KING JAMES BIBLENEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, to the church of God that is in Corinth, with all the holy ones throughout Achaia:
Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.2 grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and God of all encouragement,
Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.4 who encourages us in our every affliction, so that we may be able to encourage those who are in any affliction with the encouragement with which we ourselves are encouraged by God.
For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.5 For as Christ's sufferings overflow to us, so through Christ does our encouragement also overflow.
And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.6 If we are afflicted, it is for your encouragement and salvation; if we are encouraged, it is for your encouragement, which enables you to endure the same sufferings that we suffer.
And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.7 Our hope for you is firm, for we know that as you share in the sufferings, you also share in the encouragement.
For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:8 We do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction that came to us in the province of Asia; we were utterly weighed down beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life.
But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:9 Indeed, we had accepted within ourselves the sentence of death, that we might trust not in ourselves but in God who raises the dead.
Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;10 He rescued us from such great danger of death, and he will continue to rescue us; in him we have put our hope (that) he will also rescue us again,
Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.11 as you help us with prayer, so that thanks may be given by many on our behalf for the gift granted us through the prayers of many.
For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.12 For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you, with the simplicity and sincerity of God, (and) not by human wisdom but by the grace of God.
For we write none other things unto you, than what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end;13 For we write you nothing but what you can read and understand, and I hope that you will understand completely,
As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are ours in the day of the Lord Jesus.14 as you have come to understand us partially, that we are your boast as you also are ours, on the day of (our) Lord Jesus.
And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit;15 With this confidence I formerly intended to come to you so that you might receive a double favor,
And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea.16 namely, to go by way of you to Macedonia, and then to come to you again on my return from Macedonia, and have you send me on my way to Judea.
When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay?17 So when I intended this, did I act lightly? Or do I make my plans according to human considerations, so that with me it is "yes, yes" and "no, no"?
But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay.18 As God is faithful, our word to you is not "yes" and "no."
For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was proclaimed to you by us, Silvanus and Timothy and me, was not "yes" and "no," but "yes" has been in him.
For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.20 For however many are the promises of God, their Yes is in him; therefore, the Amen from us also goes through him to God for glory.
Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;21 But the one who gives us security with you in Christ and who anointed us is God;
Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.22 he has also put his seal upon us and given the Spirit in our hearts as a first installment.
Moreover I call God for a record upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth.23 But I call upon God as witness, on my life, that it is to spare you that I have not yet gone to Corinth.
Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.24 Not that we lord it over your faith; rather, we work together for your joy, for you stand firm in the faith.
