Numbers 14

KING JAMES BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.	1 Alors toute la communauté éleva la voix; ils poussèrent des cris; et cette nuit-là le peuple pleura.
2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!	2 Tous les Israélites murmurèrent contre Moïse et Aaron, et la communauté tout entière leur dit:"Que ne sommes-nous morts au pays d'Egypte! Que ne sommes-nous morts du moins en ce désert!
3 And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?	3 Pourquoi Yahvé nous mène-t-il en ce pays pour nous faire tomber sous l'épée, pour livrer enbutin nos femmes et nos enfants? Ne vaudrait-il pas mieux retourner en Egypte?"
4 And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.	4 Et ils se disaient l'un à l'autre: "Donnons-nous un chef et retournons en Egypte."
5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.	5 Devant toute la communauté assemblée des Israélites, Moïse et Aaron tombèrent la face contreterre.
6 And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:	6 De ceux qui avaient exploré le pays, Josué, fils de Nûn, et Caleb, fils de Yephunné, déchirèrentleurs vêtements.
7 And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.	7 Ils dirent à toute la communauté des Israélites: "Le pays que nous sommes allés reconnaître estun bon, un très bon pays.
8 If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.	8 Si Yahvé nous est favorable, il nous fera entrer en ce pays et nous le donnera. C'est une terre quiruisselle de lait et de miel.
9 Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not.	9 Mais ne regimbez pas contre Yahvé. Et n'ayez pas peur, vous, du peuple de ce pays, car nous n'enferons qu'une bouchée. Leur ombre protectrice les a quittés, tandis que Yahvé est avec nous. N'en ayez donc paspeur."
10 But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.	10 La communauté tout entière parlait de les lapider quand la gloire de Yahvé apparut, dans laTente du Rendez-vous, à tous les Israélites.
11 And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?	11 Et Yahvé dit à Moïse: "Jusques à quand ce peuple va-t-il me mépriser? Jusques à quandrefusera-t-il de croire en moi, malgré les signes que j'ai produits chez lui?
12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.	12 Je vais le frapper de la peste, je le déposséderai. Mais de toi, je ferai une nation, plus grande etplus puissante que lui."
13 And Moses said unto the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)	13 Moïse répondit à Yahvé: "Mais les Egyptiens ont appris que, par ta propre force, tu as fait sortirde chez eux ce peuple.
14 And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou LORD art among this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.	14 Ils l'ont dit aux habitants de ce pays. Ils ont appris que toi, Yahvé, tu es au milieu de ce peuple, àqui tu te fais voir face à face; que c'est toi, Yahvé, dont la nuée se tient au-dessus d'eux; que tu marches devanteux le jour dans une colonne de nuée, la nuit dans une colonne de feu.
15 Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,	15 Si tu fais périr ce peuple comme un seul homme, les nations qui ont entendu parler de toi s'envont dire:
16 Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.	16 Yahvé n'a pas pu faire entrer ce peuple dans le pays qu'il lui avait promis par serment, aussi l'a-t-il massacré au désert.
17 And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,	17 Non, que maintenant ta force, mon Seigneur, se déploie! Selon ta parole:
18 The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.	18 Yahvé est lent à la colère et riche en bonté, il tolère faute et transgression, mais il ne laisse rienimpuni, lui qui châtie la faute des pères sur les enfants jusqu'à la troisième et la quatrième génération.
19 Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.	19 Pardonne donc la faute de ce peuple selon la grandeur de ta bonté, tout comme tu l'as traitédepuis l'Egypte jusqu'ici."
20 And the LORD said, I have pardoned according to thy word:	20 Yahvé dit: "Je lui pardonne, comme tu l'as dit.
21 But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.	21 Mais -- je suis vivant! et la gloire de Yahvé remplit toute la terre! --
22 Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;	22 tous ces hommes qui ont vu ma gloire et les signes que j'ai produits en Egypte et au désert, ceshommes qui m'ont déjà dix fois mis à l'épreuve sans obéir à ma voix,
23 Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:	23 ne verront pas le pays que j'ai promis par serment à leurs pères. Aucun de ceux qui meméprisent ne le verra.
24 But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.	24 Mais mon serviteur Caleb, puisqu'un autre esprit l'a animé et qu'il m'a parfaitement obéi, je leferai entrer dans le pays où il est allé, et sa descendance le possédera.
25 (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) To morrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.	25 (Les Amalécites et les Cananéens habitent dans la plaine.) Demain, faites demi-tour et retournezau désert, dans la direction de la mer de Suph."
26 And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,	26 Yahvé parla à Moïse et à Aaron. Il dit:
27 How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.	27 "Jusques à quand cette communauté perverse qui murmure contre moi? J'ai entendu les plaintesque murmurent contre moi les Israélites.
28 Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:	28 Dis-leur: Par ma vie -- oracle de Yahvé -- je vous traiterai selon les paroles mêmes que vousavez prononcées à mes oreilles.
29 Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me,	29 Vos cadavres tomberont dans ce désert, vous tous les recensés, vous tous qu'on a dénombrésdepuis l'âge de vingt ans et au-dessus, vous qui avez murmuré contre moi.
30 Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.	30 Je jure que vous n'entrerez pas dans ce pays où, levant la main, j'avais fait serment de vousétablir. Mais c'est Caleb, fils de Yephunné, c'est Josué, fils de Nûn,
31 But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.	31 ce sont vos petits enfants dont vous avez dit qu'ils seraient livrés en butin, ce sont eux que j'yferai entrer et qui connaîtront le pays que vous avez dédaigné.
32 But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness.	32 Pour vous, vos cadavres tomberont dans ce désert,
33 And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.	33 et vos fils seront nomades dans le désert pendant 40 ans, portant le poids de votre infidélité,jusqu'à ce que vos cadavres soient au complet dans le désert.
34 After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.	34 Vous avez reconnu le pays pendant 40 jours. Chaque jour vaut une année: 40 ans vous porterezle poids de vos fautes, et vous saurez ce que c'est que m'abandonner.
35 I the LORD have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.	35 J'ai parlé, moi, Yahvé; c'est ainsi que je traiterai toute cette communauté perverse réunie contremoi. Dans ce désert même il n'en manquera pas un, c'est là qu'ils mourront."
36 And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land,	36 Ces hommes que Moïse avait envoyés reconnaître le pays et qui, à leur tour, avaient excité toutela communauté d'Israël à murmurer contre lui en décriant le pays,
37 Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the LORD.	37 ces hommes qui décriaient malignement le pays furent frappés de mort devant Yahvé.
38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still.	38 Des hommes qui étaient allés reconnaître le pays, seuls Josué, fils de Nûn, et Caleb, fils deYephunné, restèrent en vie.
39 And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.	39 Moïse rapporta ces paroles à tous les Israélites et le peuple fit de grandes lamentations.
40 And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned.	40 Puis, s'étant levés de bon matin, ils montèrent vers le sommet de la montagne, en disant: "Nousvoici qui montons vers ce lieu, à propos duquel Yahvé a dit que nous avions péché."
41 And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper.	41 Moïse répondit: "Pourquoi transgressez-vous l'ordre de Yahvé? Cela ne réussira pas.
42 Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.	42 Ne montez point, car Yahvé n'est pas au milieu de vous; ne vous faites pas battre par vosennemis.
43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you.	43 Oui, les Amalécites et les Cananéens sont là en face de vous, et vous tomberez sous l'épée,parce que vous vous êtes détournés de Yahvé et que Yahvé n'est pas avec vous."
44 But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.	44 Ils montèrent pourtant, dans leur présomption, au sommet de la montagne. Ni l'arche del'alliance de Yahvé ni Moïse ne quittèrent le camp.
45 Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.	45 Les Amalécites et les Cananéens qui habitaient cette montagne descendirent, les battirent et lestaillèrent en pièces jusqu'à Horma.
