KING JAMES BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
O Lord, Father and Governor of all my whole life, leave me not to their counsels, and let me not fall by them.1 And let not the naming of God be usual in thy mouth, and meddle not with the names of saints, for thou shalt not escape free from them.
Who will set scourges over my thoughts, and the discipline of wisdom over mine heart? that they spare me not for mine ignorances, and it pass not by my sins:2 dummy verses inserted by amos
Lest mine ignorances increase, and my sins abound to my destruction, and I fall before mine adversaries, and mine enemy rejoice over me, whose hope is far from thy mercy.3 dummy verses inserted by amos
O Lord, Father and God of my life, give me not a proud look, but turn away from thy servants always a haughty mind.4 dummy verses inserted by amos
Turn away from me vain hopes and concupiscence, and thou shalt hold him up that is desirous always to serve thee.5 dummy verses inserted by amos
Let not the greediness of the belly nor lust of the flesh take hold of me; and give not over me thy servant into an impudent mind.6 dummy verses inserted by amos
Hear, O ye children, the discipline of the mouth: he that keepeth it shall never be taken in his lips.7 dummy verses inserted by amos
The sinner shall be left in his foolishness: both the evil speaker and the proud shall fall thereby.8 dummy verses inserted by amos
Accustom not thy mouth to swearing; neither use thyself to the naming of the Holy One.9 dummy verses inserted by amos
For as a servant that is continually beaten shall not be without a blue mark: so he that sweareth and nameth God continually shall not be faultless.10 dummy verses inserted by amos
A man that useth much swearing shall be filled with iniquity, and the plague shall never depart from his house: if he shall offend, his sin shall be upon him: and if he acknowledge not his sin, he maketh a double offence: and if he swear in vain, he shall not be innocent, but his house shall be full of calamities.11 For as a slave daily put to the question, is never without a blue mark: so every one that sweareth, and nameth, shall not be wholly pure from sin.
There is a word that is clothed about with death: God grant that it be not found in the heritage of Jacob; for all such things shall be far from the godly, and they shall not wallow in their sins.12 A man that sweareth much, shall be filled with iniquity, and a scourge shall not depart from his house.
Use not thy mouth to intemperate swearing, for therein is the word of sin.13 And if he make it void, his sin shall be upon him: and if he dissemble it, he offendeth double:
Remember thy father and thy mother, when thou sittest among great men. Be not forgetful before them, and so thou by thy custom become a fool, and wish that thou hadst not been born, and curse they day of thy nativity.14 And if he swear in vain, he shall not be justified: for his house shall be filled with his punishment.
The man that is accustomed to opprobrious words will never be reformed all the days of his life.15 There is also another speech opposite to death, let it not be found in the inheritance of Jacob.
Two sorts of men multiply sin, and the third will bring wrath: a hot mind is as a burning fire, it will never be quenched till it be consumed: a fornicator in the body of his flesh will never cease till he hath kindled a fire.16 For from the merciful all these things shall be taken away, and they shall not wallow in sins.
All bread is sweet to a whoremonger, he will not leave off till he die.17 Let not thy mouth be accustomed to indiscreet speech: for therein is the word of sin.
A man that breaketh wedlock, saying thus in his heart, Who seeth me? I am compassed about with darkness, the walls cover me, and no body seeth me; what need I to fear? the most High will not remember my sins:18 Remember thy father and thy mother, for thou sittest is the midst of great men:
Such a man only feareth the eyes of men, and knoweth not that the eyes of the Lord are ten thousand times brighter than the sun, beholding all the ways of men, and considering the most secret parts.19 Lest God forget thee in their sight, and thou, by thy daily custom, be infatuated and suffer reproach: and wish that thou hadst not been born, and curse the day of thy nativity.
He knew all things ere ever they were created; so also after they were perfected he looked upon them all.20 The man that is accustomed to opprobrious words, will never be corrected all the days of his life.
This man shall be punished in the streets of the city, and where he suspecteth not he shall be taken.21 Two sorts of men multiply sins, and the third bringeth wrath and destruction.
Thus shall it go also with the wife that leaveth her husband, and bringeth in an heir by another.22 A hot soul is a burning fire, it will never be quenched, till it devour some thing.
For first, she hath disobeyed the law of the most High; and secondly, she hath trespassed against her own husband; and thirdly, she hath played the whore in adultery, and brought children by another man.23 And a man that is wicked in the mouth of his flesh, will not leave off till he hath kindled a fire.
She shall be brought out into the congregation, and inquisition shall be made of her children.24 To a man that is a fornicator all bread is sweet, he will not be weary of sinning unto the end.
Her children shall not take root, and her branches shall bring forth no fruit.25 Every man that passeth beyond his own bed, despising his own soul, and saying: Who seeth me?
She shall leave her memory to be cursed, and her reproach shall not be blotted out.26 Darkness compasseth me about, and the walls cover me, and no man seeth me: whom do I fear? the most High will not remember my sins.
And they that remain shall know that there is nothing better than the fear of the Lord, and that there is nothing sweeter than to take heed unto the commandments of the Lord.27 And he understandeth not that his eye seeth all things, for such a man's fear driveth from him the fear of God, and the eyes of men fearing him:
It is great glory to follow the Lord, and to be received of him is long life.28 And he knoweth not that the eyes of the Lord are far brighter than the sun, beholding round about all the ways of men, and the bottom of the deep, and looking into the hearts of men, into the most hidden parts.
For all things were known to the Lord God, before they were created: so also after they were perfected he beholdeth all things.
This man shall be punished in the streets of the city, and he shall be chased as a colt: and where he suspected not, he shall be taken.
And he shall be in disgrace with all men, because he understood not the fear of the Lord.
So every woman also that leaveth her husband, and bringeth in an heir by another :
For first she hath been unfaithful to the law of the most High: and secondly, she hath offended against her husband: thirdly, she hath fornicated in adultery, end hath gotten her children of another man.
This woman shall be brought into the assembly, and inquisition shall be made of her children.
Her children shall not take root, and her branches shall bring forth no fruit.
She shall leave her memory to be cursed, and her infamy shall not be blotted out.
And they that remain shall know. that there is nothing better than the fear of God: and that there is nothing sweeter than to have regard to the commandments of the Lord.
It is great glory to follow the Lord for length of days shall be received from him.
