1 When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;	1 Yahvé ton Dieu va te faire entrer dans le pays dont tu prendras possession. Devant toi il chassera de nombreuses peuplades: les Hittites, les Guirgachites, les Amorites, les Cananéens, les Périsites, les Hivvites et les Jébusites, sept nations plus nombreuses et plus fortes que toi.
2 And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them:	2 Lorsque Yahvé ton Dieu les aura livrés entre tes mains et que tu les auras écrasés, tu les voueras à l’anathème. Tu ne concluras pas d’alliance avec eux et tu n’auras pas pitié d’eux.
3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.	3 Tu ne feras pas de mariage avec ces gens, tu ne donneras pas ta fille à l’un de leurs fils, et tu ne prendras pas pour ton fils une de leurs filles.
4 For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.	4 Car elle détournerait ton fils de me suivre et il en viendrait à suivre d’autres dieux. Alors la colère de Yahvé s’enflammerait contre vous, et il vous ferait bien vite disparaître.
5 But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.	5 Voici au contraire ce que vous leur ferez: vous démolirez leurs autels, vous renverserez leurs pierres dressées, vous abattrez leurs pieux sacrés et vous jetterez au feu leurs idoles.
6 For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.	6 Tu es un peuple consacré à Yahvé ton Dieu. Il t’a choisi pour que tu sois son peuple à lui entre tous les peuples de la terre.
7 The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:	7 Si Yahvé s’est attaché à vous et vous a choisis, ce n’est pas que vous soyez plus nombreux que les autres peuples, au contraire vous êtes le plus petit de tous les peuples.
8 But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.	8 Mais c’est parce que Yahvé vous aime, parce qu’il a voulu tenir la promesse qu’il avait faite à vos pères. Alors, Yahvé vous a fait sortir par sa main puissante, il vous a libérés de la maison de l’esclavage, de la main du Pharaon, roi d’Égypte.
9 Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;	9 Reconnais donc que c’est Yahvé ton Dieu qui est Dieu. Il est le Dieu fidèle qui maintient son Alliance et sa faveur jusqu’à mille générations pour ceux qui l’aiment et qui gardent ses commandements.
10 And repayeth them that hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hateth him, he will repay him to his face.	10 Mais il punit sans tarder ceux qui le détestent et il se retourne contre eux.
11 Thou shalt therefore keep the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which I command thee this day, to do them.	11 Aussi tu observeras les commandements, les lois et les ordonnances que je te donne aujourd’hui et tu les mettras en pratique.
12 Wherefore it shall come to pass, if ye hearken to these judgments, and keep, and do them, that the LORD thy God shall keep unto thee the covenant and the mercy which he sware unto thy fathers:	12 Si tu écoutes les commandements de Yahvé ton Dieu, si tu les gardes et les mets en pratique, lui à son tour te gardera l’Alliance et la faveur qu’il a promises par serment à tes pères.
13 And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee.	13 Il t’aimera, il te bénira, il te multipliera. Il bénira le fruit de tes entrailles et le fruit de ton sol, ton blé, ta vigne et ton huile fraîche, les petits de tes vaches et de tes brebis, sur la terre qu’il a promise à tes pères de te donner.
14 Thou shalt be blessed above all people: there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle.	14 Tu seras béni plus que tous les autres peuples. Il n’y aura chez toi ni bête stérile, ni femme stérile.
15 And the LORD will take away from thee all sickness, and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, upon thee; but will lay them upon all them that hate thee.	15 Yahvé détournera de toi toute maladie, toutes ces redoutables épidémies que tu as connues en Égypte. Il les chassera loin de toi et il les enverra sur tous ceux qui le détestent.
16 And thou shalt consume all the people which the LORD thy God shall deliver thee; thine eye shall have no pity upon them: neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee.	16 Tu extermineras tous les peuples que Yahvé ton Dieu te livrera: pour eux ton œil sera sans pitié. Et tu ne serviras pas leurs dieux, car ils seraient un piège pour toi.
17 If thou shalt say in thine heart, These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?	17 Tu diras peut-être: ‘Ces peuplades sont plus nombreuses que moi, comment pourrai-je les chasser?’
18 Thou shalt not be afraid of them: but shalt well remember what the LORD thy God did unto Pharaoh, and unto all Egypt;	18 Ne crains pas! Rappelle-toi ce que Yahvé ton Dieu a fait au Pharaon et à toute l’Égypte.
19 The great temptations which thine eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the stretched out arm, whereby the LORD thy God brought thee out: so shall the LORD thy God do unto all the people of whom thou art afraid.	19 Rappelle-toi les grandes épreuves que tes yeux ont vues, les signes et les prodiges par lesquels Yahvé ton Dieu t’a fait sortir à main forte, en frappant de grands coups. Yahvé ton Dieu fera de même à l’égard de tous les peuples devant lesquels tu trembles.
20 Moreover the LORD thy God will send the hornet among them, until they that are left, and hide themselves from thee, be destroyed.	20 Il enverra même contre eux les frelons, pour faire mourir ceux qui resteraient encore ou qui se seraient cachés devant toi.
21 Thou shalt not be affrighted at them: for the LORD thy God is among you, a mighty God and terrible.	21 Tu ne trembleras donc pas devant eux, car Yahvé ton Dieu est au milieu de toi, et c’est un Dieu grand et terrible.
22 And the LORD thy God will put out those nations before thee by little and little: thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.	22 Yahvé ton Dieu chassera peu à peu ces peuplades devant toi; il ne faudrait pas que tu les supprimes rapidement, sinon les bêtes sauvages se multiplieraient pour ton malheur.
23 But the LORD thy God shall deliver them unto thee, and shall destroy them with a mighty destruction, until they be destroyed.	23 Yahvé ton Dieu te les livrera et les mettra en fuite jusqu’à ce qu’elles aient disparu.
24 And he shall deliver their kings into thine hand, and thou shalt destroy their name from under heaven: there shall no man be able to stand before thee, until thou have destroyed them.	24 Il livrera leurs rois entre tes mains et tu effaceras leurs noms de dessous les cieux. Nul ne tiendra devant toi jusqu’au jour où tu les auras fait disparaître.
25 The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the LORD thy God.	25 Vous jetterez au feu les idoles de leurs dieux. Tu ne rechercheras pas l’argent ni l’or dont elles sont recouvertes, tu ne prendras rien pour toi. Car c’est une horreur au regard de Yahvé ton Dieu, et cela deviendrait vite un piège pour toi.
26 Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.	26 Tu ne dois pas le faire entrer dans ta maison car c’est une chose maudite; sinon toi aussi tu serais maudit. Tu dois avoir tout cela en horreur, tu dois le détester, car c’est maudit.
