Joshua 8

1 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:	1 Yahvé dit alors à Josué: "Sois sans crainte ni frayeur! Prends avec toi tous les gens de guerre. Debout!monte contre Aï. Vois: je livre entre tes mains le roi de Aï, son peuple, sa ville et sa terre.
2 And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.	2 Tu traiteras Aï et son roi comme tu as traité Jéricho et son roi. Vous ne prendrez comme butin que lesdépouilles et le bétail. Aie soin d'établir une embuscade contre la ville, par-derrière."
3 So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.	3 Josué se leva, avec tous les gens de guerre, pour monter contre Aï. Josué choisit 30.000 hommesd'élite et les fit partir de nuit
4 And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:	4 en leur donnant cet ordre: "Attention! vous dresserez une embuscade contre la ville, par-derrière, sansvous éloigner beaucoup de la ville, et soyez tous sur le qui-vive.
5 And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them,	5 Moi et tous les gens qui m'accompagnent, nous nous approcherons de la ville, et lorsque les gens deAï sortiront à notre rencontre comme la première fois, nous prendrons la fuite devant eux.
6 (For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them.	6 Ils nous suivront alors et nous les attirerons loin de la ville, car ils se diront: Ils fuient devant nouscomme la première fois.
7 Then ye shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.	7 Alors vous surgirez de l'embuscade pour prendre possession de la ville: Yahvé votre Dieu la livreraentre vos mains.
8 And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the LORD shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.	8 Une fois la ville prise, vous la livrerez au feu, agissant selon la parole de Yahvé. Voyez, je vous aidonné un ordre."
9 Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.	9 Josué les ayant renvoyés, ils allèrent au lieu de l'embuscade et se postèrent entre Béthel et Aï, à l'ouestde Aï. Josué passa la nuit au milieu du peuple,
10 And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.	10 puis le lendemain, s'étant levé de bon matin, il passa le peuple en revue et, avec les anciens d'Israël,monta vers Aï en tête du peuple.
11 And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.	11 Tous les gens de guerre qui étaient avec lui montèrent, s'approchèrent jusqu'en face de la ville etcampèrent au nord de Aï, la vallée se trouvant entre eux et la ville.
12 And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.	12 Josué prit environ 5.000 hommes et les mit en embuscade entre Béthel et Aï, à l'ouest de la ville.
13 And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.	13 Le peuple dressa l'ensemble du camp qui était au nord de la ville, et son embuscade à l'ouest de laville. Josué alla cette nuit-là au milieu de la plaine.
14 And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.	14 Dès que le roi de Aï eut vu cela, les gens de la ville se hâtèrent de se lever et de sortir pour que lui ettout son peuple aillent à la rencontre d'Israël pour le combattre, sur la descente qui est face à la Araba; mais il nesavait pas qu'il y avait une embuscade dressée contre lui derrière la ville.
15 And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.	15 Josué et tout Israël se firent battre par eux et prirent la fuite sur le chemin du désert.
16 And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.	16 Tout le peuple qui se trouvait dans la ville se mit à leur poursuite à grands cris. En poursuivant Josué,ils s'écartèrent de la ville.
17 And there was not a man left in Ai or Bethel, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.	17 Il ne resta pas un homme dans Aï (ni dans Béthel) qui ne poursuivît Israël: ils laissèrent la villeouverte et poursuivirent Israël.
18 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.	18 Yahvé dit alors à Josué: "Tends vers Aï le sabre que tu as en main, car c'est en ta main que je vais lalivrer." Alors Josué tendit vers la ville le sabre qu'il avait en main.
19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.	19 Et dès qu'il eut étendu la main, ceux de l'embuscade, surgissant en hâte de leur poste, prirent leurcourse, pénétrèrent dans la ville, s'en emparèrent et se hâtèrent de la livrer au feu.
20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.	20 Les gens de Aï se retournèrent et virent: voici que la fumée de la ville montait vers le ciel. Aucund'entre eux ne se sentit le courage de fuir ici ou là, tandis que le peuple en fuite vers le désert se retournait contreceux qui le poursuivaient.
21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.	21 Voyant que ceux de l'embuscade avaient pris la ville et que la fumée montait de la ville, Josué et toutIsraël firent volte-face et attaquèrent les gens de Aï.
22 And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.	22 Les autres sortirent de la ville à leur rencontre, de sorte que les gens de Aï se trouvèrent au milieudes Israélites, ayant les uns d'un côté et les autres de l'autre. Ceux-ci les battirent jusqu'à ce qu'il ne leur restâtplus un survivant ni un rescapé.
23 And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.	23 Mais on prit vivant le roi de Aï et on l'amena à Josué.
24 And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.	24 Quand Israël eut fini de tuer tous les habitants de Aï, dans la campagne et dans le désert où ils lesavaient poursuivis, et que tous jusqu'au dernier furent tombés au fil de l'épée, tout Israël revint à Aï et en passa lapopulation au fil de l'épée.
25 And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.	25 Le total de tous ceux qui tombèrent ce jour-là, tant hommes que femmes, fut de 12.000, tous gens deAï.
26 For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.	26 Josué ne ramena pas la main qu'il avait étendue avec le sabre, jusqu'à ce qu'il eût dévoué àl'anathème tous les habitants de Aï.
27 Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he commanded Joshua.	27 Israël ne prit pour butin que le bétail et les dépouilles de cette ville, selon l'ordre que Yahvé avaitdonné à Josué.
28 And Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever, even a desolation unto this day.	28 Josué incendia Aï et il en fit pour toujours une ruine, un lieu désolé jusqu'aujourd'hui.
29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.	29 Quant au roi de Aï, il le pendit à un arbre jusqu'au soir; mais au coucher du soleil, Josué ordonnaqu'on descendît de l'arbre son cadavre. On le jeta ensuite à l'entrée de la porte de la ville, et on amoncela sur luiun grand tas de pierres, qui existe jusqu'aujourd'hui.
30 Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal,	30 Alors Josué édifia un autel à Yahvé, Dieu d'Israël, sur le mont Ebal,
31 As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.	31 comme Moïse, serviteur de Yahvé, l'avait ordonné aux Israélites, selon qu'il est écrit dans la Loi deMoïse: un autel de pierres brutes que le fer n'aura pas travaillées. Ils y offrirent des holocaustes à Yahvé etimmolèrent des sacrifices de communion.
32 And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.	32 Là, Josué écrivit sur les pierres une copie de la Loi de Moïse, que celui-ci avait écrite devant lesIsraélites.
33 And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.	33 Tout Israël, avec ses anciens, ses scribes et ses juges, se tenait de part et d'autre de l'arche, en facedes prêtres lévites qui portaient l'arche d'alliance de Yahvé, les étrangers comme les citoyens, moitié sur le frontdu mont Garizim et moitié sur le front du mont Ebal, comme Moïse, serviteur de Yahvé, l'avait ordonné pourdonner en premier lieu la bénédiction au peuple d'Israël.
34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.	34 Puis Josué lut toutes les paroles de la Loi -- la bénédiction et la malédiction -- suivant tout ce qui estécrit dans le livre de la Loi.
35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.	35 Il n'y eut pas un mot de tout ce que Moïse avait ordonné qui ne fût lu par Josué en présence de toutel'assemblée d'Israël, y compris les femmes, les enfants et les étrangers qui marchaient au milieu d'eux.
