1 Surely vain are all men by nature, who are ignorant of God, and could not out of the good things that are seen know him that is: neither by considering the works did they acknowledge the workmaster;	1 São insensatos por natureza todos os homens que ignoraram Deus, e que pelos bens visíveis não chegaram a conhecer Aquele que é, nem, considerando as obras, reconheceram o Artista.
2 But deemed either fire, or wind, or the swift air, or the circle of the stars, or the violent water, or the lights of heaven, to be the gods which govern the world.	2 Pelo contrário, tomaram o fogo, ou o vento, ou o ar veloz, ou o círculo dos astros, ou a água impetuosa, ou os luzeiros dos céus, por deuses governadores do mundo.
3 With whose beauty if they being delighted took them to be gods; let them know how much better the Lord of them is: for the first author of beauty hath created them.	3 Se eles, encantados com a beleza de tais coisas, as julgaram deuses, reconheçam quanto é melhor do que elas o seu Senhor, porque foi o Autor da beleza que criou todas estas coisas.
4 But if they were astonished at their power and virtue, let them understand by them, how much mightier he is that made them.	4 Ou, se eles se maravilharam do seu poder e força, entendam por elas que o que as fez é mais forte do que elas.
5 For by the greatness and beauty of the creatures proportionably the maker of them is seen.	5 Com efeito, pela grandeza e beleza das criaturas se pode, por analogia, chegar ao conhecimento do seu Criador.
6 But yet for this they are the less to be blamed: for they peradventure err, seeking God, and desirous to find him.	6 Todavia estes homens são menos repreensíveis, porque, porventura, caem no erro buscando a Deus e desejando encontrá-lo.
7 For being conversant in his works they search him diligently, and believe their sight: because the things are beautiful that are seen.	7 Ocupados no exame das suas obras, são seduzidos pelo seu aspecto, pois são belas as coisas visíveis.
8 Howbeit neither are they to be pardoned.	8 Mas, por outra parte, nem estes merecem desculpa,
9 For if they were able to know so much, that they could aim at the world; how did they not sooner find out the Lord thereof?	9 porque, se chegaram a ter luz bastante para poderem conhecer o universo, como não descobriram mais facilmente o Senhor dele?
10 But miserable are they, and in dead things is their hope, who call them gods, which are the works of men's hands, gold and silver, to shew art in, and resemblances of beasts, or a stone good for nothing, the work of an ancient hand.	10 São desgraçados e fundam em coisa morta as suas esperanças, aqueles que chamaram deuses às obras das mãos dos homens, ao ouro e à prata, trabalhados com arte, às figuras de animais, ou a uma pedra inútil, obra de mão antiga.
11 Now a carpenter that felleth timber, after he hath sawn down a tree meet for the purpose, and taken off all the bark skilfully round about, and hath wrought it handsomely, and made a vessel thereof fit for the service of man's life;	11 Um artista hábil corta do bosque um tronco fácil de trabalhar, dextramente lhe tira toda a casca, e, valendo-se da sua arte, faz uma peça útil para uso da vida.
12 And after spending the refuse of his work to dress his meat, hath filled himself;	12 O que sobrou da obra, emprega-o para cozinhar a comida, com que fica saciado.
13 And taking the very refuse among those which served to no use, being a crooked piece of wood, and full of knots, hath carved it diligently, when he had nothing else to do, and formed it by the skill of his understanding, and fashioned it to the image of a man;	13 Quanto ao resto de tudo isto, que para nenhum uso é útil. por ser um madeiro torto e cheio de nós, vai-o esculpindo nas horas livres, trabalhando-o com a arte que lhe é possível.
14 Or made it like some vile beast, laying it over with vermilion, and with paint colouring it red, and covering every spot therein;	14 e dá-lhe feições dum homem, ou aspecto de algum vil animal. Põe-lhe vermelhão, pinta-o de uma cor encarnada, encobrindo todas as manchas que nele há.
15 And when he had made a convenient room for it, set it in a wall, and made it fast with iron:	15 Depois prepara-lhe um nicho conveniente, coloca-o numa parede, segurando-o com um prego.
16 For he provided for it that it might not fall, knowing that it was unable to help itself; for it is an image, and hath need of help:	16 Usa com ele desta precaução, para que não caia, pois reconhece que (o deus) se não pode ajudar a si mesmo: Com efeito, é uma estátua, que precisa de apoio.
17 Then maketh he prayer for his goods, for his wife and children, and is not ashamed to speak to that which hath no life.	17 Entretanto, quando o implora por causa dos seus bens, dos seus casamentos, ou dos seus filhos, não se envergonha de falar com o (pedaço de madeira) que não tem vida
18 For health he calleth upon that which is weak: for life prayeth to that which is dead; for aid humbly beseecheth that which hath least means to help: and for a good journey he asketh of that which cannot set a foot forward:	18 e implora saúde a um inválido, pede vida a um morto invoca em seu socorro um débil.
19 And for gaining and getting, and for good success of his hands, asketh ability to do of him, that is most unable to do any thing.	19 para o bom sucesso duma jornada, recorre aquele que não pode andar; (enfim) para seus negócios, suas empresas, e para o bom êxito de todas as suas obras, implora a quem nada pode fazer com as mãos.
