KING JAMES BIBLENOVA VULGATA
Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,1 Et factum est verbum Do mini ad me dicens:
Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man of their coasts, and set him for their watchman:2 “ Fili ho minis, loqueread filios populi tui et dices ad eos: Terra, cum induxero super eam gladium, ettulerit populus terrae virum unum de finibus suis et constituerit eum sibispeculatorem,
If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people;3 et ille viderit gladium venientem super terram et cecineritbucina et annuntiaverit populo;
Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.4 audiens autem quisquis ille est sonum bucinae,non se observaverit, veneritque gladius et tulerit eum: sanguis ipsius supercaput eius erit;
He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul.5 sonum bucinae audivit et non se observavit, sanguis eius inipso erit. Si autem se custodierit, animam suam salvavit.
But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand.6 Quod si speculatorviderit gladium venientem et non insonuerit bucina, et populus non secustodierit; veneritque gladius et tulerit de eis animam: ille quidem ininiquitate sua captus est, sanguinem autem eius de manu speculatoris requiram.
So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me.7 Te autem, fili hominis, speculatorem dedi domui Israel. Audiens ergo ex oremeo sermonem, commonebis eos ex me.
When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.8 Si, me dicente ad impium: Impie, mortemorieris, non fueris locutus, ut se custodiat impius a via sua, ipse impius ininiquitate sua morietur, sanguinem autem eius de manu tua requiram.
Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.9 Si autemcommonueris impium, ut a viis suis convertatur, et ille non fuerit conversus avia sua, ipse in iniquitate sua morietur, porro tu animam tuam liberasti.
Therefore, O thou son of man, speak unto the house of Israel; Thus ye speak, saying, If our transgressions and our sins be upon us, and we pine away in them, how should we then live?10 Tu ergo, fili hominis, dic ad domum Israel: Sic locuti estis, dicentes: “Iniquitatesnostrae et peccata nostra super nos sunt, et in ipsis nos tabescimus; quomodoergo vivere poterimus?”.
Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?11 Dic ad eos: Vivo ego, dicit Dominus Deus; nolomortem impii, sed ut revertatur impius a via sua et vivat. Convertimini,convertimini a viis vestris pessimis; et quare moriemini, domus Israel?
Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth.12 Tu itaque, fili hominis, dic ad filios populi tui: Iustitia iusti nonliberabit eum in quacumque die praevaricatus fuerit; et impietas impii nonnocebit ei in quacumque die conversus fuerit ab impietate sua; et iustus nonpoterit vivere in iustitia sua in quacumque die peccaverit.
When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.13 Etiamsi dixeroiusto quod vita vivat, et, confisus in iustitia sua, fecerit iniquitatem, omnesiustitiae eius oblivioni tradentur, et in iniquitate sua, quam operatus est, inipsa morietur.
Again, when I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right;14 Sin autem dixero impio: Morte morieris, et egerit paenitentiama peccato suo feceritque iudicium et iustitiam,
If the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.15 pignus restituerit illeimpius rapinamque reddiderit, in mandatis vitae ambulaverit nec fecerit quidquaminiustum, vita vivet et non morietur;
None of his sins that he hath committed shall be mentioned unto him: he hath done that which is lawful and right; he shall surely live.16 omnia peccata eius, quae peccavit, nonimputabuntur ei: iudicium et iustitiam fecit, vita vivet.
Yet the children of thy people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal.17 Et dicunt filii populi tui: “Non est aequa via Domini”; et ipsorum viainiqua est.
When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall even die thereby.18 Cum enim recesserit iustus a iustitia sua feceritque iniquitates,morietur in eis;
But if the wicked turn from his wickedness, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby.19 et cum recesserit impius ab impietate sua feceritqueiudicium et iustitiam, vivet in eis.
Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O ye house of Israel, I will judge you every one after his ways.20 Et dicitis: “Non est recta via Domini”.Unumquemque iuxta vias suas iudicabo de vobis, domus Israel ”.
And it came to pass in the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, in the fifth day of the month, that one that had escaped out of Jerusalem came unto me, saying, The city is smitten.21 Et factum est in duodecimo anno, in decimo, in quinta mensis transmigrationisnostrae, venit ad me, qui fugerat de Ierusalem, dicens: “ Vastata est civitas”.
Now the hand of the LORD was upon me in the evening, afore he that was escaped came; and had opened my mouth, until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no more dumb.22 Manus autem Domini facta fuerat ad me vespere, antequam veniret quifugerat; aperuitque os meum, donec veniret ad me mane, et, aperto ore meo, nonsilui amplius.
Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,23 Et factum est verbum Domini ad me dicens:
Son of man, they that inhabit those wastes of the land of Israel speak, saying, Abraham was one, and he inherited the land: but we are many; the land is given us for inheritance.24 “ Fili hominis,qui habitant in ruinosis his super humum Israel, loquentes aiunt: “Unus eratAbraham et hereditate possedit terram; nos autem multi, nobis data est terra inpossessionem”.
Wherefore say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Ye eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes toward your idols, and shed blood: and shall ye possess the land?25 Idcirco dices ad eos: Haec dicit Dominus Deus: Qui insanguine comeditis et oculos vestros levatis ad idola vestra et sanguinemfunditis, numquid terram hereditate possidebitis?
Ye stand upon your sword, ye work abomination, and ye defile every one his neighbour's wife: and shall ye possess the land?26 Stetistis in gladiisvestris, fecistis abominationes, et unusquisque uxorem proximi sui polluit, etterram hereditate possidebitis?
Say thou thus unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; As I live, surely they that are in the wastes shall fall by the sword, and him that is in the open field will I give to the beasts to be devoured, and they that be in the forts and in the caves shall die of the pestilence.27 Haec dices ad eos: Sic dicit Dominus Deus:Vivo ego, qui in ruinosis habitant, gladio cadent; et, qui in agro est, bestiistradetur ad devorandum; qui autem in praesidiis et in speluncis sunt, pestemorientur.
For I will lay the land most desolate, and the pomp of her strength shall cease; and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, that none shall pass through.28 Et dabo terram in solitudinem et desertum, et deficiet superbafortitudo eius, et desolabuntur montes Israel, ita ut nullus sit qui per eostranseat;
Then shall they know that I am the LORD, when I have laid the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed.29 et scient quia ego Dominus, cum dedero terram desolatam et desertampropter universas abominationes suas, quas operati sunt.
Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD.30 Et tu, fili hominis, filii populi tui, qui loquuntur de te iuxta parietes etin ostiis domorum et dicunt unus ad alterum, vir ad fratrem suum, loquentes: “Veniteet audite, qui sit sermo egrediens a Domino”.
And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.31 Et veniunt ad te quasi siconveniat populus, et sedent coram te populus meus; et audiunt sermones tuos etnon faciunt eos, quia quasi amatores loquuntur, et avaritiam suam sequitur coreorum.
And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.32 Et es eis quasi carmen amatorum, quod suavi voce et cum dulcichordarum sono canitur, et audiunt verba tua et non faciunt ea.
And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them.33 Et cumvenerit, quod praedictum est — ecce enim venit — tunc scient quod prophetesfuerit inter eos ”.
