Wisdom 13

KING JAMES BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Surely vain are all men by nature, who are ignorant of God, and could not out of the good things that are seen know him that is: neither by considering the works did they acknowledge the workmaster;	1 Oui, vains par nature tous les hommes en qui se trouvait l'ignorance de Dieu, qui, en partant desbiens visibles, n'ont pas été capables de connaître Celui-qui-est, et qui, en considérant les oeuvres, n'ont pasreconnu l'Artisan.
2 But deemed either fire, or wind, or the swift air, or the circle of the stars, or the violent water, or the lights of heaven, to be the gods which govern the world.	2 Mais c'est le feu, ou le vent, ou l'air rapide, ou la voûte étoilée, ou l'eau impétueuse, ou lesluminaires du ciel, qu'ils ont considérés comme des dieux, gouverneurs du monde!
3 With whose beauty if they being delighted took them to be gods; let them know how much better the Lord of them is: for the first author of beauty hath created them.	3 Que si, charmés de leur beauté, ils les ont pris pour des dieux, qu'ils sachent combien leur Maîtreest supérieur, car c'est la source même de la beauté qui les a créés.
4 But if they were astonished at their power and virtue, let them understand by them, how much mightier he is that made them.	4 Et si c'est leur puissance et leur activité qui les ont frappés, qu'ils en déduisent combien pluspuissant est Celui qui les a formés,
5 For by the greatness and beauty of the creatures proportionably the maker of them is seen.	5 car la grandeur et la beauté des créatures font, par analogie, contempler leur Auteur.
6 But yet for this they are the less to be blamed: for they peradventure err, seeking God, and desirous to find him.	6 Ceux-ci toutefois ne méritent qu'un blâme léger; peut-être en effet ne s'égarent-ils qu'en cherchantDieu et en voulant le trouver:
7 For being conversant in his works they search him diligently, and believe their sight: because the things are beautiful that are seen.	7 versés dans ses oeuvres, ils les explorent et se laissent prendre aux apparences, tant ce qu'on voitest beauté!
8 Howbeit neither are they to be pardoned.	8 Et pourtant eux non plus ne sont point pardonnables:
9 For if they were able to know so much, that they could aim at the world; how did they not sooner find out the Lord thereof?	9 s'ils ont été capables d'acquérir assez de science pour pouvoir scruter le monde, comment n'en ont-ils pas plus tôt découvert le Maître!
10 But miserable are they, and in dead things is their hope, who call them gods, which are the works of men's hands, gold and silver, to shew art in, and resemblances of beasts, or a stone good for nothing, the work of an ancient hand.	10 Mais malheureux sont-ils, avec leurs espoirs mis en des choses mortes, ceux qui ont appelé dieuxdes ouvrages de mains d'hommes, or, argent, traités avec art, figures d'animaux, ou pierre inutile, ouvrage d'unemain antique.
11 Now a carpenter that felleth timber, after he hath sawn down a tree meet for the purpose, and taken off all the bark skilfully round about, and hath wrought it handsomely, and made a vessel thereof fit for the service of man's life;	11 Et voici encore un bûcheron: il scie un arbre facile à manier, il en racle soigneusement toutel'écorce, il le travaille avec adresse, il en forme un objet propre aux usages de la vie.
12 And after spending the refuse of his work to dress his meat, hath filled himself;	12 Quant aux déchets de son travail, il les emploie à préparer sa nourriture et il se rassasie.
13 And taking the very refuse among those which served to no use, being a crooked piece of wood, and full of knots, hath carved it diligently, when he had nothing else to do, and formed it by the skill of his understanding, and fashioned it to the image of a man;	13 Et le déchet qui en reste et qui n'est bon à rien, un bois tordu et poussé tout en noeuds: il le prendet le sculpte avec l'application des heures de loisir, il le façonne, avec le savoir-faire des instants de détente; il luidonne une figure humaine,
14 Or made it like some vile beast, laying it over with vermilion, and with paint colouring it red, and covering every spot therein;	14 ou bien il le fait semblable à quelque vil animal, le recouvre de vermillon, en rougit la surface àla sanguine, recouvre d'un enduit toutes ses taches.
15 And when he had made a convenient room for it, set it in a wall, and made it fast with iron:	15 Puis il lui fait une habitation convenable, le place dans un mur et l'assure avec du fer.
16 For he provided for it that it might not fall, knowing that it was unable to help itself; for it is an image, and hath need of help:	16 Ainsi veille-t-il à ce qu'il ne tombe pas, sachant bien qu'il est incapable de s'aider lui-même, carce n'est qu'une image, et il a besoin d'aide!
17 Then maketh he prayer for his goods, for his wife and children, and is not ashamed to speak to that which hath no life.	17 Pourtant, s'il veut prier pour ses biens, son mariage, ses enfants, il ne rougit pas d'adresser laparole à cet objet sans vie; pour la santé, il invoque ce qui est faible,
18 For health he calleth upon that which is weak: for life prayeth to that which is dead; for aid humbly beseecheth that which hath least means to help: and for a good journey he asketh of that which cannot set a foot forward:	18 pour la vie, il implore ce qui est mort, pour un secours, il supplie ce qui a le moins d'expérience,pour un voyage, ce qui ne peut même pas se servir de ses pieds,
19 And for gaining and getting, and for good success of his hands, asketh ability to do of him, that is most unable to do any thing.	19 pour un gain, une entreprise, le succès du travail de ses mains, il demande de la vigueur à ce quin'a pas la moindre vigueur dans les mains!
