1 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:	1 El Señor dijo a Josué: «¡No temas ni te acobardes! Reúne a todos los combatientes y prepárate para subir contra Ai. Yo te entrego al rey de Ai, a su pueblo, su ciudad y su territorio.
2 And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.	2 Trátalos como trataste a Jericó y a su rey. Sin embargo, ustedes podrán retener como botín los despojos y el ganado. Además, tiende una emboscada detrás de la ciudad.
3 So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.	3 Josué se preparó con todos los combatientes, para subir contra Ai. Eligió treinta mil guerreros valerosos y los hizo salir de noche,
4 And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:	4 dándoles esta orden: «¡Presten atención! Ustedes estarán emboscados detrás de la ciudad. No se alejen demasiado de ella y manténgase alerta.
5 And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them,	5 Yo y toda la gente que irá conmigo nos acercaremos a la ciudad y cuando ellos salgan contra nosotros, como lo hicieron la primera vez, nosotros huiremos.
6 (For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them.	6 Ellos nos seguirán, porque pensarán que huimos como la vez anterior, y así los apartaremos de la ciudad: Nosotros huiremos delante de ellos.
7 Then ye shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.	7 Entonces ustedes saldrán del lugar donde estaban emboscados y ocuparán la ciudad. El Señor, nuestro Dios, la pondrá en sus manos.
8 And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the LORD shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.	8 Y apenas la tomen, la incendiarán. Ustedes actuarán conforme a la palabra del Señor, y tengan en cuenta que les he dado una orden».
9 Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.	9 Josué los envió, y ellos fueron a apostarse en el lugar de la emboscada, entre Betel y Ai, al oeste de Ai. Josué, por su parte, pasó aquella noche en medio de la tropa.
10 And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.	10 A la madrugada del día siguiente, revistó a la tropa y subió contra Ai, al frente del pueblo, junto con los ancianos de Israel.
11 And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.	11 Todos los combatientes que subieron con él avanzaron hasta llegar frente a la ciudad, y acamparon al norte de Ai. Solamente el valle separaba a Josué de Ai.
12 And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.	12 El escogió unos cinco mil hombres para tender una emboscada entre Betel y Ai, al oeste de Ai.
13 And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.	13 Así el pueblo estableció todo su campamento al norte de la ciudad, mientras la retaguardia permanecía al oeste. Aquella noche Josué se dirigió al medio del valle.
14 And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.	14 El ver esto, el rey de Ai se apresuró a salir con toda su gente para combatir contra Israel en la bajada, frente a la Arabá, sin saber que le habían tendido una emboscada detrás de la ciudad.
15 And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.	15 Josué y todo Israel fingieron caer derrotados delante de ellos y huyeron por el camino del desierto.
16 And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.	16 Entonces se convocó a toda la gente que estaba en la ciudad para que saliera a perseguirlos, y todos persiguieron a Josué, alejándose de la ciudad.
17 And there was not a man left in Ai or Bethel, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.	17 No hubo un solo hombre en Ai o en Betel que no saliera en persecución de Israel. Y cuando lo hicieron, dejaron abiertas las puertas de la ciudad.
18 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.	18 Entonces el Señor dijo a Josué: «Apunta hacia Ai con la jabalina que tienes en la mano, porque yo te entrego la ciudad». Josué apuntó contra la ciudad con la jabalina que tenía en la mano;
19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.	19 y tan pronto como extendió su brazo, los hombres que estaban emboscados salieron rápidamente de su escondite, entraron a la carrera en la ciudad, la tomaron y la incendiaron sin perder un instante.
20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.	20 Cuando los hombres de Ai volvieron la vista hacia atrás y vieron la humareda que subía de la ciudad hacia el cielo, ya no pudieron escapar ni por un lado ni por el otro, porque la gente que huía hacia el desierto se volvió contra sus perseguidores.
21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.	21 En efecto, al ver que los hombres emboscados habían tomado la ciudad y que el humo subía de ella, Josué y todo Israel volvieron atrás y acometieron contra los hombres de Ai.
22 And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.	22 Los que habían tendido la emboscada también salieron de la ciudad para atacarlos, de manera que la gente de Ai quedó atrapada en medio de los israelitas, que avanzaban unos por un lado y otros por el otro. Así los derrotaron sin dejar ningún sobreviviente o fugitivo.
23 And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.	23 Al rey de Ai, en cambio, lo capturaron vivo y lo condujeron ante Josué.
24 And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.	24 Cuando Israel terminó de matar a los habitantes de Ai en campo abierto, en el desierto donde los habían perseguido, y cuando cayó hasta el último de ellos bajo los golpes de las espadas, todo Israel se volvió contra Ai y la pasó al filo de la espada.
25 And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.	25 Los que murieron aquel día, entre hombres y mujeres, fueron doce mil, o sea, todos los habitantes de Ai.
26 For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.	26 Y Josué no retiró la mano con que sostenía la jabalina hasta que consagró al exterminio a todos los habitantes de Ai.
27 Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he commanded Joshua.	27 Israel retuvo como botín solamente el ganado y los despojos de la ciudad, según la orden que el Señor había dado a Josué.
28 And Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever, even a desolation unto this day.	28 Este, por su parte, puso fuego sobre Ai y la redujo para siempre a un montón de ruinas, a una devastación, que permanece hasta el día de hoy.
29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.	29 Al rey de Ai lo hizo colgar de un árbol hasta la tarde. Al ponerse el sol, Josué mandó que descolgaran el cadáver. Lo arrojaron carca de la puerta de la ciudad y levantaron sobre él un gran montón de piedras, que está todavía hoy.
30 Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal,	30 Entonces Josué erigió un altar al Señor, el Dios de Israel, en el monte Ebal,
31 As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.	31 como Moisés, el servidor del Señor, lo había ordenado a los israelitas y como está escrito en el libro de la Ley de Moisés. Era un altar de piedras intactas, que ho habían sido tocadas por el hierro. Sobre él ofrecieron holocaustos al Señor e inmolaron sacrificios de comunión.
32 And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.	32 Josué escribió allí mismo, sobre las piedras, una copia de la Ley que Moisés había escrito en presencia de los israelitas.
33 And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.	33 Todo Israel, sus ancianos, sus escribas y sus jueces –tanto los forasteros como los nativos– estaban de pie a ambos lados del Arca, frente a los sacerdotes que llevaban el Arca de la Alianza del Señor, una mitad hacia el monte Garizim y la otra mitad hacia el monte Ebal, según la orden que había dado Moisés, el servidor del Señor, de bendecir primero al pueblo de Israel.
34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.	34 Después de eso, Josué leyó cada una de las palabras de la Ley –la bendición y la maldición– exactamente como está escrito en el libro de la Ley.
35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.	35 Josué no dejó de leer ni una sola de las palabras que había ordenado Moisés, y lo hizo en presencia de toda la asamblea de Israel, incluidas las mujeres, los niños y los extranjeros que estaban con ellos.
