1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia:	1 Paul, apôtre du Christ Jésus par décision de Dieu, et Timothée, votre frère, saluent l’Église de Dieu qui est à Corinthe et tous les saints qui résident dans la province d’Achaïe.
2 Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.	2 Recevez grâce et paix de Dieu notre Père et du Seigneur Jésus Christ.
3 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;	3 Béni soit Dieu, le Père du Christ Jésus notre Seigneur, le Père plein de tendresse, le Dieu de qui vient tout réconfort!
4 Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.	4 Il nous réconforte quelles que soient nos épreuves, pour qu’à notre tour nous soyons capables de réconforter ceux qui sont éprouvés de quelque manière, à partir du réconfort que nous recevons de Dieu.
5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.	5 Quand les souffrances du Christ retombent sur nous plus abondantes, le réconfort aussi nous vient plus abondant grâce au Christ.
6 And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.	6 Donc, si nous sommes dans la détresse, c’est pour votre réconfort et votre salut; et si nous sommes réconfortés, c’est pour votre réconfort: vous en ferez l’expérience quand vous passerez par les mêmes souffrances que nous.
7 And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.	7 Car c’est notre ferme conviction: si vous partagez la souffrance, vous aurez part aussi au réconfort.
8 For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:	8 Frères, nous ne voulons pas vous cacher l’épreuve que nous avons connue en Asie. Elle était telle que nous nous sentions écrasés et ne pensions pas devoir en sortir vivants.
9 But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:	9 Mais si nous avons entendu en nous-mêmes cette sentence de mort, c’était pour que nous ne comptions plus désormais sur nous-mêmes, mais sur Dieu qui fait revivre les morts.
10 Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;	10 Il nous a délivrés de ces périls de mort, et il nous en délivrera encore. Puisque nous avons mis en lui notre espérance, il nous délivrera encore
11 Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.	11 si vous nous aidez de vos prières. Et comme beaucoup lui auront demandé cette grâce, il voudra que tous puissent lui rendre grâces à notre sujet.
12 For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.	12 Nous avons le droit d’être fiers; notre conscience nous assure que la droiture et la simplicité de Dieu ont guidé tous nos agissements en ce monde, et tout spécialement avec vous. Il n’y avait là aucun calcul humain mais seulement la grâce de Dieu.
13 For we write none other things unto you, than what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end;	13 Quand nous vous écrivons, ce n’est pour rien d’autre que ce que vous pouvez lire et entendre clairement, et j’espère bien que ce sera clair jusqu’à la fin.
14 As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are ours in the day of the Lord Jesus.	14 Déjà vous comprenez, au moins en partie, que vous devez être fiers de nous, comme nous aussi serons fiers de vous au Jour du Seigneur Jésus.
15 And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit;	15 C’était déjà mon sentiment quand je pensais passer d’abord chez vous, et vous auriez été doublement servis,
16 And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea.	16 car je serais parti de chez vous pour faire le tour de la Macédoine, et je serais repassé chez vous en rentrant de Macédoine; ensuite vous m’auriez mis sur la route pour mon retour en Judée.
17 When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay?	17 Ai-je pris cette décision trop vite, sans réfléchir? Ou bien était-ce ma décision, une décision toute humaine où se mêlent du oui et du non?
18 But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay.	18 Non, Dieu est témoin que ce que nous vous disons n’est pas oui et non.
19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.	19 D’ailleurs vous ne trouverez pas du oui et du non dans le Fils de Dieu, Jésus Christ, tel que nous vous l’avons annoncé, Timothée et Silvain et moi-même. Tout en lui a été oui,
20 For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.	20 et grâce à lui toutes les promesses de Dieu sont devenues un oui. Aussi bien nous disons Amen! Oui! pour rendre gloire à Dieu par lui.
21 Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;	21 Dieu lui-même nous a rendus fermes, et vous aussi, pour le service du Christ, quand nous avons reçu l’onction,
22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.	22 quand il nous a marqués de son sceau et a déposé en nos cœurs un premier acompte de l’Esprit.
23 Moreover I call God for a record upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth.	23 Donc, si j’ai renoncé à venir à Corinthe, ç’a été seulement pour vous épargner, et j’en prends Dieu à témoin.
24 Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.	24 Car je ne cherche pas à être un dictateur de la foi, je veux seulement vous apporter la joie. La foi, vous l’avez.
