1 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:	1 Yahvé dit à Josué: “Ne crains pas, n’aie pas peur! Prends avec toi tous les hommes de guerre, et allez attaquer Aï. Sache que j’ai livré entre tes mains le roi d’Aï et son peuple, sa ville et son territoire.
2 And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.	2 Tu traiteras Aï et son roi comme tu as traité Jéricho et son roi, mais vous pourrez prendre le butin: ses dépouilles et son bétail. Prépare donc maintenant une embuscade derrière la ville.”
3 So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.	3 Josué se leva avec tous les hommes de guerre pour attaquer Aï, Josué choisit 30 000 hommes, de courageux guerriers, et les envoya de nuit.
4 And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:	4 Il leur donna cet ordre: “Postez-vous en embuscade tout près de la ville, à l’arrière de celle-ci. Ne soyez pas trop loin et restez à l’affût.
5 And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them,	5 Moi et tout le peuple qui est avec moi, nous nous approcherons de la ville et, quand ils sortiront à notre rencontre comme l’autre fois, nous fuirons devant eux.
6 (For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them.	6 Ils sortiront donc derrière nous et nous les attirerons loin de la ville. Car ils se diront sûrement que nous fuyons devant eux comme l’autre fois.
7 Then ye shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.	7 À ce moment-là vous sortirez de votre embuscade et vous occuperez la ville, puisque Yahvé votre Dieu la livre entre vos mains.
8 And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the LORD shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.	8 Lorsque vous aurez pris la ville, vous y mettrez le feu: voilà mes ordres!”
9 Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.	9 Josué les envoya donc et ils partirent se poster en embuscade entre Béthel et Aï, à l’ouest d’Aï.
10 And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.	10 De bon matin Josué se leva et passa le peuple en revue. Puis, avec les anciens d’Israël, il s’avança contre Aï, à la tête du peuple.
11 And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.	11 Tous les hommes de guerre qui étaient avec lui firent la montée, s’approchèrent et arrivèrent face à Aï. Ils campèrent au nord de la ville, laissant la vallée entre eux et Aï.
12 And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.	12 Josué prit alors 5 000 hommes et les posta en embuscade entre Béthel et Aï, à l’ouest de la ville.
13 And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.	13 Le peuple avait établi son camp au nord de la ville, et l’embuscade était à l’ouest d’Aï. Josué passa la nuit avec le peuple.
14 And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.	14 Voyant cela, le roi d’Aï se leva de bon matin et sortit avec tout son peuple à la rencontre d’Israël pour l’attaquer dans la descente qui mène à la Araba. Ils ne savaient pas qu’une embuscade était préparée contre eux derrière la ville.
15 And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.	15 Josué et tout Israël se laissèrent enfoncer par eux, et ils battirent en retraite par la route du désert.
16 And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.	16 Alors tous les gens qui étaient dans la ville se rassemblèrent pour les poursuivre; ils poursuivirent Josué et se laissèrent attirer loin de la ville.
17 And there was not a man left in Ai or Bethel, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.	17 Finalement il ne resta plus personne dans Aï; tout le monde poursuivait Israël. On avait même laissé la ville ouverte quand on s’était lancé à la poursuite d’Israël.
18 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.	18 Yahvé dit alors à Josué: “Brandis vers Aï le javelot que tu as dans la main, et je vais la livrer entre tes mains.” Josué tendit donc vers la ville le javelot qu’il portait à la main,
19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.	19 et dès qu’il eut fait le geste, ceux qui étaient en embuscade surgirent du lieu où ils se trouvaient. Ils coururent, entrèrent dans la ville et la prirent, puis ils mirent le feu à la ville.
20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.	20 En se retournant, les hommes d’Aï virent la fumée qui montait de la ville vers le ciel. Ils ne savaient plus par où s’échapper, car le peuple qui tout à l’heure fuyait vers le désert, se retournait maintenant contre eux et les poursuivait.
21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.	21 Josué et tout Israël avaient vu que ceux qui étaient en embuscade s’étaient emparés de la ville, car la fumée montait de la ville. Ils revinrent donc et écrasèrent les hommes d’Aï.
22 And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.	22 Ceux-ci se retrouvèrent avec des Israélites des deux côtés, car ceux de l’embuscade sortaient maintenant de la ville à leur rencontre. On les écrasa sans leur laisser un survivant, ni un fuyard.
23 And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.	23 Les Israélites prirent vivant le roi d’Aï et le conduisirent à Josué.
24 And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.	24 Israël acheva de massacrer tous les habitants d’Aï qu’il poursuivait dans la campagne ou dans le désert: tous périrent par l’épée, jusqu’au dernier. Ensuite Israël revint vers Aï et passa la ville au fil de l’épée.
25 And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.	25 Le total de ceux qui tombèrent ce jour-là, hommes ou femmes, fut de 12 000, tous habitants d’Aï.
26 For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.	26 Josué ne ramena sa main qui brandissait le javelot que lorsque tous les habitants d’Aï eurent été voués à l’anathème.
27 Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he commanded Joshua.	27 Alors les Israélites prirent pour eux le bétail et le butin de la ville, comme Yahvé l’avait ordonné à Josué.
28 And Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever, even a desolation unto this day.	28 Josué brûla Aï et il en fit pour toujours un tas de ruines, comme on le voit encore aujourd’hui.
29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.	29 Il fit pendre à un arbre le roi d’Aï et le laissa là jusqu’au soir. Au coucher du soleil Josué commanda de descendre le cadavre de l’arbre; on le jeta à l’entrée de la porte de la ville et on éleva sur lui un grand tas de pierres qui se voit encore aujourd’hui.
30 Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal,	30 Josué dressa alors sur le mont Ébal, un autel en l’honneur de Yahvé, le Dieu d’Israël,
31 As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.	31 C’était un autel de pierres brutes qui n’avaient pas été taillées par le fer, comme Moïse le serviteur de Yahvé l’avait ordonné aux Israélites, et comme il est écrit dans le livre de la Loi de Moïse. On disposa sur l’autel des holocaustes en l’honneur de Yahvé et l’on offrit des sacrifices de communion.
32 And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.	32 Josué écrivit là sur les pierres une copie de la Loi que Moïse avait écrite en présence des Israélites.
33 And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.	33 Tout Israël, avec ses anciens, ses scribes et ses juges, était là rangé sur les deux côtés de l’Arche, faisant face aux prêtres lévites qui portaient l’Arche de l’Alliance de Yahvé. L’étranger s’y mêlait avec l’homme du pays. Une moitié se tenait du côté du mont Garizim, l’autre moitié du côté du mont Ébal, selon l’ordre que Moïse, le serviteur de Yahvé, avait donné autrefois pour la bénédiction du peuple d’Israël.
34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.	34 Josué lut toutes les paroles de la Loi, la bénédiction et la malédiction, comme il est écrit dans le livre de la Loi.
35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.	35 Josué lut les instructions de Moïse, sans aucune exception, en présence de la communauté d’Israël, en présence des femmes, des enfants et des étrangers qui vivaient au milieu d’eux.
