1 And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.	1 Toute la communauté se mit à pousser des cris déchirants, et le peuple passa toute sa nuit à pleurer.
2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!	2 Les Israélites s’emportèrent contre Moïse et Aaron, et toute la communauté leur dit: “Pourquoi ne sommes-nous pas morts en Égypte? Pourquoi ne sommes-nous pas morts dans ce désert?
3 And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?	3 Pourquoi Yahvé nous conduit-il vers ce pays? Pour y être tués par l’épée et pour que nos femmes et nos petits-enfants deviennent des esclaves? Ne vaudrait-il pas mieux pour nous retourner en Égypte?”
4 And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.	4 Et ils se disaient l’un à l’autre: “Donnons-nous un chef et retournons en Égypte.”
5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.	5 Moïse et Aaron tombèrent la face contre terre en présence de toute la communauté des Israélites.
6 And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:	6 Quant à Josué, fils de Noun, et Caleb, fils de Yéfouné, qui faisaient partie des espions, ils déchirèrent leurs habits.
7 And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.	7 Puis ils s’adressèrent à toute la communauté des Israélites: “Le pays par où nous sommes passés, et que nous avons exploré est bon! C’est une terre excellente!
8 If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.	8 Si Yahvé nous veut du bien, il nous mènera vers ce pays et il nous donnera cette terre qui ruisselle de lait et de miel.
9 Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not.	9 Mais ne vous révoltez pas contre Yahvé! N’ayez pas peur de la population de ce pays, car ils nous seront livrés en pâture. Ils n’ont plus rien à espérer, car Yahvé est avec nous. N’ayez donc pas peur d’eux.”
10 But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.	10 Toute la communauté parlait de les lapider, lorsque la Gloire de Yahvé apparut devant les Israélites, dans la Tente du Rendez-Vous.
11 And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?	11 Yahvé dit à Moïse: “Combien de temps encore ce peuple va-t-il me mépriser? Jusques à quand manquera-t-il de confiance en moi après tous les signes que j’ai faits au milieu de lui?
12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.	12 Je veux le frapper de la peste et l’exterminer, puis je ferai sortir de toi une nation plus grande et plus puissante que lui.”
13 And Moses said unto the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)	13 Moïse dit à Yahvé: “Les Égyptiens savent avec quelle force tu as fait monter ce peuple de chez eux
14 And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou LORD art among this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.	14 et ils l’ont dit aux habitants de ce pays. Ces gens savent que tu es au milieu de ce peuple, toi Yahvé qui lui es apparu face à face, toi Yahvé qui te tiens au milieu d’eux dans la nuée, qui marches devant eux dans une colonne de nuée le jour et dans une colonne de feu la nuit.
15 Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,	15 Et aujourd’hui tu voudrais faire mourir ce peuple comme un seul homme? “Mais alors les nations qui ont entendu parler de toi vont dire:
16 Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.	16 ‘Yahvé n’était pas capable de conduire ce peuple au pays qu’il avait juré de leur donner, c’est pourquoi il les a tués dans le désert.’
17 And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,	17 Montre plutôt ta force, Mon Seigneur! Tu as bien dit:
18 The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.	18 ‘Yahvé est patient et riche en miséricorde. Il supporte la faute et le péché, et cependant il ne laisse pas passer la faute, car il punit la faute des pères sur leurs fils, leurs petits-fils et leurs arrière-petits-fils.’
19 Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.	19 Pardonne donc la faute de ce peuple avec cette grande miséricorde et cette patience que tu as eue envers lui, depuis sa sortie d’Égypte jusqu’à aujourd’hui.”
20 And the LORD said, I have pardoned according to thy word:	20 Yahvé répondit: “Comme tu l’as demandé, je pardonne.
21 But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.	21 Mais aussi vrai que je suis vivant, et que la Gloire de Yahvé remplit la terre entière,
22 Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;	22 malheur à tous ces hommes! Car ils ont vu ma Gloire et mes signes, ils ont vu ce que j’ai fait en Égypte et dans le désert, et malgré cela ils m’ont mis à l’épreuve plus de dix fois et ne m’ont pas écouté.
23 Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:	23 C’est pourquoi ils ne verront pas le pays que j’ai promis à leurs pères par serment; aucun de ceux qui me méprisent ne le verra.
24 But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.	24 Mais je ferai entrer mon serviteur Caleb dans ce pays où il est déjà entré et je le donnerai à sa postérité, car il a un tout autre esprit et il m’a suivi sans hésiter.
25 (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) To morrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.	25 “Maintenant, comme Amalec et Canaan habitent la vallée, faites demi-tour demain et repartez vers le désert, sur la route de la mer des Joncs.”
26 And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,	26 Yahvé dit à Moïse et Aaron:
27 How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.	27 “Combien de temps cela va-t-il durer, cette méchante communauté et ces gens qui murmurent contre moi? Oui, j’ai entendu leurs murmures, les murmures des Israélites contre moi.
28 Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:	28 Dis-leur: Aussi vrai que Yahvé est vivant, je vais vous prendre au mot, et comme vous venez de le dire à mes oreilles,
29 Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, which have murmured against me,	29 c’est dans ce désert que tomberont vos cadavres. Tous autant que vous êtes, vous avez murmuré contre moi: eh bien, vous tous que l’on a recensés, depuis l’âge de vingt ans et au-dessus,
30 Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.	30 vous n’entrerez pas dans le pays que j’ai juré par serment de vous donner. Il n’y aura d’exception que pour Caleb, fils de Yéfouné, et Josué, fils de Noun.
31 But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.	31 “Ce sont vos petits-enfants que je ferai entrer, ceux dont vous avez dit qu’ils seraient livrés en esclavage; eux connaîtront le pays que vous avez méprisé.
32 But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness.	32 Vos cadavres à vous, tomberont dans le désert,
33 And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.	33 et vos fils seront des nomades dans le désert pendant quarante ans. Ils porteront le poids de votre infidélité jusqu’à ce que le désert ait recueilli la totalité de vos cadavres.
34 After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.	34 “Vous avez mis quarante jours à explorer le pays; chaque jour comptera pour une année. Vous porterez donc le poids de votre péché pendant quarante ans et vous saurez ce qu’est ma colère!
35 I the LORD have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.	35 Voilà comment je traiterai cette méchante communauté qui s’est liguée contre moi. C’est moi, Yahvé, qui le dis: dans ce désert ils disparaîtront, c’est là qu’ils mourront.”
36 And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land,	36 Ces hommes que Moïse avait envoyés pour explorer le pays et qui, à leur retour, avaient dressé contre lui toute la communauté en décriant le pays,
37 Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the LORD.	37 ces hommes qui avaient critiqué le pays avec un mauvais esprit, moururent d’un fléau devant Yahvé.
38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still.	38 Josué, fils de Noun et Caleb, fils de Yéfouné, furent les seuls à survivre parmi tous ceux qui étaient allés explorer le pays.
39 And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.	39 Moïse rapporta tout cela aux Israélites et le peuple en fut consterné.
40 And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned.	40 De bon matin ils décidèrent de gravir la montagne; car ils disaient: “Nous avons péché! Il nous faut monter à cet endroit que Yahvé nous a promis.”
41 And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper.	41 Mais Moïse leur dit: “Voulez-vous de nouveau désobéir aux ordres de Yahvé? Vous ne réussirez pas.
42 Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.	42 Ne montez pas, car Yahvé n’est pas au milieu de vous; ne vous exposez donc pas aux coups de vos ennemis.
43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you.	43 Amalec et Canaan sont là devant vous et vous périrez par l’épée, parce que vous vous êtes détournés de Yahvé et Yahvé ne sera pas avec vous.”
44 But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.	44 Ils s’obstinèrent cependant à monter au sommet de la montagne, alors que l’Arche de l’Alliance de Yahvé et Moïse restaient à l’intérieur du camp.
45 Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.	45 Mais Amalec et Canaan descendirent de leur montagne; ils les battirent et les écrasèrent jusqu’à Horma.
