	4 Yahvé voulut donc mettre Israël à l’épreuve et voir s’il obéirait à ses commandements, ceux que Moïse avait donnés à leurs pères.
5 And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites, and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites:	5 Les Israélites habitèrent au milieu des Cananéens, des Hittites, des Amorites, des Périsites, des Hivvites et des Jébusites.
6 And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.	6 Ils épousèrent leurs filles, ils donnèrent pour leurs fils leurs propres filles, et ils servirent leurs dieux.
7 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.	7 Les Israélites firent donc ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahvé. Ils oublièrent Yahvé leur Dieu et servirent les Baals et les Ashéras.
8 Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim eight years.	8 Alors la colère de Yahvé s’enflamma contre Israël. Il les livra aux mains de Kouchan-Richéatayim, roi d’Édom, et les Israélites furent soumis à Kouchan-Richéatayim pendant 8 ans.
9 And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.	9 Les Israélites crièrent vers Yahvé, et Yahvé leur fit surgir un sauveur qui les délivra: c’était Otniel, fils de Kénaz, frère cadet de Caleb.
10 And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the LORD delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim.	10 L’esprit de Yahvé reposa sur lui et il agit comme juge en Israël. Il partit en guerre et Yahvé livra entre ses mains Kouchan-Richéatayim, roi d’Édom: il écrasa Kouchan-Richéatayim.
11 And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.	11 Le pays fut en paix pendant 40 ans, puis Otniel, fils de Kénaz mourut.
12 And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.	12 Une fois de plus les Israélites firent ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahvé, et lui rendit Églon, roi de Moab, beaucoup plus fort qu’Israël, simplement parce qu’ils faisaient ce qui déplaît à Yahvé.
13 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.	13 Les Moabites s’allièrent avec les Ammonites et les Amalécites pour combattre Israël, et ils s’emparèrent de la Ville des Palmiers.
14 So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.	14 Pendant 18 ans les Israélites furent soumis à Églon, roi de Moab.
15 But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.	15 Les Israélites crièrent alors vers Yahvé, et Yahvé leur fit surgir un sauveur, Éhoud, fils de Guéra, un homme de Benjamin qui était gaucher. Les Israélites le chargèrent de porter le tribut à Églon, roi de Moab.
16 But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges, of a cubit length; and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh.	16 Éhoud se fit un poignard à deux tranchants, à lame courte, qu’il portait sous son habit contre sa cuisse droite.
17 And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab: and Eglon was a very fat man.	17 Puis il alla offrir le tribut à Églon, roi de Moab (or Églon était un homme très gros).
18 And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present.	18 De retour, après l’offrande du tribut, Éhoud renvoya les gens venus avec lui pour l’apporter,
19 But he himself turned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.	19 comme ils étaient déjà aux Idoles de Guilgal. Lui revint sur ses pas et dit: “Ô roi! J’ai pour toi un message secret.” Le roi répondit: “Silence!” Et tous ceux qui se tenaient autour du roi se retirèrent.
20 And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.	20 Alors Éhoud s’approcha de lui, tandis qu’il était assis dans la chambre haute, bien au frais dans ses appartements privés. Éhoud dit: “C’est un message de Dieu que j’ai pour toi.” Alors le roi se leva de son siège.
21 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly:	21 Éhoud étendit sa main gauche, saisit le poignard de dessus sa cuisse droite et le lui enfonça dans le ventre.
22 And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly; and the dirt came out.	22 La poignée entra à la suite de la lame et la graisse se referma par-dessus la lame, car il ne retira pas le poignard de son ventre, tandis que les excréments sortaient.
23 Then Ehud went forth through the porch, and shut the doors of the parlour upon him, and locked them.	23 Éhoud alors s’échappa par derrière, ferma sur lui les portes de la chambre haute et mit le verrou.
24 When he was gone out, his servants came; and when they saw that, behold, the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Surely he covereth his feet in his summer chamber.	24 Lui sorti, les serviteurs arrivèrent, et voyant les portes de la chambre haute verrouillées, ils se dirent: “Sans doute fait-il ses besoins dans ses appartements privés.”
25 And they tarried till they were ashamed: and, behold, he opened not the doors of the parlour; therefore they took a key, and opened them: and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.	25 Ils attendirent tellement qu’ils en avaient honte, et les portes de la chambre haute ne s’ouvraient toujours pas. Alors ils prirent la clé et ouvrirent: leur maître gisait à terre, mort!
26 And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirath.	26 Éhoud s’était mis en sûreté pendant qu’ils attendaient. Il repassa par les Idoles et se sauva à Ha-Seïra.
27 And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.	27 Dès qu’il fut arrivé, il sonna du cor dans la montagne d’Éphraïm, et les Israélites descendirent de la montagne à sa suite.
28 And he said unto them, Follow after me: for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.	28 Il leur dit: “Suivez-moi, car Yahvé a livré vos ennemis, les Moabites, entre nos mains.” Tous descendirent à sa suite, coupèrent les gués du Jourdain en direction de Moab, et ne laissèrent aucun homme s’échapper.
29 And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.	29 En ce temps-là, ils abattirent 10 000 hommes de Moab, tous robustes et entraînés: pas un seul n’échappa.
30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.	30 En ce jour-là, Moab fut soumis à Israël, et le pays fut en paix durant 80 ans.
31 And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.	31 Après lui se leva Chamgar, fils d’Anat. Il abattit 600 hommes de chez les Philistins avec un aiguillon à bœufs; lui aussi fut un libérateur d’Israël.
