KING JAMES BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself.1 Later on, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples. It was by the Sea of Tiberias, and it happenedlike this:
There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.2 Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee and twomore of his disciples were together.
Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.3 Simon Peter said, 'I'm going fishing.' They replied, 'We'l come with you.' They went out and got intothe boat but caught nothing that night.
But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.4 When it was already light, there stood Jesus on the shore, though the disciples did not realise that itwas Jesus.
Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No.5 Jesus cal ed out, 'Haven't you caught anything, friends?' And when they answered, 'No,'
And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.6 he said, 'Throw the net out to starboard and you'l find something.' So they threw the net out and couldnot haul it in because of the quantity of fish.
Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.7 The disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, 'It is the Lord.' At these words, 'It is the Lord,' SimonPeter tied his outer garment round him (for he had nothing on) and jumped into the water.
And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.8 The other disciples came on in the boat, towing the net with the fish; they were only about a hundredyards from land.
As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.9 As soon as they came ashore they saw that there was some bread there and a charcoal fire with fishcooking on it.
Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.10 Jesus said, 'Bring some of the fish you have just caught.'
Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, and hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken.11 Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net ashore, full of big fish, one hundred and fifty-three ofthem; and in spite of there being so many the net was not broken.
Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord.12 Jesus said to them, 'Come and have breakfast.' None of the disciples was bold enough to ask, 'Whoare you?'. They knew quite well it was the Lord.
Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise.13 Jesus then stepped forward, took the bread and gave it to them, and the same with the fish.
This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.14 This was the third time that Jesus revealed himself to the disciples after rising from the dead.
So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.15 When they had eaten, Jesus said to Simon Peter, 'Simon son of John, do you love me more thanthese others do?' He answered, 'Yes, Lord, you know I love you.' Jesus said to him, 'Feed my lambs.'
He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.16 A second time he said to him, 'Simon son of John, do you love me?' He replied, 'Yes, Lord, you knowI love you.' Jesus said to him, 'Look after my sheep.'
He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.17 Then he said to him a third time, 'Simon son of John, do you love me?' Peter was hurt that he askedhim a third time, 'Do you love me?' and said, 'Lord, you know everything; you know I love you.' Jesus said to him,'Feed my sheep.
Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.18 In all truth I tell you, when you were young you put on your own belt and walked where you liked; butwhen you grow old you wil stretch out your hands, and somebody else wil put a belt round you and take youwhere you would rather not go.'
This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.19 In these words he indicated the kind of death by which Peter would give glory to God. After this hesaid, 'Fol ow me.'
Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?20 Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved fol owing them -- the one who had leant backclose to his chest at the supper and had said to him, 'Lord, who is it that will betray you?'
Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?21 Seeing him, Peter said to Jesus, 'What about him, Lord?'
Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.22 Jesus answered, 'If I want him to stay behind till I come, what does it matter to you? You are to followme.'
Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?23 The rumour then went out among the brothers that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus had not saidto Peter, 'He wil not die,' but, 'If I want him to stay behind til I come.'
This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.24 This disciple is the one who vouches for these things and has written them down, and we know thathis testimony is true.
And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.25 There was much else that Jesus did; if it were written down in detail, I do not suppose the world itselfwould hold al the books that would be written.
