Deuteronomy 8

1 All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers.	1 Prenez bien garde d'observer tous les préceptes que je vous prescris aujourd'hui, afin que vous puissiez vivre, que vous vous multipliiez de plus en plus, et que vous possédiez le pays où vous allez entrer, promis à vos pères avec serment par le Seigneur.
2 And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.	2 Vous vous souviendrez de tout le chemin par où le Seigneur votre Dieu vous a conduits dans le désert pendant quarante ans, pour vous punir et vous éprouver, afin que ce qui était caché dans votre coeur fût découvert, et que l'on connût si vous seriez fidèle ou infidèle à observer Ses commandements.
3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.	3 Il vous a affligé de la faim, et Il vous a donné pour nourriture la manne qui était inconnue à vous et à vos pères, pour vous faire voir que l'homme ne vit pas seulement de pain, mais de toute parole qui sort de la bouche de Dieu.
4 Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.	4 Voici la quarantième année que vous êtes en chemin, et cependant les habits dont vous étiez couvert ne sont point rompus par la longueur de ce temps, et les souliers que vous aviez à vos pieds ne se sont point usés.
5 Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.	5 Pensez donc en vous-même que le Seigneur votre Dieu S'est appliqué à vous instruire, comme un homme s'applique à instruire son fils;
6 Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.	6 afin que vous observiez les commandements du Seigneur votre Dieu, que vous marchiez dans Ses voies, et que vous soyiez pénétré de Sa crainte.
7 For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;	7 Car le Seigneur votre Dieu va vous introduire dans une bonne terre, dans une terre pleine de ruisseaux, d'étangs et de fontaines, où les sources des fleuves répandent leurs eaux en abondance dans les plaines et le long des montagnes;
8 A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey;	8 dans une terre qui produit du froment, de l'orge et des vignes; où naissent les figuiers, les grenadiers, les oliviers; dans une terre d'huile et de miel,
9 A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass.	9 où vous mangerez votre pain sans que vous en manquiez jamais, où vous serez dans une abondance de toutes choses; une terre, dont les pierres sont du fer, et des montagnes desquelles on tire les métaux d'airain;
10 When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.	10 afin qu'après avoir mangé et vous être rassasié, vous bénissiez le Seigneur votre Dieu qui vous aura donné une si excellente terre.
11 Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:	11 Prenez garde avec grand soin de n'oublier jamais le Seigneur votre Dieu, et de ne point négliger Ses préceptes, Ses lois et Ses cérémonies, que je vous prescris aujourd'hui;
12 Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;	12 de peur qu'après que vous aurez mangé et que vous vous serez rassasié, que vous aurez bâti de belles maisons, et que vous vous y serez établi,
13 And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;	13 que vous aurez eu des troupeaux de boeufs et des troupeaux de brebis, et une abondance d'or et d'argent et de toutes choses,
14 Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;	14 votre coeur ne s'élève, et que vous ne vous souveniez plus du Seigneur votre Dieu, qui vous a tiré du pays d'Egypte, de la maison de servitude;
15 Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;	15 qui a été votre conducteur dans un désert vaste et affreux, où il y avait des serpents qui brûlaient par leur souffle, des scorpions et des dipsades, et où il n'y avait aucune eau; qui a fait sortir des ruisseaux de la pierre la plus dure;
16 Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;	16 qui vous a nourri dans cette solitude de la manne inconnue à vos pères, et qui, après vous avoir puni et vous avoir éprouvé, a eu enfin pitié de vous;
17 And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.	17 afin que vous ne disiez point dans votre coeur: C'est par ma propre puissance et par la force de mon bras que je me suis acquis toutes ces choses;
18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.	18 mais que vous vous souveniez que c'est le Seigneur votre Dieu qui vous a donné Lui-même toute votre force, pour accomplir ainsi l'alliance qu'Il a jurée avec vos pères, comme vous le voyez aujourd'hui.
19 And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.	19 Mais si, oubliant le Seigneur votre Dieu, vous suivez des dieux étrangers, et que vous les serviez et les adoriez, je vous prédis dès maintenant que vous serez tout à fait détruit.
20 As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God.	20 Vous périrez misérablement, comme les nations que le Seigneur a détruites à votre entrée, si vous êtes désobéissants à la voix du Seigneur votre Dieu.
